I'm not sure why anyone would even consider to defend Apple's decision of having 60hz display on a premium phone.
The majority of iPhone owners might be fine with a chipset that has half the performance as well, doesn't mean they should go for that option when it still stays at flagship price point. 120hz display will not cost Apple anything, there are $150 phones with 120hz display, the only reason they keep it that way is to sell Pro models, and majority of people are going for them because the base model at that price point literally feels like a scam compared to other options.
The concerning part about not getting new software features within a year is longevity, Samsung released their AI stuff to S21 series, Apple cannot do it even on their current series because they cheaped out on RAM and apparently they are not gonna upgrade RAM on 16PM this year either. it's crazy how fast tables turned because 2 years ago one of the main reasons to consider an iPhone would have been superior longevity to competition but it seems to be all gone now.
It's not hard to imagine that in WWDC 2025 they announce some new AI feature that will not work on 16PM because it got no upgrade to RAM, just like what happened to 14 Pro Max users.
120 Hz is a feature that I don't mind getting if it was included in the base model, but is a feature I won't pay extra for

Wondering if Apple will slim down the offered products to just iPhone 16 (and Pro), iPhone 15 and iPhone SE4 to remove all lightning phones from the lineup, or if they'll just not offer the 14 in Europe?
The USB-C requirement does not apply to existing models, only to new models.

I've been wondering if Apple could get away with shipping the base iPhone with a 60Hz display in 2024. The 15 Pro is my very first 120Hz iPhone and I love it, but not sure if it's a too flgashippy feature or are we over this now?
It's not happening. ProMotion 120hz display is only available on devices with "Pro" in the name and rumors have already indicated that that isn't changing this year.

Most customers don’t care about the refresh rate of their phones. They often don’t notice and they care more about the price than the specs. It’s mostly us nerds on sites like this that base our purchases on technical minutia.

Headline:

Apple Leak Confirms Four iPhone 16 Models With Same A18 Chip

Body:
While we do expect all four iPhone 16 models to use a new A18 chip, Apple could still differentiate between the standard models and the Pro models, even giving the chips separate A18 and A18 Pro names. Apple could use A18 chips with a smaller number of GPU cores (either binned or disabled) for the iPhone 16 models, while saving chips with a better GPU for the iPhone 16 Pro lineup.

So not literally the “same” A18 chip, just “an” A18 chip. I think it’s pretty clear that there will be pro and non-pro versions of the A18.

If that’s not in the plans, there was no reason to make an A17 Pro. Apple never released a non-pro version, and based on this leak, they aren’t planning to, so that name only makes sense if the A18 finishes the job and comes in at least two variants.

The headline is literally wrong (and last paragraph of the story which repeats “the same” again). There is no confirmation of “the same” A18, just evidence that they will all have a version of the A18, these chips may be “the same” or “different” variants. While I understand headlines are designed to be eye catching and have a limited word count, they should still align with the body of the story, especially since not everyone will diligently read the whole story (frankly myself included).

Thank you for reading my PSA and plea for better headlines.

Not this year, but according to MR articles, the regular iPhone 17 will finally get Promotion displays in 2025, which should also follow suit to the iPad Air, Mini and MacBook Air in late 2025.

Seems unlikely Apple will stop the differentiation in CPU because Pro is simply too profitable. Same "A18" but it doesn't mean the base iPhone 16 will have identical GHz, core- and GPU-counts, or VRM/thermal limits as the iPhone 16 Pro.

Yes I could see them bin the A18 GPU cores between the Pro and non-Pro models as they did with the A15 in the iPhone 13 family.

It seems the rumors about the 8gb of RAM being the minimum are accurate based on all the evidence of which devices are capable and which aren’t. It’s a shame Apple handicapped their devices for so long with minimal base RAM.

As for the A18 itself, it will be an amazing chip based on everything we are seeing with the M4.

they really have to get better names for these things. also i'm still on the fence about upgrading. my iPhone 12 Pro was replaced under apple care so as of right now, I see no new "features" worth upgrading until they remove the pill and go full screen.

I am actually worried now because Tim Cook would do such great sacrifice to put this rare innovative feature that exists in every $150 phone upward on their $800 device, obviously we should not expect such futuristic technology without price increase.

The walled garden means Apple doesn’t really feel much competitive pressure. Yes, there are even budget Android devices offering extremely compelling experiences, but who’s going to switch at this point? Most iPhone owners are too deep in the Apple ecosystem for it to be a realistic choice.

In the old days they had to try make the best products they possibly could. Nowadays, it feels like the focus is on finding ways to segment their products and upsell, in order to further monetise their existing customer base.

That said, when it comes to AI, I expect all devices will be capable because Apple know that riding the AI bandwagon will increase the share price so much that it’ll more than make up for any drop in margins this year.

Wonder if the iPhone SE still holds an lcd-display and same form factor and touch sensor. Competition have cheaper phones with full front amoled and punch hole front facing cameras for years.

Would be nice if the new iPhone SE4 would look similar to a mini sized iPhone 15/16.

My wishful thinking… probably the iPhone SE6 will have these features in 2030 🤣😂🤣
I certainly hope it does - along with a LCD plus version.

Touch ID and bezels are infinitely superior to Face ID and idiotic hole punches/notches.
