Apple Lets Several YouTubers Get Closer Look at iPhone X Ahead of Friday's Launch

Fluff. Nothing against the YouTubers involved, but it’s obvious fluff. These aren’t major players... That matters less than the fact that these aren’t real reviews in their own environments with no influence.

Fluff.

I'm so upset they didn't invite Marques Brownlee to review one. He's the best tech journalist on YouTube (imo). I guess they just wanted sheeples.
I don’t really get the MKBHD worship, he seems to have plenty of sheeples though. :D

Sure, he’s another data point, fine but there seems to be quite a bit of offense taken that he wasn’t part of this round of non-tech yt personalities campaign; he doesn’t really fit since he’s more of a tech blogger, right? I’m sure he’ll have something for his followers to watch.

I’d rather demo it in the store than rely on anyone else’s take; I like to live with things for awhile so I’d probably buy it with the thought of returning it within the window if I didn’t like it enough.

Say you have a really important call, text or email to send and you can't unlock via Face ID. While it may only happen intermittently and you could enter a passcode, I wouldn't tolerate such a frustrating user experience at such an inopportune time.

Here’s the thing though. This user experience already happens today with Touch ID.

And the NBC guy. Good grief. He could stumble over an Atari review in 2017. And that cast of characters around him. Barf.

If your fingers are too wet or dry, or it's too cold, Touch ID doesn't work nearly as accurately as well. And if your phone hot boots on you, you have to enter your passcode as well. Nobody has been inconvenienced by that to the point their super important business can't be done. You don't even need it to call for help anymore - Apple includes an emergency activation now that requires no unlocking... just pressing and holding 2 buttons.

And of course, you haven't tried Face ID. Nobody here has. Early indications based on the videos is that it works well and is a non-issue. Maybe a gen 1 version, but future versions will only improve on this. We saw the same with Touch ID.

Not exactly fluff. I think a lot of people here are missing the point of this round of videos... you are correct: they are not reviews. These are marketing pieces for showing off Face ID. Every one of these shows us a bunch of stuff we've already seen, but the one thing we have not seen until now is Face ID in action (outside of that one unauthorized video which got an engineer fired).

Every YouTube video shows off the head rotation registration process, which is repeated 2 times. We see people with glasses, facial hair, long hair, etc. Then we see how quickly it unlocks. These are not A-list vloggers for a reason: they're trying (perhaps unsuccessfully) to show that anyone can use it, that Face ID works, and how quickly it works.

The pro reviews are coming. That's when the media embargo lifts.

This was just a teaser, and the beginning of a long line of marketing to get people comfortable with life without the home button. This is really the only thing they really need to get people comfortable with in the next year, before more Face ID devices hit the market. They're very clear that they're all-in on the tech -- only a matter of time before it's on laptops, tablets and their entire range of phones.

"Guys, we invited you here because our marketing team figured out young people don't read newspapers or watch TV anymore. Who knew right? So here's a list of things we want you to mention how great they are, just put it in your own words. We're desperate to get teens to like us as a brand. Theres is no pay, but you'll get to play with the new hotness before everyone else and the snacks are on us. Don't mention the bugs, we'll sue your ass and boy will our lawyers crush you. Sign here."

Desperation.

Phone isn't selling as expected.

People are nervous at HQ.
Hmm...preorder was on Oct. 27th, Friday. So let's see...According to your theory, Friday's pre-orders didn't meet expectations. So in a sudden panic, Apple shipped a ton of phones to YouTube reviewers over the weekend, who filmed and posted their fluff pieces by Sunday/Monday, all in a desperate bid to make up for poor sales.

Lol. This marketing technique was decided on months and months ago.

Some context:

“We now believe pre-order demand could be closer to 50 million units of iPhone X vs. our original estimate of 40 million,” Ive writes, “which is more than double the current supply of iPhone X out of Asia currently available for shipments over the coming months. With the official launch of iPhone X in Apple retail stores slated for this Friday, November 3, we anticipate very high demand globally with limited supply of iPhone X on hand.” Daniel Ives, GBH Insights

"Apple asked partners to double manufacturing capacity."

Don’t doubt that. Apple simply can’t make them due to production issues from poor component production rates. I’ll wait for .v2 thank you. ;)

But still fired the engineer who's daughter posted the X video.

It's not to hard to understand that they violated multiple rules. One is you cannot record video on the campus, he also is not allowed to let anyone use the phone since it is not his to make the decision, the phone belonged to Apple. Not only that she used the phone, she recorded information off the phone and posted it online, along with other violations that the father should know since he worked for them.

Oh my god!!! The true depth sensors actually blink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know why, I don't like that.....

When you look at infrared lights through a camera and screen you will see the light if its on or off, or in this case blinking.

I really believe Apple should make iJustine their YouTube mascot. I used to find her videos annoying as hell. Then I didn't realize she was into video games. She has 4M subscribers. That's free marketing from her because she loves Apple so much. Let her be Apple's Don King/LaVar Ball.

She is practically rich because she has every Apple and Nintendo toy there is for mankind. She has like every Nintendo Amiibo. She just had an Xbox One X unboxing and worships Nintendo. Mar-Kezz Brownlee has like 5M but he's an Android dude. His favorite gadget was the Pixel XL from last year.

I started appreciating iJustine when she showed her Nexus One, S5, S7 edge, and Pixel XL. She is kinda like me but on opposite sides. She prefers iPhone but she can roll with Android. I prefer Android but I can still roll with iPhone. Stop wasting time arguing what is better and use it.

Another YouTuber who flatters iOS alot is David Rahimi (PhoneBuff). Self-proclaimed Android guy. Every speed tests, it's generally always iPhone winning. The next fastest would be OnePlus. I saw the OnePlus 5 beat the Note8 and Pixel 2 XL.

Apple, give Justine some more stuff to unbox right away! BooredAtWork and Steven Levy, not really interesting YouTubers. Still waiting for my boys, Michael Fisher and Dave Lee, to get it. Also JerryRigEverything and the top 2 most viewed reviews -

The Verge
Marques Brownlee

The Verge peeps are Apple users. David Pierce who is now on The Wired just loves Apple. It's those camera angles and different lighting that makes The Verge reviews appealing to watch.

People will like the phone. The price is still ridiculous. Like the 9.7 iPad pro before it. It’s just an iteration.

There is absolutely no reason for a price bump if you consider iPhone innovation up until this point.

This phone offers nothing groundbreaking compared to earlier models.

The most groundbreaking feature ever was the Retina display, and they didn’t kill us on price.

Thanks.

Are you using google translate?

Hey I have a question

I just seen verizon took out the payment for the iPhone X does that mean it shipped? Cause the order hasn’t updated
:)

Great stuff. Keep in mind that short of the FaceID and OLED display the phone is identical to the 8 Plus.
Also minus the portrait mode on the front and the accompanying API.

Apple NEEDS to KEEP Touch ID!!!
Our state law DOES NOT allow touching a phone in a car, let alone picking one up to fully divert one’s eyes away to make eye contact w/a phone waiting for you to "look" at it, and more States WILL follow!

Touch ID works FANTASTIC already! I get in my Accord Hybrid Touring & iPhone goes in the tray. I DO NOT have to glance at it, I just press Touch ID & Siri comes on via BlueTooth & everything works GREAT w/my voice. We’ve been blessed with 4 “Newer” Hondas, all 2015 or newer, ONLY 1 has Apple CarPlay (so it's not like we have old cars either). I can even say "Hey Siri" but sometimes the code/Touch ID is necessary. So, if Face ID becomes the only option, it’s a Min. $300 ticket! Plus, I want my wife & daughters Touch IDs so they can open my iPhone. So if anything, have BOTH Touch ID under the glass for in a car, and Face ID for buying lunch. ;-)

Dude. Take a breath.

Apple kept Touch ID on all but one of its phones. If it’s a dealbreaker for you right now, stick with one of them. Otherwise, get into your car, unlock your phone, and set it as you need to before you start driving. Many of us are in states with strict laws. I set my navigation and/or audio before I start driving, and I’m good to go. The car never locks, because it’s doing something.

As for your wife and daughter, passcodes work.

I found these videos very staged but I care **** about youtubers so I can't tell whether these are popular or not, but I don't care. But I doubt this is some new marketing initiative responding to pre-order numbers. This was probably a long-planned part of the marketing campaign and these videos were most probably produced before pre-orders.

These are some of the first infos to become public before the devices arrive at the customers hands, with proper reviews by big magazines probably coming in soon, maybe on delivery day. It's one of many measures to build up hype and get first infos out.

tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if some "scandals" like the lost iPhone 4 at the bar, this "leak" and others were intentional and no consequences occurred to people involved since it just was a marketing story to build up hype.

But that doesn't really tell about the preorder numbers in the past few days.

On a side note, in Germany the official Apple site quotes shipping times of 5-6 weeks but on every carrier website, you can order the iPhone X with delivery stated 03.11. Still a discrepancy in shipping times so I'll just have to see how long mine takes.

I just hope it has this leaked app switch click wheel gesture:

https://twitter.com/sdw/status/922979004231041024

The YouTubers went to the building in NYC the day before preorders went live. They were allowed to post about it today at the earliest.

As for the gesture, it’s part of the UI and was discussed during the keynote.

It’s also here starting around the 2 minute mark.

Ur average consumer had the best video here.

Soilder swiped to open faster than face id unlocked a couple times. I didn’t expect that to happen but I’ll try it for myself on Friday. :)
Craig Federighi mentioned that in his interview with John Gruber, that you can lift and swipe in one motion, and the phone will open when it verifies your face. I’ve been waiting for that. :)

What fact? Have you even read the articles you posted?
Clearly you haven’t. You posted speculation.
More fud.

Fine, you sit there with your fingers in your ears shouting lalalalalala.... and he links report the facts clearly, and they are well known too.

Maybe you just don't have a lot of disposable income? The phone can be had for <$1100 including tax, btw. Similar to high end smartphones like the Note 8.
[doublepost=1509391877][/doublepost]
Like the Note 8 Android fans rave about? In fact, the Note 8 even wraps the screen MORE on the sides. I actually give Apple credit for not making the bezels even thinner. It's actually annoying to have the screen wrapping around the sides (I have used a Note 8 extensively and own a Note currently).

That's equally bad ergonomics. The bezels make it easier to "get a grip" on your phone without having to hold it really awkwardly. Looking at people holding the X they do look a bit silly. I bet though, that it will be really uncomfortable to hold it for any length of time, I'm guessing it's just as slippery as previous phones and the no-bezel-situation will make it difficult to use a bumper or case to actually make it possible to grip the phone.

To do what? See how far into a lake he can drop it before it stops working? Perform a drop test? Compare its boot time to every other iPhone in existence? His videos are gimmicks.
I agree, with one little small change - His videos are total crap. Quantity over quality type of channel.

It’s also here starting around the 2 minute mark.

That’s a different gesture, a side movement on the “home button”, not the circular gesture we saw in the video. I’m quite sure this hasn’t appeared anywhere else and that this wasn’t in the keynote UI. Same function, yes, but executed different.
