Why any large company is still headquartered in California is beyond me. They are just throwing their money away in taxes and cost of living. It’s a bit late, however, considering that they just rebuilt an entire campus.

It's where a lot of people *want* to live, for a variety of reasons. Life goes on, Apple will continue to do very well.

America in the past has found ways to control housing and the prices without directly implementing laws, e.g building ghettos/project housing, highways that ro split black and white communities etc, but people still say “America is free, don’t control the rent!”

Its BS and the states and councils need to do more to help employees especially starting with high speed rail links.

Oracle, Facebook, and Amazon all announced plans to come to Nashville. This is exactly why I’m closing on a home in three weeks. Scary what these salaries will do to the average worker in any town big tech is in.

It was, for a long time. But the pandemic has changed the world; people appreciate life and the things they hold dear more. I think that, when you take into consideration how much we take for granted — home, job, loved ones — people readjusted their perspective of self-worth.

I suspect a lot of Apple employees also readjusted their home address in 2020, having bought into the “people can work from home forever” narrative that took hold last year. Now they don’t want to move back.

How do you "control" housing prices?
Perhaps issue a "Directive 10-289" ??
I'm not sure about Cupertino specifically, but San Francisco could rollback their zoning restrictions (on buildings over 3 stories tall) which on it's own could drastically increase the city's housing while simultaneously lowering rent prices (because of the whole supply & demand thing).

I wouldn’t be so sure about the “lowering rent prices.” I bet San Francisco high rise apartments and condos would be in huge demand by people other than tech employees.

Apple’s inflated salaries are what helped drive the ridiculous cost of living and micro inflation in the Bay Area. Too much money fighting over too few goods. Now they’re looking to ruin other local economies where cost of living is low. And all these governors are too eager to offer them massive tax breaks so when they’re up for re-election they can say they “created jobs.”

The would be ideal if my CA company would consider this. I'd like it, my family would like it, my aging parents would like it, and I wouldn't always be thinking of when to quit a job I like simply to move to a lower cost location in the US (while taking the COL reduction). Being two timezones away can cause issues with your group, but if it were permitted to have more location options, I'd work harder to find a solution and make it work. It has been interesting that I was closer to my coworkers when I was there, but since 2020 the focus turned to family and self happiness.

Suggestions for the "government" to step in and "fix" the cost of living in Silicon Valley is really a hoot. What could go wrong? Nixon imposed a wage and price freeze on the country. It worked out not so much.

But if we can just force people and companies to do the right thing it will be the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal. Of course it ain't going to happen.

The reality is Apple like all companies will adjust its most expensive cost (people) in its own interest. There will be "right-sizing", relocations, many H1B visas, etc. as the iPhone glory days wane. Even though Joe whispered "pay them more", that won't happen either.

Oh, I've worked all over the world and lived in many places as an engineer. CA is not the end all/be all for beauty. At least when I lived in The Hague, they painted "In de Goot" on their sidewalks. That was a message for dog poop in the 70's. Maybe CA could use it for people poop today.

Will be interesting to see what the long term affects of the Bay Area housing price comes to. My guess if more companies push for this, you will see a substantial drop in housing prices…simple supply/demand at work

People migrate in for tech jobs, but the tech jobs originated from the bolus of knowledge and creativity fostered by the area's universities - that + climate/lifestyle are why people stay in the area.

Nope that is foreign parties that invest in property here, be it from Japan, Korea, China, India and parts of Europe. It's a safe investment if you got the money and they do. It's why home prices have risen so much the last 20 years. Not like you can blame just the tech companies for the cost of living. The mild weather, redwoods, with the ocean close by makes for a nice place to live and work. ;)

I thought being able to work in Apple would always be the biggest attraction to any talented individual, and they’d bend in order to work for Apple.
Apple is just one company of many. From a technical perspective, they are actually rarely on the leading edge of the development (which is the reason they buy a dozen of small companies or so per month). Those who want to do be involved in advanced development can find better opportunities elsewhere.

States and councils are not going to provide low cost housing to Apple workers earning $100K+ annually. They are busy helping folks with lower incomes (teachers, firefighters, retail workers etc.)

That too. That was once a luxury. Now it’s the norm.

And the reason "foreign parties" invest in real estate over there is because they have Apple employees to pay exorbitant rent.

I cant imagine why anyone would want to work for Apple. I would rather have less money and piece of mind then work for that tyrannical place.
Just really awful places to work eh?

And those are just the large examples, there are many more buildings used by Apple located in multiple cites around the Bay Area. Please notice all the trees in the area too.

Timmy wanted a spaceship to impress his new Hollywood friends

Companies need an identity and culture. The new campus is overdue if you consider Apple's way of doing things prior to the pandemic. Infinite loop and their hundreds of other leased buildings in Cupertino were bursting at the seams for over a decade before the new campus opened. it seemed like a great idea for 2015 apple for sure. 2025 apple maybe not but the space ship doesn't hold every Apple corporate employee so I think they'll still have it full just maybe not full of the people they expected.

Let’s say Apple increases it pay to it’s employees to an average of $1 million. The housing prices will increase to $20 million. If in the new location, it pays $100,000, the housing prices there will raise to $2 million. It does not matter how much is paid. Housing prices is a function of supply vs demand and how much the best and savvy can afford. If Apple relocates to another location, it will be the same case there as well. And unfortunately, the real estate bubble at the new location will cause lot of pain to local residents.

The better solution to this is for Apple to build its own housing somewhere near Cupertino, only to be rented to tech employees, at a lower cost. If rents are pulled down, real estate prices will go down. Apple is large enough to control local housing prices in a legal way without government intervention.

I am surprised there is no state wide limitation or cap on how much you can charge per m2 for rent. That would solve the problem a little
The "problem" is not enough houses for the demand. If you limit rent, it will do two things: (1) increase demand (because you have made housing cheaper), and (2) discourage investors from building new housing stock in California (developers can build the same building in another state, and make more money). As a result of increased demand and less construction, the shortage will become worse.

Over the past 20 years, the population of California has increased by 5,000,000. The solution is to build more houses.

It's not the buildings or park, it's the actual working environment where superiors are breathing down necks, push people over their limit and enormous pressure is applied, which in turn results in psychological issues and depression. Look at the top performing students in Stanford, Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, etc. Why do you think people have so many psychological issues there? Same at Apple, that's also why people usually don't stay there. Apple is an excellent entry point to the industry after graduation. People work there for a while and then go somewhere else. The few that stay are usually climbing up the ladder and stay for the for money. It's a toxic place to work at.

And no, that's not for 100% everyone, but for most that contribute to the Apple ecosystem. I'm pretty sure the janitors and gardeners taking care of the campus are perfectly happy with what they're doing.

Remember this
Apple Will Pay Contracted Janitors And Bus Drivers During Shutdown
But after questioning from The Wall Street Journal, Kristin Huguet, spokesperson for Apple, said the company was working to ensure that all of its employees were paid during the crisis.
Yes even their contractors were taken care of, not just employees.
