You can call it iPad Plus if you'd like instead, but currently it would make very little sense to run OS X on any iPad. iOS and OS X are not interchangeable, they are designed for very different platforms and methods of input.
Makes me wonder how much longer we will have to wait for first OS X touch device...

iPad Mini 4 gets A9 chip while iPad Air 2 keeps last gen A8X? Seems unfair... What about a under-the-hood update to A9X for iPad Air 3?
9to5mac says that the iPad mini 4 will have an A8 chip. Also, we may want to consider the possibility that A9 < A8X in terms of CPU and GPU performance.

As for the iPad Air getting the A9X, the A9X may be too power-hungry for the iPad Air form factor (which could happen if it's designed for the iPad Pro).

EDIT: Never mind, the 9to5mac report now says "faster A-series chip" instead of "faster A8 chip." I think it was edited shortly after my post (see here for the original quote).

I do not often agree with what Microsoft does as I prefer Apple products. However, moving to one OS in today's technology environment makes sense. The tablets and phones hardware now make a single OS possible. A couple years ago not a reality. One OS solves so many of the intergration problems we see today. A good first move for an enterprise (Pro) product move to Mac OS. If Microsoft can do it, a piece of cake for Apple. Apple controls all aspects of the environment. I would upgrade if Mac OS installed immediately.

Perhaps the 'iPad Pro' part of the keynote will just be a teaser preview, much like they did with the Mac Pro at WWDC 2013...?

How is it a piece of cake for Apple? iOS runs on ARM. OS X is x86.

Here's what i think - The iPad Pro will be a better dual purpose laptop/tablet than a Surface... Because people like the Surface... (I don't)

Apple should do it better. Maybe a true "dual device" thing
- iPad in a detachable screen for tablet mode
- MacBook in the keyboard case for mac mode

-- uses Intel's wireless screen connection for mac mode
-- leverages apple "continuation" feature
-- uses force touch to swtich between ipad/mac

-- no kickstand (supported by the base?)
-- no need to run a full OS in tablet mode

The two cpus would share screen, storage, and maybe battery.

I only carry one device.

iOS runs pretty well on the simulator. Just integrate that into the OS sorta like rosetta was so and you can run iOS apps side by side with OS X apps. Obviously there will need to be some sdk updates so that iOS can shared data with OS X apps, but much is already there (in terms of running iOS on OS X).

Basically, build a Surface Pro like device that runs OSX, integrate the simulator into OS X with hooks that can access the hardware directly (so it looks like an iPad to iOS Apps) and you have a good start. Then add features to allow iOS and OS X to talk to eachother and give iOS access to any new features of the hardware (pen, etc..).

I'm very skeptical of this, although it would be a pretty awesome event.

Those are a LOT of new products to be announced at once, and the attention would be heavily divided between the 4 of them. Guess we'll find out soon enough!

All products are not all worthy of equally proportionate attention. The bands are filler. The iPad mini is just a product line gap filler, so it won't get/doesn't need much play. The iPad Pro will be mostly about peripheral things such as the stylus (assuming there is one), and feature a few partner pro apps. The iPhone S will get most of the time because it is the big $ item. And TV will bring back the "one more thing" because it will have the most surprises (even if we have heard the rumors, seeing them incarnated will be major-- and there will be a few surprises as well).

I'm guessing that will be the order, and the build-up.

The MS Surface RT was ARM. Besides the new Core M CPU's are rumoured to appear in phones and tablets. Maybe the PRO runs on one of the new skylake CPU's :)

I'm not sure what the beef people have with iOS is. Apple has added tons of multitasking functionality to iOS 9, and with apps like Microsoft Office coming to iPad, you can pretty much do 90% of a MacBook does.

The surface RT also used a cut down version of Windows, and you could only use app store apps. The app store was so terrible that even the iPad was a better buy than the RT, which is why it failed.

Along with unveiling the next-generation iPhones, the revamped Apple TV, and new Apple Watch Sport bands at its September 9 event, Apple is also likely planning to introduce the updated iPad mini 4 and the much-anticipated larger-screened iPad Pro, reports 9to5Mac.

While the event will see the debut of the 12.9-inch tablet, Apple does not plan to ship it until November, following late October pre-orders. A September introduction for new iPads is not in line with Apple's past iPad updates, which have come in October for several years running, but Apple may be introducing the iPad Pro several months early in order to give developers time to create apps for the new device.

Apple also plans to introduce the iPad mini 4, a significant update that brings the 7.9-inch tablet in line with the existing iPad Air 2. It appears the 9.7-inch iPad Air 2 may not be updated in 2015, with Apple instead focusing its attention on the iPad Pro and the iPad mini 4 and pushing the iPad Air 2 update back to 2016.

New Macs are also not expected to be included at Apple's September event, and with the iPads being debuted this month instead of next month, it's unclear if we will see two fall Apple events in 2015 as we have in past years.

Today's report warns that while Apple's plan is to unveil the iPad Pro at the September 9 event, the company could choose to delay its introduction until October.

In addition to a larger 12.9-inch display, the iPad Pro is expected to include an A9 processor, 2GB of RAM, a Force Touch-enabled stylus, and perhaps USB 3.0 ports that will support peripheral devices. The tablet will run iOS 9.1, an update to iOS 9 that will debut in November when the iPad Pro launches.

May I can get the iPad Pro and tell the spouse the keyboard broke off of my 12" Macbook. Very stealthy huh ;)

Tim Cook: "All right guys...now that we showed you the iPad pro and Apple TV....I want to thank you all for coming....and ONE MORE THING"

Everyone is whoo-ing-

Tim Cook: "We want to tell you that.....EVERYONE IS GETTING FREE U2 ALBUM!!!"

Everyone is boo-ing.

Tim Cook: "Thank you, have a great day!"

What a load of crap. If it's two well known rumor products are coming for this event...I'll be throwing tantrum at Tim Cook. "where's my computer...where's my mac pro!!"

September is not for Macs.

i"m surprised to hear this, i thought that Apple would be announcing it at a separate event in October, not sure how reliable this information is tho. Wouldn't Apple be worried that the iPad Pro could upstage the iPhone 6S or the other way around? i'm looking forward to seeing the iPad Pro so if it's announced next week that's great :) I'm just surprised that they would do this.

really, who are your sources?

Previous keynotes over the past 10ish years.

Look at how many times Apple has announced two new products that each could have their own keynote every and done so when announcing a new iPhone too. They don't take the thunder away from the iPhone announcement.
