I just went to Costco online and there was not a single new TV that had 3D as a feature. None that I could see anyway.
Yep no 3D TVs for sale in Europe anyway from LG, Sony or Panasonic in this years new range. Might be some legacy models left to purchase.

Can't wait to be proven right that most (if not all) purchased HD content will be automatically upgraded to 4K.

I'm sure you will and I'm not sure why this is even a surprise to anyone that Apple will be offering 4K movies. It's public knowledge that Apple announced at WWDC support for H.265/HEVC across the ecosystem and in particular for tvOS 11. It's documented. HEVC is rarely used for <4K content, so this is clearly an effort to bring 4K to tvOS, but it will likely be in the next gen device.

Amazing how simple it is to use google to find stuff and check your facts before posting and giving someone a resounding NO, lol.

Yeah, it hasn't slowed down at all.

just never really took off at all either

I meant in regards to theater movies. It doesn't seem to be going away.

You've obviously never seen 4K.

I have. It can look amazing, especially with UHD Blu-Ray. But as you drop the bitrate, the quality drops. This inevitably means at some point the quality falls below the best 1080p. Multiple streaming services fall on or below this level. Apple videos at 1080p have generally been better than streaming, but far from Blu-Ray quality.

The Apple video quality was more distinguishable from the disc equivalent in the move from SD to HD. Hopefully that trend does not continue to UHD, otherwise it may be hard to tell from good 1080p.

So although there's a chance I could "lose" the digital downloads, I'd also expect to replace blu rays at some point down the line, when the next format comes along.

Well, Blu-ray + Digital HD gives you both the Blu-ray and a cross platform digital download while iTunes movies are limited to Apple hardware and iTunes on Windows.

There are many people saying 4K UHD Blu-ray will be the last physical movie format, so assuming it succeeds chances are you won't have to replace them with another format ever again. (Just like CDs nowadays, although I guess it's possible that 4K UHD Blu-ray will end up like the SACD considering that a lot of people don't seem to care that much about quality and still buy DVDs...)

The next gen Apple TV has to have an analog audio output on it.

I'll say it again, the next gen Apple TV has to have an analog audio output on it. Otherwise, Apple is promoting the purchase of the Airport Express, simply for headphone output. That is such bad design.

Truly, am I the only one out there who uses his Apple TV in conjunction with either powered monitors, a vintage stereo, or travels with it to meetings where there are speakers only compatible with 1/8" headphone jacks? The string of wonky Amazon HDMI audio splitters that I have to string in series to my setup just to hear sound is hilarious. I wanted to love Airplay, but it isn't a primetime solution. As in, I tried it numerous times with all the best gear, but it's too buggy & the manual setup process required each time you turn on the Apple TV takes away from my impulsive need to just turn on the TV and hear something.

Right now, I'm using an Amazon Trond bluetooth 4.1 receiver, which gets me 90% of the way there, but leaves my floor riddles with cables, walwart adapters, etc... Sure there is audio through the HDMI cable, but that assumes you have good built-in speakers, but last time I checked, modern TVs possess nothing more than glorified cell phone speakers that change only 2dB from 15-50 on the volume setting. When I plug my Apple TV into 90% of projectors at meetings, I'm impressed that they too do not have an analog audio output. It's like my old 100 watts of neighbor jarring jams of joy has been throttled, forcing me into a 5-10 watt landlord approved ecosystem. Signed, Nostalgic Xennial

Hopefully Apple is thinking ahead and the next ATV will not only be HDR10 capable, but also Dolby Vision HDR capable. DV HDR blows HDR10 out of the water and if you have a tv that can do DV HDR, you already know that. It's probably too much to ask that the new ATV will also be HLG HDR capable.
Apple version of thinking ahead is for you to buy another box

It was recorded on film, so they can remaster any film movie to 4k. Even really old stuff

The really old stuff should be easy to remaster at 4K. More recent movies were often transferred to digital for editing and adding digital effects. This was often done at 1080p because of the tools available, and the time to render effects. It would be a massive effort to create a true 4K version of these, and may only happen for the biggest sales opportunities. A significant number of UHD Blu-Rays are upscaled. Reviews often say they do look better than Blu-Ray, perhaps the improved bitrate makes as much difference as anything.

Many of us here are obviously passionate about technologies like 4K, HDR, surround sound, etc.

Yet most of today's youth are happy to watch video on their mobile devices.

What will they be passionate about in the future?

We've already seen music devolve into a high-compressed medium... yet is considered "good enough" by the vast majority of people.

Definitely looking forward to this. With more and more 4K stuff showing up out there (including several of Netflix's marquis titles, etc), this will be a hugely welcome addition in my household.

Apple is like the last company on earth to support 4k. I thought they would be among the first.

4K TV & 4K Bly-Ray player owner, 4K Netflix and Amazon prime subscriber here.

Despite all the 4K this 4K that from everyone, there is still a surprisingly small selection of decent 4K content out there. And if you also consider a lot of material marketed as 4K is no more than a 2K upscale, the selection shrinks even more.

Point is Apple aren’t late to the party. In fact I think they will be the catalyst.

What are you talking about? Even once Apple releases a 4K Apple TV, and upgrades the iTunes Store to 4K content -- how much 4K content will be available on Apple TV? Netflix, for an added fee that no one will pay. No other popular video service offers anything.

The real world of 4K is that it is mostly no where.

Everyone I know that has an AppleTV also has a Netflix subscription. Netflix has a fair amount of 4K content as is adding more all the time. Amazon Prime also has 4K and there is more and more 4K content showing up on YouTube.

The steps I have to go through to watch e.g. House of Cards in 4K on my 60" OLED 4K tv kind of sucks right now. Once AppleTV comes out with a 4K model, my life gets much simpler.

Outside of 50-100 inch screens and computer screens, 4k content is pointless. I mean from the view point of data required to adequately display uncompressed 4k is so large and gpu needs so high that these 4k files are NO WHERE NEAR what 4k quality should be. The same way 1080p blu ray is amazing compared to streamed versions.

I suspect that 4k is never going to demonstrate the quality it's capable of because of the lack of high capacity physical media format. Streaming 4k is cool and all but it's barely worth it for the compression artefacts vs same bitrate 1080p.

Will be dead on arrival if they cannot provide us with a subscription model. Purchasing movies individually off iTunes is a real pain in the ass, even more so with Netflix & Co. striving.
No problem - the monthly subscription to all the first run just-finished-in-the-theaters movies will be $499.95 per month. You're up for that, right?

If you just mean that you want a selection of movies at a subscription price, no problem, Netflix has you covered already. If you want Apple to provide you with every Hollywood blockbuster for a nickel a piece, because it's inconvenient to you to pay what Hollywood wants to charge, well, I don't think that's going to work out well for you.

FWIW, I buy them on my phone with ApplePay/TouchID, decline the offer to download it now, then watch it on my ATV4. It's really quite easy.
