Anyone have the Magbak wallet? The magnets in that wallet seem strong than the one from Apple. It's also cheaper.

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. I’m getting the mini and like the idea of having a really simple/slim wallet that magnetically attached to my phone. My biggest worry atm is that I think I need 4 cards on me (credit card, ID, access card to my office building, metro card), and I think this will only fit 3. And yes, very curious to see how this fits on a mini. I’m just going to buy it, and if it doesn’t work out I’ll return it. We’ll see...
Well you won't need a metro card for long with OMNY

Based on the MKBHD review, this sounds like an awful product to me unless you don’t mind your wallet falling off your phone when putting into a pocket.

I’m guessing this is also cheap leather since the wallet only costs $60. I’d rather use my Hermès wallet instead of spending $60 on cheap leather and potentially losing my cards/ID.

Looking forward to additional reviews but doesn’t sound promising.
Well to be fair, you ruined yourself. Anything is cheap and poor quality compared to a Hermes wallet. Hermes is known for the best leather in the world.

You get what you pay for.

In the Apple wallet, it's genuine leather, which is the lowest grade you can find.

But I'm also willing to bet your Hermes wallet cost a lot more than $60. Probably like 24x more.

I've always wanted Apple to partner with Hermes for a leather iPhone case and now Magsafe wallet.

Husband picked one up from the Apple store today.

Quick thoughts - Feels very good in the hands. Adds quite a bit of weight. Very difficult to take cards out while attached to the phone. I had to take the wallet off everytime I wanted to take a card out. Now debating whether or not if i want to spend 50+60 for this combo. XD
Thanks for the pics! This is the case/wallet combo I’m going with (although with a silver 12 pro) and it’s nice to see a picture of it in the wild. Looks great!

I have some rather weird and possibly dumb questions, please bear with me.

1) The wallet is shielded, so contactless cards must be removed to be used? I can't just tap the wallet with a single card on a reader and expect it to work?
2) while the wallet is attached to the phone/case in your pocket, is it possible/easy to take out the wallet while leaving the phone/case in your pocket?
3) A few people already mentioned that even single cards fit tightly in the wallet, I guess this means trying to take out that single card from the wallet while its attached to the phone/case, without taking the combi out from your pocket will be pretty hard/impossible?

TIA
I’m actually really curious about your first question too. I need to scan an access card every time I go into my office building, and it would be a huge pain if that means having to take the wallet off and take the card out every time I have to scan in. I’m hoping the shield is just on the back of the wallet and not the front, so hopefully any signal that needs to pass could still get out.

Speaking of taking the card out and to answer your other questions, I have heard from several people that you do indeed need to take the wallet off the phone in order to get any card out.

Picked up a saddle brown from Southampton (UK) yesterday.

As others have pointed out already the wallet seems to magnetise fairly tightly to the phone and needs a fair amount of force too detach. The smaller alignment magnet at the bottom is a bit weak meaning that the bottom can twist out of alignment fairly easily.

It doesn't detach by putting it in our out of my jeans pocket and feels secure in normal use. I am too old to carry off a pair of really skinny fit jeans so can't comment on what it would be like with tighter pockets. For me it works and is a keeper as I like the idea of being able to carry my phone with just a few cards when needed but it won't be a full time wallet and phone combo replacement.

  1. Tried this morning with a contactless credit card and it did not work until I took it out of the wallet. Not sure how an NFC card would function for keyless entry though.
  2. Yes, I can slide the wallet off the back of my phone whilst in my pocket and slide it back in and align without taking the phone out as well.
  3. Even with just a single card in the wallet you do need to remove the wallet and use the cutout to slide the card out. Not so much due to the card being a tight fit but it sits right down low in the wallet and there is very little of the card exposed to get your fingers on.
Hope this helps

That’s a fair point. I’ve love an Hermes lather iPhone case in Fauve Barenia. I think that would be beautiful!

What’s the back of the wallet like? Same leather as the front?

I quite like the idea of using this as a standalone wallet.

New Apple Wallet and also next to my Belroy Wallet. Works really well, I’d say a 2 card wallet but not sure it is a replacement for my Belroy. Connects well to the iPhone case. It is a case of Goldilocks ( not too hard and not too soft )

If you have to take the wallet off to get a card out, I don’t see the practicality of using the MagSafe wallet, versus using a traditional wallet.

I have the same bellroy in blue, also replaced it with the blue Apple wallet. It fits 3 cards but 2 are a better fit, I only have 3 cards in my bellroy sleeve so works for me.

Pretty much what I confirmed as well. It’s best with the silicone case because of the friction between the leather and silicone surfaces.

I don’t quite understand some of the criticism for this. It’s just a set of magnets so they’ll come apart if you push it with enough force.

Also, I agree with some of the comments on Youtube. I think you can just use it as a card holder and small wallet and attach it when you need to, eg. at the gym or while waiting in line to get a coffee or something. Other times, just put it separately in your pocket like any other wallet.

And if you don’t like it, don’t buy it.

My feelings as well. I’ve been using a slim cardholder as my every-day wallet for years so some of the concerns with the apple magsafe wallet—such as poor attachment or practicality—didn’t apply to me, or bothered me as much.

I thought of the magsafe feature as an added benefit that I didn’t have on my previous cardholder. It’s another slim cardholder that I can now attach to the back of my phone when desired. And if you don’t like this one, there will probably be more to come from third parties in the coming months. That said, I will not be buying this wallet for myself lol.

I initially ordered a black wallet on day one, only to cancel after getting my order delayed and seeing the initial mixed reviews. My local Apple store had them in stock today and I decided to give it another shot...

It holds a lot stronger to my clear MagSafe case than I thought it would and I’m actually not concerned about it being knocked off.

Using the phone with both a case and wallet attached isn’t uncomfortable, but it takes some getting used to. I find myself using the 12 Pro with two hands more often with the wallet attached. It’s much easier to pick up the phone when it’s facing up and the wallet is still on.

It holds three cards comfortably, but you definitely need to remove the wallet from your phone first to get the cards out. I recommend facing a card with raised characters inward to provide some grip when removing the cards, as pictured in the above photo.

I don’t know if this is common, but a minor thing to point out is that my wallet doesn’t lay completely flush with the phone. Cards or no cards, the bottom 3rd of the wallet curves outward.

After using it for several hours, I’ve come to like this unique accessory. It’s not perfect, but better than I thought it would be.

I plan on replacing my current slim leather wallet with this MagSafe wallet and seeing how it does long-term. As others have already pointed out, this is probably best used as a standalone wallet and placed on the phone as needed.

This link shows another video of the wallet and phone, I think it popping off here is expected, with jeans like this, and the ‘pop’ sound indicates to me it’s a decent magnetic connection. Thought I’d share

This wallet has made me aware of how I insert my phone into my pocket. What is with the awkward way these people insert their phones?

Opening my pocket with my finger while sliding the phone face down has always been the most natural. Any vids of ‘normal’ phone insertion out there? Ha

Can you get 3 cards and a cash bill or two in the wallet?
HOw about 2 cards and a couple cash bills?

2 cards and a couple of cash bills are fine. You can also do 3 cards and a cash bill, but it starts getting pretty tight beyond that.
