If the frame around the X is still stainless steel how are they making it gold? Is it just some gold plating? Wouldn’t that scratch easily?

same kind of finish applied to the Space Grey model currently - there are limited reports of flaking, but it doesn't seem to be a massive issue. Highly polished steel will suffer micro abrasions over time, that's inevitable gold finish or no.

USB-C makes absolutely no sense as a Lightning replacement. It's an inferior connector. It makes absolute sense as a replacement for both USB-A and Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort.
[doublepost=1535730196][/doublepost]

As a hardware engineer you are just flat wrong about this. The USB C connector and all of the standards it can potentially support.

Fasted reported speed through lighting connector 5GBs (was initially 480MBs, they may have adopted USB 3 speeds for more recent devices)
Fastest speeds through USB C 40GBs with TB3 and 10GBs with USB 3.1

Max power delivery with USB-C 100W
Max Power delivery with lightning 18W (highest reported value I could find)

They are both small, reversible, and easy to make waterproof. USB C headphones already exist and there isn't anything that apple is doing with the lightning connector that the USB C couldn't also accomplish. Back in the 30-pin days it actually made sense for apple to have a proprietary connector based on what was available and what they were doing, these days everyone is caught up. Lightning started because apple didn't want to wait for USB C to be developed and they don't want to change connectors again "so quickly" even though they've had it since the 5.

Apple doesn't need to waste its time improving the lightning connector and pushing the spec and standard forward, it has already been done. They need to just adopt USB C across the board and stick to developing the actual product.

People are living a good life when 90% of the posts in this thread consists of complains about how stupid the naming schemes is in a post about leaked images of the new iPhone models.

When you read through these comments it almost seems like the name of the phone is massively important for most people and some kind of deal-breaker...

Who cares about the name? It's not even displayed on the phone itself, the back only says iPhone... Why take this so personally? Does it even matter in the end? Will it affect your desire to get the phone, will it affect the total amount of sales? Not at all....
I care. And yes it matters so your blind allegiance to apple can do no wrong is flawed
[doublepost=1535735325][/doublepost]
And the haters are quick to notice.

No one cares about the names....will sell in record numbers regardless of what it’s called.
Lol count the number of posts on here about the ridulous name but yet no one cares? Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

As someone who has squashed a USB-C connector by rolling over it, I'm telling you that the Lightning connector is superior. You don't need to deliver 100W over Lightning. Similarly, you don't need to get data through Lightning at 40 Gb/s. Lightning is smaller in two dimensions and has a notch built in to hold the connector in place. It's also solid and can stand up to the kinds of abuse that actual non technical users put their cables through. Engineering perspectives are all well and good, but you need to take end users and everyday scenarios into account.

Ironically they will be cheaper then last year. Or at least that's what it have been rumored and I believe it.
[doublepost=1535695166][/doublepost]

Guys around here pay far to much attention to these "irrelevant" things.
Meanwhile, regular customers (probably 99%) focus on the device itself and don't give a toss about the name.
What’s give a toss mean?
[doublepost=1535735696][/doublepost]
Let me make simple for you all, its called the iPhone 10s
Then why not use 10 instead of X? If apple didn’t want that confusion it would have been pretty easy to do.

Apple has accidentally leaked images of the new 2018 iPhones that will be announced during its upcoming September 12 keynote, and those images were shared by 9to5Mac, giving us our first official look at Apple's upcoming iPhones.

Rumors have suggested Apple is planning to introduce three new iPhones this year: a 5.8-inch OLED device that's a followup to the iPhone X, a 6.5-inch OLED device that can be thought of as an "iPhone X Plus," and a low-cost 6.1-inch device with an LCD display.

The images that have been discovered confirm the existence of the two OLED models, which will be available in gold for the first time. Last year's OLED model, the iPhone X, was limited to silver and space gray.

Apple's new iPhones feature an edge-to-edge display with slim bezels and no Home button, as Touch ID has been replaced with Face ID, enabled through the TrueDepth camera system.

According to the leaked data, Apple is planning to call both the 5.8 and 6.5-inch OLED iPhones the "iPhone XS," which is an unusual choice. Apple typically gives all of its iPhones unique names, but the company was said to be struggling with a naming scheme for this year's devices.

Apple is planning to officially unveil its new 2018 iPhones on September 12, at a 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time event that's set to be held at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus. Apple will live stream the event, but for those who cannot watch, MacRumors will be featuring live coverage both on the site and on our MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

Cool, nice to know they are keeping the hardware mute button. Can't wait, seems like I've been waiting forever and squinting my eyes at this tiny iPhone X.

It's also solid and can stand up to the kinds of abuse that actual non technical users put their cables through. Well, if you're talking about practicality:

1. Countless 3rd party accessory manufacturers have to design 2 versions of every damn mobile accessory that make. USB C and lightning because apple just has to be special

2. Yes the actual end of the cable is smaller for lightning, but that is because the electrical contacts are on the outside, this means the receptacle on the phone has to be larger so the contacts press inward towards the lightning nib, when you take this into account the space consumed by both in the phone is the same. this is why the pencil has the connector sticking out, if it had a socket it wouldn't fit in the pencil's diameter.

3. I have never squashed any usb or lightning cable by rolling over it. Sorry you have, I'm assuming with an office chair. what I have had happen: apple lightning cables fail at the rubber strain relief or the internal wires open circuit. As well as getting little charred lighting contacts that eventually stop working (essentially making the cable one direction as when you flip it it will not charge) I don't think there is enough contact surface area for even 2 amps of charger with the design. This leads to charred connectors.

#1 is argument enough for me. You can have USB C cables (double-ended) that work with your wall charger, macbook, phone, headphone charging case, and whatever else and never have to worry about direction or orientation.

What I do think we need:
A smaller USB Standard (smaller than USB C and lighting) for extremely compact, lower power, and low-data devices. An alternative to USB C when it is too big.

If they really thought it was the future it wouldn't be roughly $4 per connector in royalty fees to include it in your product.

So the new budget phone will have a bigger screen than the "better" model but with less quality. Seems weird to me, and still think a slightly less bezelled iPhone SE with a slightly increased price and updated spec would have been a better option. If they keep the SE in the line up as the budget phone, will they be reducing the price seeing as the specs will be falling behind with the new model line up? Or stop selling completely - meaning the new budget iPhone isn't really budget.

I'm happy enough with my X, don't need anything bigger and doubt that any upgrades will be enough to make me want to buy, but I do like the new colour going by the pictures seen. :)

Hey, at least it's not "iTouch" or "iWatch".

Good for you. I have every reason to update my 6.

I wasn't talking about people who had older phones, you won't be disappointed at all, the X is unreal. It was the X owners I was referring to.

Yes...Even those people will still buy it. Name a product people buy or don’t buy bc of the product name. The only name that matters is Apple

Your point was no one cares which is what I was commenting on I didn’t say anything about whether people would buy or not obviously people care about the name

I remember a lot of people here saying the 5 was just a stretched 4S. What do you want to see with the iPhone that would excite you?

The OLED display opens a lot of possible features that Samsung has been delivering on for years. An always on clock, new/stock/text message ticker, etc.

The last few years of flagship Samsungs have come in much nicer colors than iPhone, and the finish that samsung has that almost looks like color behind a thin layer of glass is far prettier than Apple's cheap-crap looking rough aluminum finish (or in the case of Jet Black, shiny that looks like the same finish as a dollar store toy).

Revolutionary features like an SD slot and 3.5mm stereo pin would be better. I still don't see any reason to replace an iPhone 6s. imo the iPhone 8 is the same a 6s with a better camera and wireless charging. Of the 3 features, the only one I care about is the headphone jack. I don't see the 2018 models changing the equaltion.

I know I’m reaching here, but I hope the circle in the invitation refers to touch-ID coming back under the screen, that circle is reminiscent of the steel ring around the home button.

Well I don’t agree with you opinions of iPhones but nothing you suggest would be any sort of radical design change.woukd still look like a flat slab of glass. Because that makes the most sense. No point in reinventing something that doesn’t need to be.

Crazy leak.

Terrible name - iPhone XS. Supposed to be pronounced “ten ess” but will inevitably be pronounced “ecs ess” and eventually just sound like ‘excess’.

Maybe that’s what they want with that solid gold look?

Right - you probably said iPad is a horrible name because it sounds like a feminine hygiene product, back when it was fist introduced.

Is the Bezel on this Xs slimmer than it was in the X or is it the same?

I heard rumors about the bezel being Smaller.

What does distinct form factor mean? There’s only so many ways to go with a smartphone which is why they all kind of look similar now. Apple did try colored plastic and people hated it. The tech press hated it because they’ve decided anything not metal isn’t premium. Apple has used aluminum, stainless steel, glass and plastic. What other materials are there to use?
I would give anything for a plastic backed iphone to return. The the 5c was peak iphone. Most durable and best looking.

And the haters are quick to notice.

With the sales argument appeasing juvenile behavior, we should expect some pure imbecility by now
