XS is an atrocious name imo, I thought the whole point of naming last years phone the X was to catch up on the numbering with the amount of years? Nobody outside of Apple is going to call it 10S, it will be known as excess which has a bad connotation.
Totally agree.

I’m gong to cringe every time I hear people call it the iPhone excess. Apple virgins aren’t to know that the X should be pronounced 10 when there’s another letter following it....

How different was the 3G to the 3GS? Or the 4 to the 4S? There’s only so many ways a rounded red can look. I suppose Apple could curve the sides of the screen like Samsung just so someone would think it looks different. Apple tried something different with the iPhone 5C and it was roundly mocked. I wouldn’t mind seeing Apple introduce more colors but as far as the basic shape for iPhone, iPad and Macs I think those are largely solved problems. Only thing that might change is smaller bezels on the Macs.

The 3G to 3GS didn’t look very different, sure. 3GS to 4 looked completely different. 4S to 5 looked pretty different. 5s to 6 looked completely different. Since the 6, the phones have largely looked the same. The front of the 10 is the exception but even then, not huge.

MacBook pros - they’ve gotten thinner, trackpad is bigger, keyboard changed. But since ‘08 they’ve followed the same basic look.

I understand that design is a process of refinement. You find the shape, materials, textures etc that work best over time. Newness for the sake of newness is not good. But there’s not much surprising coming out of Apple from a hardware perspective like there used to be. I’ve lost interest in these new product reveals over time for that reason, as have many. The fanfare around these events have been a big part of what drives sales on launch day and early adoption in general. They’re losing that fanfare, and that’s just a bummer to me.

I used to be able to get damn near what I paid for a phone because through subsidy or a deal through the carrier I was never paying full price for the phone to begin with.

In subsidy days people argue you still paid for the phone. You did, for sure, but you were paying for it whether you decided to upgrade or not; it didn't make sense not to. More recently they were either doing buy one get one deal, or they were just straight up offering free upgrades if you traded your previous phone in. They've done away with that.

I have a 64gb X. Right now I stand to lose around $400 on it after a year of owenership if I go the eBay or swap route. That's not very attractive to me. I sold my 6s plus after two years of owenership for $380. It was the 64gb version, so $850 msrp (though I didn't lay that due to some T-Mobile perks, but let's pretend). So I lost $470 after those two years, and could have (should have) gone another year.
Well you should have sold earlier, I sold my 256 X with no apple care + 2 weeks ago for 870 so there is still good resale values. You just need to sell earlier.

I remember relentless people stating that apple would not use the X name again because the X was used to denote the 10th anniversary

This naming scheme is just terrible. Why use XS+ when there was never an X+??

Dropp all this number BS and go with iPhone and iPhone +. People are smart enough to knoe which versions are the latest.

You must me simpleminded to think all these “leaks” are accidental at this exact point in time.
also gold is tacky,no matter what.
but some folks like tacky so..

So Apple does not need to change IPhone name for at least 20 years from now.
2019 IPhone X-2
2020 X-2S
2021 X-3
2022 X-3S etc......

Interesting. Similarily Mac OS used to be called Mac OS X...

woah.... Interesting.

Regardless, I'd like to see more and more experimentation like this on the watch face.

I like it. I find that I have to switch between two watch faces to get all the complications I need.

Everyone will complain how expensive it is then go out and buy it so it really doesn't matter. If you can afford a $900 phone you can afford a $1200 phone. Plus that only means a few extra bucks per month on contract which people are ok with. Unless the thing is around $100 added to your monthly bill ($2000 off contract), no one will care. Hence Apple getting away with it.

Which is why Apple stock is doing so well. No matter how they screw up (MBP 2016/2017 keyboard, no refreshes for years, etc) people will still hand over their credit cards. Case in point, look at all the people saying "take my money Apple" even though they really know nothing about these products yet.

They should play inXS - Need You Tonight at the keynote haha

I think the price will be in XS.

It’s not Ex-CESS, it’s Ten-S.

Nothing wrong with the naming scheme and it doesn’t seem unusual either. People still calling it iPhone EX have missed the point.

X(S) I like that.
The color is definitely catchy

Yep, XS, a monument to Timmy's excessive margins and excessively limited features.

More seriously, as far as the colour. I am so beyond sick of silver, grey, gold and pink. At this point the main new feature I want is a new colour. The blue samsung notes are a gorgeous colour, almost worth switching just for that.

Looks like no notch?

I think by this point we can be sure that all 3 will have the notch. I take the image with the edges black as an indication Apple is embarrassed by the notch though. I would love to be wrong here and see a phone with no notch though.

Isn’t space gray a different colour every time? I remember slate gray... I liked that

iPhone XS but you have to call it "tennis". Does Apple really want to be the butt of every second rate comedian's jokes for the next year that badly?

It is, that's why I just said grey instead of specifying. I think any gray is just ugly for a phone (and a laptop, and a tablet).

I remember a lot of people here saying the 5 was just a stretched 4S. What do you want to see with the iPhone that would excite you?

What I don't get it the wallpaper. Sure it looks fine at that orientation but we hold our phones in portrait orientation for normal use. Those wallpapers will look awkward in portrait orientation.

This post is incredibly active so I don’t know if anyone has mentioned or noticed this already, but the image used on the display appears to be in landscape. Most reports suggest the larger device will support landscape mode, like the current Plus models and iPads do, but that landscape will not be available on the smaller device. Anyone else think the image suggests both versions will support a landscape interface?
