where are people getting this idea? a half-step towards an OSX tablet? i don't think that would fly with the professional market, which they've had their eye on since forever. i know it's popular to say that apple has 'forgotten' about the true power users/ content creators, but i think that's not seeing the forrest for the trees. if they go combo OS, it will fail in what it intended to be. i foresee easy switching between OSes. grandma doesn't want to get confused, and creators don't want to be limited - on a device that will probably cost as much as an MBP to start. they'll all go surface or cintiq.

Agree.
I think the handoff stuff and making and recieving phone calls is supposed to be blurring the lines between OSX and IOS

I think we will get to a point where an iPad, iPhone and Mac will all feel like they are the same computer (content wise) and the only thing different is our input method.

I don't think they would of completely redesigned 10.10 look if they were planning to merge IOS and OSX, I do think we will slowly see all of these devices just acting as hardware to get to the same exact computer.

My gut feeling this is going to happen on Thursday
...
iPad Air 2
TouchID, A8X, 2GB RAM, 2880x1600 res (Retina HD), Split Screen, Thinner profile of 7mm
Wifi 16GB $499, 64GB $599, 128GB, $699
Wifi + LTE = $629, $729, $829

What are the odds that the mini vs full size get different amounts of screen real estate?

One thing that I never liked about the iPad vs the iPad Mini is that the screen real estate is exactly the same. Going from an iPad Mini to an Air, it is just a blown up version of what I saw before.
This is in contrast to the iPhone 5S, vs 6, vs 6+. All 3 of those phones have different amounts of real estate. I really like that. It makes getting a bigger device much more worth while, in my opinion.

What are the odds of this changing with the new iPads? Or does Retina HD just mean it will have more PPI, and the greater viewing angle? [Edit: I believe the iPhone 6 had the same ppi as the iPhone 5S, so I am just confusing myself further :) ]

Thanks.

iPad air at home. iPhone plus on the go.

Home = iPad air

not at home = iphone plus

That's the scenario. Why would I want to couch surf and read on a 5.5 inch screen, when I can use the much much bigger iPad screen instead. And now with calling enabled on iPads (when on same wifi network as your iphone), I can make and receive calls on the couch if my iPhone is not near me. So yes, there is a case for both devices still.

I'm with the other guy. Since I got the iPhone 6+, I've hardly picked up my iPad Air. I've bought a new iPad every year since the first one one, but I think I'll skip this year.

If the iPad Pro rumors come to fruition, perhaps I'll look at that. I agree that there's still a use case for the iPad (not everyone has or wants an iPhone 6+), but it's not enough of a case for me. Maybe I'll buy another ten shares of AAPL instead.

At this point, I don't think hardware will change much. I have an riPad Mini. Don't get me wrong, it's a great device. But the software just looks and feel old. I don't think iOs–or OS X for that matter–should be on an iPad. Apple should entirely rethink their tablet software and come up with something entirely NEW, so much more could be done with them.

Would you buy a new iPad (assuming you already have one) based on the rumoured spec if you had bought a 6+? I've read a lot about the market being saturated, apparently and so far I'd still be on my iPad 3 if I hadn't dropped it! 2gb of ram helps the case though.

Next year iOS and MacOS X will converge. For now they are releasing a bigger iPad to combat the Galaxy 12.2 Tab.

This should happen on Thursday.

I just have a feeling an pad air plus would be more than $100 more expensive. Otherwise the 128GB plus would be priced too much below the MBA.

I don't know the odds, but the iPad Air could go 3X while the iPad Mini could remain at 2X. Also, split-screen multitasking could be limited to the iPad Air. These are just thoughts. We'll find out in two days...

apple need to focus on meeting the demands of iPhone 6/plus...

this iPad probably going to be out of stock for while.

These new iPads are going to be incredible. I can't wait to get my hands on them.

I have an iPad 3 which is still great of course, but I just held an iPad Air for the first time a couple days ago.

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I couldn't believe how ultra thin & light it was. For a second I thought it was an iPad Mini. It really made the 3 feel like a medieval farming impliment. But the 3 does everything I need it to, so, no justification :p:mad:!!

You're missing the economic component to this. People need a phone for communication. People need a computer for full time work. Having all three is a luxury.

Here's the lens you have to look at it through -

iPad, iPhone, Computer

Pick 2 of 3.

Stagnant iPad sales represent this economic reality.

The iPad is kinda a bust. For me anyway. Especially now with bigger iPhones. They've looked basically the same all along, they basically offer the same function as my iPhone. I just don't see any reason to want/need one.. and I love looking for an excuse to buy Apple stuff. lol.

Same. I even bought an iPod Touch to keep around and use as an Airplay remote / streaming controller for music —*but I just can't convince myself to drop a few hundred on an iPad. I've got my iPhone at hand 99% of the time, and my MacBook Air is the next thing I go for if I need to do anything productive.

All you get on this site are rumours, rumours, rumours. The only facts are in the Apple store or at Apple's once in a while keynotes.

There is no better symbol of how stagnant Apple is than the iPad. It's little surprise that their sales are falling - Apple has failed to innovate in order to make people (normal people, as opposed to the Apple fanboys who would buy anything regardless) want to upgrade their iPads.

The only reason I'm considering replacing my iPad Air with the new version is the rumored anti-reflectivity screen. If that is real and works well, I might -- since I do a lot of reading via the Kindle App on the iPad. Then again, I might regardless, since I think work will pay for it and I'll give my wife my current iPad Air (as she is struggling with iOS 8 on her iPad 2.

iPad 3 was way too heavy. Which is why I got the Air.

That's hilarious. I needed a good laugh today.

The only reason the 12" Galaxy exists is because of RUMORS of a larger iPad. Samsung can whip these things out without the slightest bit of thought or optimization.

There is no 12" iPad coming this year.
