I see Apple have bumped up the price of the White MacBook in the UK, from £719 to £749. The base price in the US remained the same. Funny that.

And there's the VAT issue for the 'free' iPod touch, which is going to cost you £24.

So, in essence:
Yesterday in the US you could have a slower computer and no free iPod, and today you can have the faster computer and an iPod for the same price (plus sales tax for the iPod? I dunno).

Yesterday in the UK you could have a slower computer and no free iPod, and today you can have the faster computer and an iPod for an extra £54.

Hmmm...

well the education pricing increase is about £26 + £20 for the "free" iPod touch 8gb = £46 total increase, for which you get the increase in processor and ram speed and iPod touch.

a tempting deal while the BTS promotion lasts... it all depends on when snow leopard is released. i would hate to have to pay extra for that when that comes out, especially if its coming out just after the BTS promotion ends!

So, I have been waiting all spring for this Back to School Promotion to buy my first MacBook. Now that it is so close to the WWDC, should I wait a few more weeks to see if the MacBooks get a bump in their specs? Should I finally reward myself now with a new computer? What do you all think?

if you do not need the computer right now and you will still qualify (ie you aren't about to graduate) I would advise waiting to see what is announced at WWDC. they might update more specs or lower prices. they might say that snow leopard is coming out Sept 1 and if you can wait that long, why not get a machine with the newest OS and avoid having to buy it.

IF you are a college student and you purcahsed a Mac within the last 30 days, you can go back to the store and still get the free ipod.

which is not what is said in the terms and conditions so please provide everyone with your full name and department within Apple so when they are told no, they have the information to tell the refusing employee who had the authority to tell them otherwise.

apple will include the "new" iphones in the deal when they are released.

no they won't. the phone prices are tied to the ATT contract and thus are always exempt from any discounts and rebates (cause you potentially get one through ATT).

now if a day comes when there is no locked carrier and they are just selling the phones outright, perhaps they will include it. but that day won't be seen this year

I waited, and waited...

And yesterday I finally bought my FIRST macbook. I was just waiting for the back to school sale to start, and as soon as it did, i ran to the nearest apple store, and made the buy.

Got the free iPod Touch, and the free Printer!

Not really free...still have to pay tax on it. I'm in a HIGH tax state, so comes out to about $22 in taxes.

Plus I love all the people saying to CL, or ebay it. I'm sure there will be a gluttony of Touch's from everyone else selling their Touch as well.

Sometimes you can do better with deals on just previous gen mac's at Amazon or other apple authorized dealers online and not pay TAX or have to deal w/ selling the Touch.

Also if you buy refurb(where you can save $100+ from buying new) then the Touch is really costing you something if you go w/new :D

Do you have to be in college?

I'm in middle school and was wondering if you had to be going into college to get the free iPod Touch when getting a new mac. I'm signed up for the educational discounts for my school district, but will Apple deny me?

That comes from EXPERIENCE :(

If you are a student, and not faculty or staff, you must be attending or accepted into a Higher Education institution. Sorry.

How does Apple check? I pretended to be ordering a MacBook on the online store and it asked me if I wanted a free iPod Touch. I said yes, and was up to the point where I had to enter a credit card before I cancelled the order.

You can still buy a mac. Just say your a faculty member working in a K-12 school system. I'm a junior in high school and I just selected that section. I talked to an apple rep on the phone. She said they work this education discount on a honorary system. That means that they just take your word for it. :apple:

Thanks. My friend is getting a MacBook and was getting an iPod Touch also. He'll be estatic he can get the iPod for free.

So I guess your word is worth $50-$100?:D

why not just ask a teacher to buy it for you and pay them. That way at least you got it honestly. :D

Plus:
Apple routinely audits the purchases of customers at the Apple Store for Education to insure that only eligible purchases have ordered and that all purchase conditions have been observed. Should an audit disclose after delivery (or should Apple otherwise discover) that you were not an eligible purchaser at the time you placed your order or that you have not observed all of the conditions applicable to your purchase, you authorize Apple:

Is it not fraud if you are claiming you are someone you are not, and there for get a discount for something you are not? I don't know, I'm just wondering... And if this is the case, what are the ramifications?

I don't claim that its a fair policy for only higher education students and professors, and k-12 teachers, to get the computers cheaper and not the students. But thats life. Find someone that legally qualifies, and get them to buy it for you... Is that getting around it? Yeah, maybe, but I think thats less of an issue than claiming you are someone you are not. But I'm not a lawyer, and I'm certainly not your lawyer, even if I was a lawyer. So take the advice as just that... From someone that isn't a lawyer.

edit: not replying to the person I quoted, so much as various people who have said they are going to do this/suggested claiming to be someone they are not.

The thing is that a huge number of people have children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews/etc. in grades K-12. So in that case how would you tell if the purchase was for the student or one of the adults? If you're going to open it up to that many people you may as well make it a general promotion and not tied to "back to school" at all.

Sure, I agree there would be little way to assure it was really for the child and not an adult. Thats why they have it set as it is, of course. However for the legitimate users in that age group, I can see why it would be frustrating, especially at the higher end, where legitimate money would be saved. At the mac mini and macbook white level, its almost not worth it... Sure, $50 is $50, but its a bigger issue at the higher levels where there is $100 or more to be saved (haven't looked at education prices for anything but macbook and mac mini... Not rich enough to buy anything else :p).

As for making it a general promotion, that would accomplish what Apple is trying accomplish in clearing out old iPod stock. Its nice that its something 'special' for students and teachers how it is, but if it changed, it would still accomplish the same end for Apple.

This is gonna be maybe dumb question. Don't laugh :) I'm not American, I'm European but I'm in the States for 5 months. Wanna buy Macbook 2.4 with this BTS promo. Unfortunately I don't have U.S. college ID, just my European. Can friend of mine buy it for me and put my name? I want the rebate to be mailed to me, not to him.

Thanks

I shall wait it out...

I calculated the cost of getting a MacBook and an iPod Touch 32GB from Apple's website with the promotion versus getting it elsewhere without the promotion and I see that the cost will be roughly the same... I save maybe a few bucks using the promotion.

So this is my plan... I'm going to wait until Apple Refresh their MacBook AND iPod Touches, then I'll get it. I believe I'll get Snow Leopard, a refreshed MacBook, and an iPod Touch 64GB for roughly the same price as the currently running promotion for the highest Touch capacity.

You might ask, "How does buying it without the promotion cost you the same as with the promotion?" The answer is simple: I won't need to pay taxes if I don't buy from within the state where I live.

I'm not throwing my money away

Your government thanks you for helping it in these times of financial need.

My government rips my money off from income tax and property tax as is... I don't feel guilty not giving them any more of my money. Thank you very much! I have every intention to make a purchase without having to pay extra.

I can't say I'm surprised the iPhone isn't included in the promotion. I do think its time for me to upgrade to a new macbook though, and this promotion stacked with the $100 printer is just enough to get me to go.

the phone isn't included because of the money ATT pays.

so you plan to go to a state where there is a lower sales tax to make your purchase. or are you thinking you can order online and not pay sales tax (which isn't always true).
