If I close the lid on my MBPR the screen does not touch the trackpad or keyboard, therefore your's should not either. This may also point to an issue with the display hinge where its sitting too low. The case should never touch the screen as thats why you have a rubber gasket around the display border.
It's happened to me thou, not with the antiglare but it has left marks for me to clean off before.
 
I bought my rMBP 3 1/2 years ago, and had the screen changed a year after that because of dead pixels. I hope this program will be applied to the new screen and not to the original date I bought the computer.
 
I had this problem with my mid-2012 rMBP, I just noticed a mark on the screen one day, the next thing I knew, it started to grow. I have camera lenses that cost more than the laptop, so had been very careful with how I cleaned it. When I took it to the Genius Bar I just got told it was my fault "you've probably used an alcohol based screen cleaner", when I said about the potential for a class action suit the Genius said "well once that goes through, you'll be covered". I wasn't overly happy with the response, it had occurred along the bottom of my display so seemed like heat was a potential culprit. I ended up speaking to Exec Relations who 'followed it up' (it was very quick, so I'm guessing the issue was known) and had the store replace the screen (unfortunately they broken it whilst putting it in, so I had to wait for them to order another, the whole process took a month...). I was however outside of my warranty at this point, I had a three year academic warranty, and was about three months out of it. The annoying thing was that when the store called me to say they were going to replace the screen, the chap said "we didn't know anything about it otherwise we'd have replaced it, it's covered under consumer protection".

In short, they replaced the screen, outside of warranty and before the quality program, but it took getting in touch with Executive Relations. I am in the UK and we have fairly strong consumer rights legislation that extends well beyond warranty terms which is well worth remembering when you spend £1700 on a laptop that starts to degrade well before its time.

Antipioneer - this is exactly why we are not praising apple for being customer friendly, but apple apologists stil dont get it... and now, anyone imagine that u live in country where there is no apple store, no apple exec you can speak with, just apple resellers and apple authorised services - lousy services, but paying same (or higher) price.. sometimes, its hard to be apple fan

Find something else to do and stop throwing an attitude at people around here just because they don't feel the need to throw Apple off the bus as some others around here feel the need to do.

When I spoke about whiners, I wasn't referring to real people complaining for demonstrable defects like this, but people crying an screaming at every news about Apple ...
We are speaking about two different things ....

The average user don't think about a recall if his device fails. He just wants to know how much it costs to repair it, if outside warranty period. And in case of Apple's products, the place to go is Apple Store or authorized reseller. Both will give him the right answer in this case.

You are putting this like apple is keeping this quality program hidden.
We are not "special". We are not insider.
We are discussing about it because hundreds of websites are speaking about this program.
It takes a google search .... even my wife is able to do that.
Or more simply to go to an Apple Store with the defective MacBook.

Just filling in the gaps, this goes back to the debate we had about iPhone 4 antennagate. Where we discussed the user base and the people who visited forums.

My concern is that right now cause the news has hit, you can google it and get a news hit, a year or down the track it will fall off the SEO on sites and google results.

It just needs to be added to the support page, where a user expects these to be, and not play a game of hide and seek on news sites. Yes easy to find when the news breaks.

Does anyone know how long it will take to get this fixed if I go to a Genius Bar, i.e. for how long will I be without the computer?

Post 176 : guy said you need to get it inspected first, to confirm it qualifies , and it's 5 day repair.

So you're saying if you were disabled or an elderly person that cannot drive, and has no one to drive you 250 miles round trip that Apple refuses mailing in the product for repair for people in those situations? Yeah. Sure. That IS a common occurrence for many people you know?

I have had my own issues with Apple, FYI, but your earlier post shows that they blocked you from any possible way of convenience. I have personally (along with many others I know) never known Apple to decline a customer from sending their product in for repair. It makes zero sense. Also if you want people to take your post seriously, lose the use of profanity. Just sayin'.

Precisely. You have no proof Apple are offering mail in for this, so you are just ********ting without fact, the same as I am I guess since I can't record my phone calls.

I told them exactly that: I'm not able to leave the house or therefor travel to any location, but they kept telling me in needs inspection and they are not allowing mail in options for this. I called again and I was told the same thing.

PS. I couldn't care less what people think about me on here. I'm not trying to play God, just sharing my experience because it's frustrating to think I'm alone in this case.

If apple listened we would have bigger batteries, All iphones would be in 1080, and no more 16gb phones.

Some people don't really know what the iPhone is about, it seems.
 
So... Here in Denmark, we don't have any Apple Stores and, obviously, no genius bars.
We have a chain of stores called Humac, which is the only Apple Premium Reseller (APR) here.

My 2012 rMBP is showing early symptoms of this (around the very edges of the screen) and I can only imagine this getting worse.

Since my normal warranty is long expired (having bought the rMBP in july 2012), the natural step is to take it to Humac, which, as a Apple Premium Reseller, should also haven gotten this note, right?
 
I've contacted two AASP within 2 hours of my location and they both said it will take 2 WEEKS to repair!

They will not pre-order a new display until it has been inspected (I sent photos, but not good enough apparently) so it would be send off to a service location, inspected, new part ordered, installed and then I can go and drive another 2 hour to collect it.

Not too long ago I could mail it in, but having spoke with Apple they are no longer doing that unless one has a contract as a business.

Apple really have gone down hill with their service. (yes it's good they are acknowledging their faulty parts but that's only half the story)

I had my screen replaced free this last Monday gone. Took it to the AASP on Monday, and Wednesday new screen installed and picked up that afternoon.

I had my screen replaced outside warranty after they inspected my rMBP. They said specs of dust on the keys burnt into the screen due the gap when closed.
I now use a shaggy max cloth over the keys when closed

What a load of BS. It appears its a design flaw where the keys may touch the screen when the lid is closed, and I have a Moshi TPU keyboard protector on my keyboard as the MBPR key letters are poor quality and eventually become "shiny" as Im a touch typer. I also had a silicon keyboard protector on for the last 6 months and still the coating issue started. So this alone means the coating is defective.

If Apple really cared it would be a public notice. They are purposely trying to make sure this defect is not widely known as a possibility. But I'm glad you thing the great Apple is the only company who replaces defective devices
It is not a secret, otherwise we wouldn't be here discussing about it...

People on this forum need to deal with the fact they aren't any smarter than "average users" out there.
You aren't an "insider" (nor I am).
You are just a customer.
If you know about this quality program , this means it have public notice.

What are you smoking? They are the most likely company to deny the issue exists and tell customers they are crazy. Even in this situation, if news wasn't reporting it, you would never know because they are not advertising the issue.
Let's see when they have done the opposite you have implied:
  • iPod Nano battery gate (explosions and fires) (mine melted.... got a replacement 4 years later after they did something before succoming to legal action)
  • iPhone 3GS battery gate
  • iMac over heating issues (multiple years)
  • Macbook over heating issues (multiple years.... you know, because people use them wrong and that's why logic boards fried and displays came lose and bottoms of machines caused burns)
  • iPhone 4..... sorry man, you were just holding it wrong..... you know, until you weren't.
  • iPhone 6+ bend gate (yeah, you were putting it in your pocket wrong)
There are tons more. I didn't even listen software issue denials, etc.

Once it's hit media, become so large an issue they can't fan the flames of attention, then they turn on support. Prior, they train Genius and support line staff to deny the issues.

6,000 known incidents does not warrant a secret program.... (because making it a secret program to fix fault displays is so big of them.... that truly is apple being most likely to help....NOT) it warrants a recall, and most other companies are FAR more likely to have done so.

there is no "secret programs", because you aren't 007 and you know about it.
But you lost any credibility in your post just putting the word "#gate" in it....
 
Why would there be a 3year limit on it? It seems that if the problem exists on certain units produced in a certain time period then then the replacement program should exist indefinitely. Almost like hurry up and go wipe the crap out of your display and make the problem occur so you can get the better display.

yes, it would be better if they add this to the support page.
But what really count for me is they honor the warranty if my new MacBook Pro would fail (know on wood).

I own the 2012 rmbp, so this is good news for me, though the screen in perfect still. I do admit that it's not been used much, the battery cycles are less than 40 I believe. Though glad if anything develops in the next year I'm covered. Still an excellent machine, I have no intention changing.

Are you saying that the keys become shiny because you're a "touch typer"? That, if you were to look down at the keyboard more often, the keys wouldn't become shiny?

Yes they should apply the same procedure of an Apple Store...

Why would there be a 3year limit on it? It seems that if the problem exists on certain units produced in a certain time period then then the replacement program should exist indefinitely. Almost like hurry up and go wipe the crap out of your display and make the problem occur so you can get the better display.
Do you want a lifetime coverage of the coating ?

That's a question for people in the legal professions. Lots of countries have consumer protection which states a device sold needs to be defect free for 2-3 years. It cannot be infinite , cause a device is not expected to last beyond a certain period outlined by your consumer protection laws.

Maybe it affected just some production batches, maybe it is triggered by a combination of factors.

When there is a definite issue, Apple is the most likely to take action to help consumers. People can scoff at Apple's behaviour while they are undergoing the problem, but the fact is that Apple is still the most likely to offer help. No other company does this.

Just out of interest, can you provide a source for your statements? I'd love to see a comparison of Apple with other companies in terms of their likeliness in offering help. You wouldn't have just made these sentences up, right?

And as some other users have said, Apple are just trying to avoid a class action lawsuit.
 
A few weeks ago, my iPad Air 2 lost some of the protective coating. Wasn't sure what happened. Took it to the Apple Store and they said some kind of liquid was dropped on the screen. I'm really good with protecting my electronics but after seeing the picture of the MacBook, I have similar problems with the iPad screen.

Does anyone else? After talking with the people at Apple, it sounds like it is what it is. Nothing they can do? Still under warranty.

Its true, Apple does change parts during the manufacturing lifecyle, I would have expected to change parts once these issues started to be raised.

That is what happens when you buy one, and work gives you a new MacBook the same month.

Its a great machine, and it stores anything that is important to me. I've started using it more often again. I really have no reason to update it. :)
