A wise european once accused Apple of "pulling the wool over customers eyes". I think I now understand what he was on about.

iPod Nano Replacement:
"If your country is not listed, online service is not available for your location. Please return to the program page for alternative service options."

Returning to the Program page yields nothing. It's just a polite way of telling people to f-off.

Just call an Apple Authorised Service Provider in your country. You will have to give your iPod to them, they send it to Apple, once received Apple sends them the replacement and they give it to you. Very easy

For those of you who are worried about not having your first-gen iPod Nano, NO WORRIES!!!

Just went to the Hong Kong Apple Store today, I didn't think Apple can be so cheap...

All I get is the same first-gen iPod Nano back as a replacement, not the latest generation at all!

Did people really think they'd get shiny new free ipods?

Apple aren't doing this from the goodness of their hearts or for altruistic reasons. It's taken a 7 year court case to get this far and they're doing it because they have to.

I would think that if Apple is returning refurbished iPods that they have an obligation to specifically state so rather than than have the issue be unclear.

Duration?

Does anyone has any idea how long will Apple accept these ipods? It seems that i wont be able to send mine in until January. I doubt if the program will last till then

I expect the program will last quite a while. The whole exercise is only meaningful if it is able to mop up any and all defective batteries. I remember the Nokia BL-5C battery recall page was active for years.

just had a visit from the guy from UPS minutes ago, and he left right away with my ipod in it's box !

Now what

I filled in the form and got to the screen saying "Thank you." and that the request has been sent and that they will send me package materials and shipping information.

I'm guessing my iPod is eligble then? I have also seen people on here that received and email which I haven't, maybe it takes a while or?

Thanks :apple:

So the court case was submitted before the iPod Nano was initiall released in 2005? I know lawyers chase ambulances and generally suck but this is a whole new level of sliminess...preemptive filing of cases against Apple? Wow.

If Apple is refurbishing iPods and sending them back I'd be surprised (since they could send my engraved iPod back to me) but if they're replacing from old stock then it may be helpful to wait past the initial wave of respondents in hopes Apple runs out of 1st gen iPod Nanos and hands out 2nd gen Nanos or something else (Sony CD Walkmans prolly).

Well, my return box arrived today, Tuesday, even though I just filled out the website form on Saturday. It is typically well designed, as you would expect from Apple. Anyone want to make any guesstimates as to what the 1st gen iPods will be fetching on eBay if they are indeed replaced with refurbished models? I see that there a few used and refurbished 1st gens ranging from $49.99 - 64.99 listed as of today. I am guessing that quite a few will be resold.

Had my box show up today. One of the instructions states " Complete the enclosed UPS Shipping Waybill and attach on the bottom of your return package." There was no such enclosed waybill. My package did have the EZ label, is that good enough? Did anyone else's have an enclosed waybill?

Don't want to ship it off with improper labelling and I never receive an iPod back..

Post a picture of the box and the stuff they sent, can't wait for my box to arrive! haha

My box came through FedEx overnight. Got the e-mail Friday night, submitted my info that moment, and a box came Monday morning. I put my iPod in the baggy and put that in the "coffin" and shipped it off that afternoon. (Pretty much like how the Xbox repairs went when Microsoft still sent you a box and the styrofoam.) Just got an e-mail a couple of hours ago saying that Apple has it in their possession and that I can check the repair status on their website.

I sent it in with a letter telling them they won't find the battery inside my nano because it swelled up and was disposed of. I did half the work of the battery repair/replacement for them, so I think I deserve a proper refurb/repair. ;) Although I am genuinely worried they'll say I'm ineligible for a replacement one way or another just because I removed a rather dangerous battery. Hopefully it all works out.

I know it is only an iPod, but would you be prepared to go 6 weeks without a TV, phone, or your car if it was deemed a fault causing recall, based on a manufacturer issue?

Why the long wait, when you can buy a new Nano in the online Apple store for immediate delivery?

It's a 6 week wait because the 'inventory" of 1st gen nanos is in the hands of us who already own one. There is no warehouse of 2005/2006 1st gen nanos to send us, and they are NOT sending us new ones. They are fixing the ones we all send in - which will take several weeks.

Geez, the latter pages of this thread really lowered my expectations, I would not expect to receive a unit in worse cosmetic shape than mine, which is pretty scratched up. I have purchased refurbs from Sony and Vizio that looked brand new, and would at least expect to have a clean, no scratched back and display...

So you guys think that the ipod nanos we send back (after they qualify) will just have their battery replaced and sent back to us, with all the damage/scratches that they have? Or would we get new 1st generation ipods identical to ours, except just new/refurbished ones that don't have any cosmetic damage?

INTERESTING OBSERVATION: I also speak and read Russian, so I clicked the Russian tab to see the same exact policy information in Russian. The Russian word for "replacement" is not in the paragraph where the English part says "replacement". Instead, it says that a new unit will be sent out :)

They will not have just their batteries replaced, since Apple has said that your personal engraving will be lost. Most likely they've manufactured a batch of new front and back plates. So no cosmetic damage will be visible, I'd imagine.

I wish I had thought of that.

Agreed. As with any refurb iOS product you may buy from Apple, the casing (front and back) is replaced, the screen is replaced, the battery is replaced. It will be QA tested. And it will be almost as new. But no. It won't be a current generation iPod nano. Maybe Apple will send us an iPhone 4S instead.

since i wont get my same exact ipod back, which was a present, i scratched the crap out of it. have fun refurbishing that :apple:

that's childish if it's true but makes no difference to apple anyway because they were taking your casing and throwing it in the bin anyway.

Replacement Process

Your iPod nano serial number will be checked to verify that it is eligible for this program. You will receive a replacement unit approximately 6 weeks after we receive your current iPod nano (1st gen).

Right, so I send them my iPod and then have to wait 6 weeks after they receive it to be able to given a replacement...?

OMG, Seriously????

The only reason why I'm sending mine in is because I'm hoping it will never come back.

Went into Hong Kong iFC store with my Nano. It was checked and found replaceable. I will go back in a week to get my replacement. I left with my Nano -- so whatever I'm getting in (now less than) a week is surely not one of these original Nanos refurbished...

Sent mine back

Received the box and sent it out. Easy. I hope they replace it with a pony. I've always wanted a pony and I expect nothing more than for Apple to make my childhood dreams come true.

Come on people - get real!
