…OS?

Tim: I love it!

What an alphabet soup for an OS name. Kinda reminds me of OS/2. They could have just used viewOS, realityOS.

For those old enough to remember the iPad launch like me, remember when it launched and people laughed at the idea of it being called “iPad”, equivocating it to female pads and stupid crap like that?

Then after a while the product became so ubiquitous you didn’t think of anything else other than a tablet

xrProOS is the name of the OS just like iOS, MacOS, tvOS. No one will be referring to these names except for some developers.
Yup, I get that it's the OS name. An OS is still a product. I disagree that its just developers that will have to use this, average consumers often know about the OS their stuff runs (especially with iOS, iPadOS and watchOS. At least MacOS has the other naming scheme that people can use).

We have no idea if this is the actual name.

xrOS seems more likely.
xrOS is still bad. For one, it's inconsistent with the times they used in X product names (or even XR, for that matter).

It also breaks from their more recent OS naming scheme, where the prefix is the product name — watchOS, MacOS, iPadOS, tvOS (the two major exceptions being iOS and audioOS on the HomePod), unless the physical product is called the Apple XR ______.

Add this to their other naming decisions — reusing the "M" chip naming from the motion coprocessor to their main SoC, the muddying of what Pro and Max mean with across the phone, headphone, and SoC lines, the weird distinction of "+" to denote subscription products but "Plus" to simply mean a bigger display (although somehow different from Max), the lack of clarity around what "Air", "Studio", and "Ultra" mean in their lineups, etc.

As they add more and more products to the lineup, it's becoming pretty clear (at least to me) that they haven't formed a coherent naming system, and now they're a little too far down the line for an easy fix.

Same here. I'm betting there'll be a suite of AR applications that will come with the device when it's released. I think many will be surprised about how useful they'll be - for both personal and commercial applications.
This initial device isn’t going to be very useful as it’s for those folks that will BUILD the personal and commercial applications.

*channeling Steve Jobs* "I hate it, the name is ridiculous, change it."
He would've scrapped this whole project. Tim has been distancing himself from it and reports say he's skeptical, but he doesn't have the guts to cancel it. He should listen to Steve's advice when he said "focusing is about saying no". Reality Pro will be the next Newton, I guarantee it.

No. Maybe you were seeing this in another forum. It certainly wasen't here or any reputable news site. What "people"?
There were definitely a bunch of those jokes made on MacRumors around the launch of the iPad and around the launch of other lines like the Mini. In particular, I remember people joking when the Mini came out that would also be a larger iPad called a MaxiPad. They weren't good jokes, but they were here.

I mostly just remember all the comparisons of the AirPods Max case to a bra.

Sounds as a tongue-twister and would be the first time Apple would use a “Pro” in their OS name. Are they going to separate iOS, iPadOS and macOS into regular and Pro branches too?

XrOS [ex-ar-os] sounds like a good name for a dinosaur. ;)

It was literally a Saturday Night Live Skit. Pretty much everyone in the world was making fun of the iPad and its name. The SNL skit said it's just a big phone named after a Maxie Pad. Search Youtube if you need to.
