Drop the “mini” name and sales might improve. Just call it iPhone.
Why?

Considering the Mini is for people who specifically value having a small phone, I doubt they are afraid of the small name. Besides, its not like it says Mini on the phone.

Calling it "iPhone 12", like the regular "iPhone 12", would just cause confusion.

It would sell well if it was a normal year.

Why do you think people want small devices? It's because of their clothing.

But if you're stuck at home all day you don't need to worry about that so a larger phone makes sense.

When the world returns to normal and people start needing to wear suits again, the Mini will sell.

It's all my fault! I was planning to buy a 12 mini, but my 1st gen iPhone SE is still working like a charm.

Maybe I'll go for iPhone 13 mini, if it has a minijack for my earphones.

I know, I know, it's time to switch to lightning earphones or those fancy "blue tooth" thingies, but I won't be able to use them with my old iPod.

So maybe it's Apple's fault for making indestructible devices.
If you absolutely have to have a headphone jack there's plenty of smartphones on the market that offer it. They're much cheaper too. I don't see what the problem is.

Even if they make a 13 mini there won’t be a headphone jack

People who think that these iPhone Minis might become the new SE someday must be delusional.

First of all, it's now proven beyond any doubt that your average consumer doesn't want this form factor. And Apple sure aims at mass market with the SE. So it's a no go.

And second, these Minis are a premium design - they're pretty expensive to manufacture. It's not a design suitable for porting to a budget device.

Next SE will be based on iPhone XR/11 design. Big and cheap

Come off it, the only phones that probably outsold the mini would be the iPhone pro and the iPhone 12. Maybe, maybe the Samsung S20 or the iPhone 11.

any other phone manufacturer would be over the moon if they sold as many of their productas Apple has sold of the mini.

ps, love mine, it’s just right

This actually seems like the sort of thing Cooks apple should be getting right - knowing demand numbers on a product.

This isn’t really an iPhone mini problem. Apple also paid out in 2019 and 2020 for lack of display purchases as well. You know, when the mini had yet to exist or been released for less than 2 months, respectively.

They priced that thing wrongly. Plain and simple. Battery weak, price too steep.
I absolutely love mine, although I do wish the screen was a tad wider and shorter. I'd actually pay MORE for the 12 mini vs the 12, but I know I'm in a really small majority for that.. But yeah, the biggest problem with the mini is the price for what you get. Unless you really want the smaller screen size there is no reason to get one. For $100 more it is a much better deal to get the regular 12 which has the larger screen (if that is what you prefer or if it doesn't bother you) and much better battery life. One of the additional compelling things about the original SE besides the handier form factor was that it cost much less than the 6s and 6s plus and also had better battery than the 6s.

This is a supply contract issue. Don’t read into it too much. This isn’t an App Store developer contract. It’s a big manufacturing contract that has multiple clauses and features most readers are not used to seeing, and thus claiming that the headline indicates something else.

I don't believe that's it at all, rather, a number of factors that for me at least put it out of place. The biggest things I would point out are…
  • The small 10% difference in price to the iPhone 12. It's priced too close for anyone but someone that specifically wants the form factor to buy given display and battery sizes.
  • The iPhone SE 2020 is too aggressively priced in comparison coupled with Apple's slow release of the form factor so those going for that size have gone there instead. Many like myself have gotten used to a larger phone in the wait time (I would typically be a buyer of the mini but after getting used to a larger phone I'm not so sure now - Apple was 3 years too late in releasing the mini for me) and/or those that didn't wait bought the SE last year.
  • COVID-19 has meant that we are all moving less. What difference does a compact form factor make when you're planted on our sofas?
Generally speaking I would put it mostly down to Apple simply not being consistent and being slow with smaller product offerings.

I just bought one yesterday. I love it already. At the T-mobile store I was at, they only had two phones, a black 64GB, and the blue 128GB that I purchased. So, either they don't have the stock because they aren't selling it and decided not to stock it, or they aren't able to sell it because they don't have the color/size people want.

I think a lot folks in this thread who are harping on the idea of a smaller screen (and those who ask for them) are missing the point that for many of us interested in the mini, Apple's other strat of putting the best cameras in their pro line in order to differentiate it is keeping us from going the smaller route. I was looking closely at the mini, but ultimately pulled the trigger on the 12 pro. I just think it's a little ridiculous to ridicule people asking for smaller screens and expect them to be happy with whatever else Apple decides on designing into or out of that form factor.

But but but I want a small phone so everyone else does!!!! [\sarcasm]
Looks like the market has spoken. The reason the mini is only slightly cheaper is because the internals are the same as the bigger iPhone 12... and same tech. So near enough similar costs.

Unlike a lot of doubters on here, I'm hoping that Apple realizes that the iPhone 12 mini sold so poorly because most of the customers who were interested in it had already purchased an iPhone SE 2 earlier in the year, not knowing that something more suited to their needs was right around the corner.

I agree 99.9%.
For the sake of keeping it fair and avoid potential barrage of negative comments I would just have added “This is the problem with listening to small very vocal groups and not fact checking, validating or otherwise taking a second read” at what that seemingly very loud problem seems to be to adapt accordingly.

Now, granted, even that might attract trouble since just the suggestion of investigating and/or fact checking is sometimes also met with “you are part of the problem”.

EDIT: typos.

I do not believe that Apple ever gambles on a big scale. They still must have sold a reasonably good number of 12 minis, one of them to me. 😉
