The iPad is kinda a bust. For me anyway. Especially now with bigger iPhones. They've looked basically the same all along, they basically offer the same function as my iPhone. I just don't see any reason to want/need one.. and I love looking for an excuse to buy Apple stuff. lol.

I travel for work so I love my iPad Air. I use it all the time at the client site and in the hotel. The iPad Air allows me to leave my personal laptop at home while on the road. It does everything I need - Email, Web, FaceTime, Pages, Movies, Music etc.

There is no better symbol of how stagnant Apple is than the iPad. It's little surprise that their sales are falling - Apple has failed to innovate in order to make people (normal people, as opposed to the Apple fanboys who would buy anything regardless) want to upgrade their iPads.

That is no better symbol of sheer ignorance on this site than comments like this.

Why is launch date always fridays?

Because if it were any other day, people messing with their new toy.....whoa, where did that come from....excuse me...their new business productivity tool, would cause a severe fall off in productive hours of work for the rest of the week. Launch on Fridays and people have all weekend to overdose on pure, uncut Apple goodies.

You're missing the economic component to this. People need a phone for communication. People need a computer for full time work. Having all three is a luxury.

Here's the lens you have to look at it through -

iPad, iPhone, Computer

Pick 2 of 3.

Stagnant iPad sales represent this economic reality.

Well I have a PC, and iPad Air and and iPhone Plus.

Use case: 1. working from home, in home office, on the PC

2. most nights (after work) watching TV and surfing or reading via Kindle App = using iPad Air.

3. Anytime outside the house, like at work or wherever I'm not at home, using iPhone Plus.

My gut feeling this is going to happen on Thursday

iPad Mini Retina 2
TouchID, A8, 1GB RAM, 2048x1536 res (Retina HD), Thinner profile of 7mm
Wifi 16GB $399, 64GB $499, 128GB, $599
Wifi + LTE = $529, $629, $729

iPad Air 2
TouchID, A8X, 2GB RAM, 2880x1600 res (Retina HD), Split Screen, Thinner profile of 7mm
Wifi 16GB $499, 64GB $599, 128GB, $699
Wifi + LTE = $629, $729, $829

iPad Air Plus
TouchID, A8X, 2GB RAM, 3840x2160 res (Retina HD), Split Screen, Thinner profile of 6.9mm
Wifi 16GB $599, 64GB $699, 128GB, $799
Wifi + LTE = $729, $829, $929

Next year iOS and MacOS X will converge. For now they are releasing a bigger iPad to combat the Galaxy 12.2 Tab.

This should happen on Thursday.
iPad Air plus 64gb. I'm in!

where are people getting this idea? a half-step towards an OSX tablet? i don't think that would fly with the professional market, which they've had their eye on since forever. i know it's popular to say that apple has 'forgotten' about the true power users/ content creators, but i think that's not seeing the forrest for the trees. if they go combo OS, it will fail in what it intended to be. i foresee easy switching between OSes. grandma doesn't want to get confused, and creators don't want to be limited - on a device that will probably cost as much as an MBP to start. they'll all go surface or cintiq.

This. You get it. There won't be a convergence of OS X and iOS into one OS. They will continue to share features and have similar look and feel but will remain two independent systems designed for different types of computers (touch versus non touch). iCloud makes switching between these two systems seamless, it will continue to get better at this. Apple has pretty clearly stated they aren't interested in morphing their two operating systems into one. The steps taken in ios8/Yosemite make it pretty clear that their goal is to streamline the user experience by making their different systems work seamlessly together so the user gets the best possible experience on whatever device they are using. Microsoft learned the hard way people do not want the same OS on all devices.

It would be a mistake if Apple were not to have a new iPad Mini these year. There are a lot of users that don't like something as big and HEAVIER like an iPad Air nor somethigh with a smaller screen like the iPhone 6+.
There is a lot of current and upcoming competition in the Android market if Apple were to dissapoint ther iPad Mini customers.

Im sure the mini will be updated but I don't see many people in the market for a iPad mini turning even last years retina mini down for any android tablet. If Apple doesnt update the mini, I'm sure they will reduce price of the current mini.

You really think they're going to move the Air 2 to a 16:9 aspect ratio from 4:3? I think that has to be the longest shot ever. I could MAYBE see the 'Plus' going there, but not the Air 2. If they increase resolution on the Air, it'll go to 3072x2304, almost certainly (3x elements). 16:9 tablets are horrible to work with. They're fine in landscape orientation (for movies), but look absolutely horrible in portrait.

Me too. But we both represent a small minority.

It's called versatility. I believe Apple next year will release a tablet with MacOSX and replace the MacBook Air. I believe that will be the goal as laptops and PC's are stagnate and not much growth. The tablet market is the same. So anything to improve their lineup I believe Apple is willing to look at this as an option.

We got a 5.5" iPhone. We got a 7.9" Mini. So Apple is willing to respond tot he market.

Also could have something to do with iPad displays being a few years behind those of other tablets. Especially the Mini, what a joke that display is. Even the Air - compare it to a Samsung display and it's just blah. People will pay more for an iPad if it's a premium tablet, but paying more for less is repugnant to many buyers. I know a few people who switch to Android tablets because they didn't want to pay extra for a worse display.

A 5.5" screen is hard sell to replace an iPad. 5.5" display is still in the realm if using it because it's what you have on you, i.e. it's portable. Try reading or web browsing for a few hours and 5.5" is just too small.

What are the odds that the mini vs full size get different amounts of screen real estate?

One thing that I never liked about the iPad vs the iPad Mini is that the screen real estate is exactly the same. Going from an iPad Mini to an Air, it is just a blown up version of what I saw before.
This is in contrast to the iPhone 5S, vs 6, vs 6+. All 3 of those phones have different amounts of real estate. I really like that. It makes getting a bigger device much more worth while, in my opinion.

What are the odds of this changing with the new iPads? Or does Retina HD just mean it will have more PPI, and the greater viewing angle? [Edit: I believe the iPhone 6 had the same ppi as the iPhone 5S, so I am just confusing myself further :) ]

Thanks.

The iPad Mini was the response to the Nexus 7. Apple would have missed out on a huge market opp if they only had the 9.7" model.

Retina HD qualifies for products that have more than 326ppi pixel count. Thus the iPhone 4.7" has a similar pixel count. The pixel count of the 7.9" is 324 in which qualifies under Retina HD. I believe they will have a screen coating to improve lighting and reflection for outdoor use.

I just have a feeling an pad air plus would be more than $100 more expensive. Otherwise the 128GB plus would be priced too much below the MBA.

Not really! Here is why...the average selling price of the iPad is around $400-$500. If they remove the 32GB version and provide 64GB to the buyer the likelihood of the buyer buying the 64GB increases due to more storage from last year's 32GB price. Thus improves Apple's revenue and selling price to the larger storage model.

The cost on a iPad 9.7" 128GB is less than $250. There are huge margins if buyers opt for the 64GB model as it would be last years 32GB model.

A larger iPad version would run them at least slightly over $300. The margins improve with a larger storage version.

iPad air at home. iPhone plus on the go.

Home = iPad air

not at home = iphone plus

That's the scenario. Why would I want to couch surf and read on a 5.5 inch screen, when I can use the much much bigger iPad screen instead. And now with calling enabled on iPads (when on same wifi network as your iphone), I can make and receive calls on the couch if my iPhone is not near me. So yes, there is a case for both devices still.

For some people, I guess. Just definitely not for me. I'd rather hold my phone than a big iPad. Different people like different things though. I'd like to get excited about iPads, there's just never been anything exciting about them to me. I bought an original for my family. They never used it. I never used it. Had a great deal on a newer model iPad, so I bought it. Never even touched it more than 3-4 times in months. Sold it as well.

That's hilarious. I needed a good laugh today.

The only reason the 12" Galaxy exists is because of RUMORS of a larger iPad. Samsung can whip these things out without the slightest bit of thought or optimization.

There is no 12" iPad coming this year.

Never say never. Analyst said that the iPhone 5.5" wasn't coming this year and look what happened. Don't be surprised to see a shake up in the lineup come Thursday. If not, I will be content with a 9.7" Air 2.

Really? There are people who are still interested in ipad?

After iphone 6 plus, no thanks. These things are just too big and too clunky.

Only thing that would slightly interest me would be the bigger version but they are not ready for that.(like surface style?)

More importantly, I hope ipod touch 6 plus comes out(but no hope at all).

And where is this fantastical new macbook air? So basically, this thursday is going to be big snooze fest.. only thing it might be interesting would be apple pay announcement along w/ apple watch progress?

My resolution numbers are off, but I expect Retina HD for all models. You're right though in terms of 4:3 vs. 16:9. I see the iPad Air Plus going 16:9 though as iOS8 fully scaled to any resolution. I can't see a 4:3 iPad Air Plus

he didn't say "never". He said "not this year"....

Man you must have small hands...I have average hands for a guy and the iPhone 6 Plus I have feels average sized.

The iPad Plus or iPhone Plus aren't for everyone, thus Apple is creating options for certain users.
