I'm just seeing how Apple's present-day iPhone lineup ranges from $699 to $1149

That's quite a big range for a single year of iPhone models.

They surely can't expect everyone to buy the most expensive one... and I certainly wouldn't shame someone for not buying it either!

#endphoneshaming

:p
But that's the whole point.

Even if I bought an iphone 6 or 6S today (say because that's what I can afford), I would still be seen with an iPhone which is perceived as the best that Apple had to offer at one point in time, even if that was many years in the past. And that especially matters in asian countries like China where you have an emerging upper middle class who see Apple as an aspirational brand.

How is samsung a second tier company when it's no.1 in market share? Htc maybe I can understand
Referring to any company as "2nd tier" is never a commentary on their market share; it's generally assumed that it's a commentary on the quality of their work. It's like that old stereotype of comparing a Maserati GT to a Ford Pinto... nobody really needs to ask which one is the "1st tier" option.

Honestly, at the end of the day, it's about the merits of the device, not the name - the latter is something people get whipped up into a frenzy about online, or maybe it's a little chuckle if someone asks you in person, "Which iPhone model is that?"

The planet will be OK ... :D

There are Samsung forums?

:p

A few, but this is the main one I use:

Well, in another few hours, we will have our answers. Sadly, that will be at 1 am in my country and I am currently still suffering from a viral infection since last week, so will be hitting the sack soon.

See you in about 9 hours time (it will be Thursday morning for me).

This forum is going to be lit.

Well, now we know that they really were thinking "Excess" o_O
Was hoping they started at $999 but if true I think this means we are going to see yearly price increases - now that the market has matured only way to grow revenue. $1149 next year?

Wow, just wow. It's only 30 min since this was posted and we already have 70+ comments, most of the telling how horrible all of this is...

When I read the comments here, and everywhere else on the Internet.. I get the feeling like people are purchasing and choosing their phone based on its name…

I fully agree that Apple’s naming scheme is out of whack. There is no denying it. But come on? Who really cares? The name isn’t even displayed anywhere on the phone itself… And most people don’t walk around and tell everyone about their specific phones name and model.. If you are ever going to tell anyone about your phone you will most likely just refer to it as an iPhone. And honestly, who would really care about what phone and model you currently have?

Still people seem to make this into a big deal? Since when did this matter? It doesn’t matter, not even a tiny bit. It won’t affect Apple’s sales, and it won’t affect how the phones work and performance. It doesn’t change anything. Why do people even care? How is it even possible to have this crazy amount of negative feedback about something so meaningless as this?

Not sure what kind of discussion you were expecting to take place in a thread about names. Obviously many of us who may own stock or otherwise care about the company image have reached a broad consensus that the name "Max" is rather basic and unfitting for Apple. In any case, forum posts are meaningless by their very nature, and this is probably all just venting - which is the whole point sometimes. I'll pre-order my XS Max, or whatever it's called, just like millions of others, and all of this will be relegated to forum history. It doesn't mean bitching now isn't fun.

They're just names. Regardless of what's stuck at the end, you'll all still call it your iPhone at the end of the day so less of the moaning please.

Moaning about moaning. How meta.

Galaxy S and note series?

Yea, Samsung is certainly positioning those phones against the iPhone (marketing and such), but they really aren't close to competing with Apple on the high end (yearly sales are close to a quarter of sales to Apple). It's a very different league. This is part of the reason why I think Samsung's focus is off and they should be focused on the mid-tier market in the US, not the premium market.

- iPhone (2018 Model)
- iPhone Plus (2018 Model)
- iPhone Pro / X (2018 Model)

Would have been less confusing and future proof.
Plus, when talking of the latest model you may just ditch the year.

I mean it's not like the Macbooks have the revision number in their name. They are just called Macbook (Late/Early 201x) and it works just fine.

Recently at the Macrumors community: "No way Apple is going to call it iPhone XR"

You are into something there. With Apple everything is predictable until it isn’t.
They’ll never make a phone. Or an 8-inch tablet. A stylus (just don’t call it stylus). A tablet. A watch.

Apple will do whatever the hell it wants and you’ll like it either way because we all know the others guys in the tech industry make tasteless sh*t. So there.

Fox business just reported the Xs Max as a 6.8" screen starting at $1100 - WOW
Not sure how they’d know but I never believed the rumor that the bigger X would start at $999. Cook says the X is the best selling model for every week it’s been on sale. Why would Apple reduce its price? And of course the bigger model is the perfect way of increasing prices.

Those are some stupid names if real.

Well according to you perhaps but others may like those names, just as some people may like your given name and others may hate it and think it is the stupidest name ever for a person to be called.

Each to their own then.

Suppose their trying to upsell to XR since thats the easiest one to say with spitting accidentally.

No offence but they are not going to upset to the XR as that is the so called budget model, they would upset instead to the X Max as that will be the high end model.
