Macrumours seems to love focussing on the articles claiming the iphone 12 minis sales have been poor (probably as they know it attracts so much attention), yet this one from Gizmo China that i have pasted in other threads states the opposite, that the 12 Mini was the 10th highest selling phone of 2020 with 14.8 M units, even after only being released in November (data obtained from Omdia):

Had the iPhone 12 Mini come out before the SE, I would have snagged it up. I get the impression many people decided to go the cheap route when it was revealed the SE had the A13 Bionic. It was also difficult to say no to the amazing SE deals carriers were offering. (e.g., Visible)

I’m still rocking the SE until the 13 is revealed...the “Mini” is still an appealing option for me, especially if it has better battery life than the SE. I hope they keep it around and just estimate and understand their money conscious middle class customers better.

Certainly a shame for those who like the smaller size, but I don't think Apple will just tolerate low sales for its flagship product when a different arrangement could bring in more money.

As a happy 12 mini user, I will be fine with a 5.8” iPhone too.

However, I do not believe Apple is losing any money.

The current lineup is quite fragmented as it is. For example, what’s the point of still selling XR? This also can be considered as “losing money”, since discontinuing XR could up the sales of 11 and 12.

Then we have SE 2020, which is a very appealing offering to anybody who does not care about all the bells and whistles.

Nevertheless, Apple sell them all and must have a good reason for it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hmm its a shame for small phone fans. I mean personally I bought and mini and returned it. Although I liked the feel in my hand the screen was just too small. I think they should push it up to 5.6 or back to 5.8. Perfect size. I find 6.1 just a tad too big.

Agreed, I am happy with any screen size between the current mini and 5.8”, but anything bigger is just too big for me.

Thanks for posting that.

Furthermore, the SE2 was the second highest seller last year according to this particular source. This demonstrates just how popular a small form factor phone (with a tiny 4.7" screen, no less) can be at a lower price point.

This strongly suggests there is a market for a small form factor phone between the $399 price of the SE2 and the $699 price of the 12 Mini. It's just a matter of getting the right mix of features at the right price. The 12S/13 Mini is likely already set to arrive with the same feature set as the 12S/13. For the following generation Apple could theoretically de-content (under-screen TouchID instead of FaceID and less sophisticated rear camera array for example) to reach a more attractive initial price point.

Another way to look at it is, how much more can you charge for an SE with an edge-to-edge screen, more modern camera, and other contemporary iPhone staples like a current process and more storage? Common sense says it isn't $0 dollars. Apple is obviously sophisticated enough to be asking these questions, and they have the ability to collect and analyze the data (not harvested in any significant way from social media, contrary to some misunderstandings) so that they can arrive at an answer. It's an iterative process, and all we've seen so far is the first attempt.

Everyone thinks that Apple is mad the iPhone mini isn’t selling well.

That means people are paying the $100 price bump to get the 6.1” iPhone 12 ;)

I think they’ll keep it around.
You must cease and desist from the proprietary information you're dropping!

Blame the Rona. Of course one situation is not necessarily emblematic, but I wanted one, but I wasn't going to an Apple Store during a pandemic. And I'm not buying one without feeling it in my hands first. And by the time I get my second shot, we're already half-way through the product year, I might as well just wait until September at this point.

It was a Marketing blunder more than anything !

Nothing wrong with the size.

They should have packaged it up in the exact same chassis as the two Pro models.

If they wanted to differentiate it vs the two Pro models, OR simply to cut costs, drop the so-called Telephoto camera.

If it has been released this way, IMO, it would have sold like popcorn.

Apple basically sucks at Product Planning & Definition.

Apple under Jobs did a much, much better job of it.

Tim Cook is a Manufacturing Operations Efficiency Specialist, NOT a product OR services guy !

This is the problem with listening to small very vocal groups, not just for Apple but for the world. Twitter/Forums/Reddit are not representative for anything.
I'm pretty sure the problem is that anyone who wanted a small screen gave up and bought the SE. Apple destroyed their customer base by releasing a competing product for 1/2 the price a few months before the 12 mini. They have no one to blame but themselves.

Might want to take a critical look at the above. Objectively Apple has flourished under Cook in way that would not be possible under Jobs. Seems like a Manufacturing Operations Efficiency Specialist would have a hard time in getting Apple to $2T and have a record breaking quarter such as the previous one.

Am I the only one that thinks the Mini is good value? All the same internals as the 12 but $100(~13%) cheaper. Granted, my Mini has loads of problems that seem to make it slower than the Xs Max it replaced (camera and other apps always crashing and not working with no fix), but assuming it is as fast as the rest of the 12 lineup, it is powerful. Maybe it's proving to be a much harder sell for most.

The miss here for Apple was not making the mini a pro model. The lineup should have been:

Pro Line
iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12 Pro Mini

Value Line
iPhone 12
iPhone SE

You have forgotten 11 and XR still being sold, falling into your “value line”. There are simply too many iPhones at the moment. We are geeky here in these forums, yet many people just wanting a good phone will be very happy with SE 2020 if they want something “small” or XR/11 if they want something bigger. Both offer a very good price/features mix, IMO.

You're comparing a problem to a want. The keyboard was a problem. A small iPhone is a want. They don't compare.
they don't have to compare, you missed the point, the contention here is whether forums/reddit/twitter is a accurate representation of the masses, sometimes it is sometime it isn't.

The SE made the Mini redundant. Nearly half the price and not that much bigger. Once they ditch the SE and replace it with the Mini at a cheaper price, all will be well.

Hahaha! Those who wanted the 5.4” iPhone did not carry through on purchasing one as of yet!

I still think there's a big market for small phones. My wife got a mini, and I would have too, but I don't want the downgraded version of a phone when I'm spending big money. I want those Pro features.

There's also a worldwide pandemic going one so people aren't really able to see and feel these phones as much in person.

Let's see how the 2022 iPhone mini performs first before declaring it dead. But I really think they should have a mini pro. Not everyone wants to settle for second best in features.

I was happily going to swap from my huge iPhone 11 "back" to the perfect size of the mini but then I saw the battery life stats. Fix that and I'm in [again]. I still have my Ericsson T28 and two Sony Ericsson XPERIA "minis" (E10i & ST15i) in my mobile museum for the kids to admire. They're the size phones should be. Yeh, I know, useless screens in todays world, but still...
