They should just forego the XS part altogether and call it Max :D

But seriously, they’re getting a bit edgy with the names here - I’m wondering what the A12 will be called too, we’ve has fusion, bionic, so Ernie maybe? He did drive the fastest milk cart in the west :p

If those naming are real, don't know what Apple execs has been smoking

And what prey tell would you suggest they call them? The iPhone X thunderbird, cougar, raptor, hulkenberg ultra extreme manliness infinity.

Seriously some people might hate the names others might like them so I suggest you all calm down and stop fretting. The names are not important, I would not care less if Apple called them the iPhone poopenmeyeir, what is important is how the phones turn out. I.E specs and features etc.

Remember this?

At the end of today they will be referred to the S, R and Max

Watch your Verizon accounts. Scammers have people in the inside adding authorized users to subscribers accounts and lines to the account. Then the scammers go into a store upgrade a line and essentially and sticking the financing to the line owner.

It's just a discussion forum where people can air their views. It's pretty obvious the new names haven't gone down very well with MacRumors members so far but I'm sure a lot of them will be proudly displaying the new names in their signatures in a couple of weeks time. :D

LOL so true. Once the iPhone is out, on the pre-order day, everybody will be drooling over it

Terrible branding

Apple had the most powerful smart phone branding in the world built over 10 years and they do this?

It's going to confuse a lot of general public

How do you know it's not just Apple having fun creating buzz with fake names?

I really hope this is what actually happened.

Why ON EARTH would Apple, knowing that there are thousands of people with nothing better to do than hitting F5 on the source code for their website all day long, simply upload these things there before the event? Why can't they just wait or test this internally?

This is some intern-level stuff and it happens every year. And interns do not have clearance to do this stuff.

Anyway these are awful names - "iPhone Excess"? Is this a nod to the price? Should be called the iPhone XXX because that's what they are doing to consumers.

Wow, just wow. It's only 30 min since this was posted and we already have 70+ comments, most of the telling how horrible all of this is...

When I read the comments here, and everywhere else on the Internet.. I get the feeling like people are purchasing and choosing their phone based on its name…

I fully agree that Apple’s naming scheme is out of whack. There is no denying it. But come on? Who really cares? The name isn’t even displayed anywhere on the phone itself… And most people don’t walk around and tell everyone about their specific phones name and model.. If you are ever going to tell anyone about your phone you will most likely just refer to it as an iPhone. And honestly, who would really care about what phone and model you currently have?

Still people seem to make this into a big deal? Since when did this matter? It doesn’t matter, not even a tiny bit. It won’t affect Apple’s sales, and it won’t affect how the phones work and performance. It doesn’t change anything. Why do people even care? How is it even possible to have this crazy amount of negative feedback about something so meaningless as this?

They should’ve gone with the naming scheme they used for iPods and their Macs. iPhone (whatever generation, 2018) etc. Chuck in a iPhone mini/nano and an iPhone plus. Problem solved

Excessmax is a stunningly awful name. My brain is incapable of substituting the X for 10, so that's what I'll be stuck with. I must remember to never speak its name.

Terrible naming convention by Apple. Although the three models will sell like hot cakes.

They should just drop the numbering, as they already did with the iPad. No Apple product other than the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and a handful of accessories has a numbering system. It is not the "MacBook Pro 5" or the "iMac 9"; it is the "MacBook Pro mid-2018" or the "iMac mid-2018". Simple. Effective. Elegant.

Naming doesn't really matter to me. But consistency does.
