I am pretty sure the iPhone 4G has a screen resolution higher than the current iPhone's 320x480.

I tried to get text looking as sharp as the text from the Vietnamese YouTube video and on a 320x480 canvas I couldn't do it.

The rumors suggest that the next iPhone will have a 640x960 resolution.

It's hard to tell because the video is applying its own blur.
But when I look at the captical A's from the video, I think I can see the same stepping that is on the A's on the 320x480 screen shot.

The stepping wouldn't look the same on a 640x960 (in fact, it wouldn't be visible at all on the video).

The proof is in the pudding

Reasons why this version of the iphone is newer than the one that was published in Gizmodo:

1. The Screws have now been removed from the bottom of the case and can now be found when you remove the sim card tray. There are a few reasons for this. The main reason is so that the phone looks more like it's big brother...the Ipad. The other reasons have to do with aesthetics as well. One of the reasons that Apple is trying to hide the screws and make the pin connector more hidden (hard to explain...hidden is not the right word) than the previous models is because of dust/lint. Because people put their phones in their pocket, quite a bit of dust/lint gets stuck in the nook and crannies of the phone. Thus Apple is trying to find ways to hide the screws which is evident with this version and the new Ipad. With the new Ipad, the pin connector is slightly narrower and a little more hidden (hard to explain...hidden is not the right word). This can also be seen in this version of the iphone.

2. Another reason this is a newer version is because of the presence of the 16 GB stamp on the back of the phone. The Gizmodo phone, only had the XXGB stamp.

3. Also, not many people probably noticed this one, but Apple has added a small metallic ring to the rim of the camera. This ring is actually behind the glass, unlike the current 3GS. The reason for this was because Jonathan Ive thought the previous prototype looked a little off balance with the shiny flash, and aluminum sides. What's important is that the ring is internal now...so it's real easy to wipe dust off unlike the current model.

Also, several people keep asking why you can't restore this phone to firmware 4.0. They will be able to once the firmware is released to support the hardware. Essentially, it could be done right now, but you would have rewrite quite a bit of code.

Why would you want to carry 4 inch screen sized phone, which means total length of over 5 inches in your pocket?

The EVO has a 4.3" screen. The device is 4.8" long.

The EVO altogether is only about a quarter inch longer and wider than the iPhone. It's big, but the fact that the screen takes up most of the space, gives the illusion that it's even bigger.

The screen does change. In the beginning it says 'Iteration: 0', later on it writes 'Iteration: 2'. People think this app is run when you start the 'BurnIn' software from the hardware testing firmware.

That burnIn software is probably for the assembly line, just before it goes to to firmware load. It was lifted from a factory. It's real, just not complete.

Still wondering where the word "lost" comes from in the title of this thread?

Was this protoype actually reported lost or is the use of that word an editorial decision by MacRumors?

Anyone know the answer?

Finally a Beautiful iPhone

I always felt the first couple generations of iPhones weren't quite up to Apple's industrial design standards. They look better than any other smartPhone, and the 3G is a vast improvement over the launch model, but that isn't saying much.

The shiny, chrome bezel is sort of hideous and I won't miss it. It doesn't seem like Apple customers are typically into bling, so it never made sense to me. We want beautiful objects that we can admire the design of, not shiny things that drug dealers would wear around their necks.

I am so glad this latest design is turning out to be real. I want to buy one and take it home and make sweet love to it while my 3G sits there and watches ( don't worry I won't put it on youtube ).

Compare

Why would you want to carry 4 inch screen sized phone, which means total length of over 5 inches in your pocket?

Take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S with the 4" Samsung Super AMOLED screen (touted as the best screen on the market - though granted you are then talking Android!). It is 2.53" x 4.82" compared to the 3GS at 2.4" x 4.5"; not much of a difference is there? And I'm sure Apple would be able to reduce that size even further with their crafty designers!!

I have said before that I hate this iPhone look. But the more I look at it, and with all the iPhone 3GS comparison photos, the more I grow to like it...

If you assume the text in the image is the same as the small text on an IPhone, like under the icons on the home screen. Then five lines of text is about 75 pixels. If the screen is about 3.5-inch idagonal then the height of the text block relative to the whole screen indicates the entire screen is around 230 dpi. If the text uses more pixels to display the text then on a current iPhone, then the new phone DPI would be higher. I do not know why people who get these phones don't count some pixels, is not really very had to do.

All I have to say is this phone better have a higher res screen or I won't be buying it. The screen is LONG OVERDUE for an overhaul.

Actually the article states that "a Vietnamese businessman had bought it in the U.S.", so I'd say that these things being produced overseas has nothing to do with it.

And about the 'woman finding it', I'm quite sure it's the hand of a male. The rather long nails are quite common in Asia (Vietnam), I believe it shows status; meaning that you earn a living without physical labour.

I thought the long nail was for the cocaine?

I soooooo don't care about all these "leaked" or "lost" iPhones.

Apple will announce the next gen iPhone in June as they always do. They'll tell you exactly what it is, they'll even show it to you!! They'll also let you know how much it will cost too!

So what's really the big deal about these found next gen phones? You can't buy one yet. It will all be released in June. So what's the big deal?

I'm not currently an iPhone owner (although I do plan on getting one of the new iPhones when they're released), but I have used friends' iPhones on occasion, and I'm curious about how the new design will feel in the hand as opposed to the current model. I've always thought that the 3GS feels really nice in the hand, considering that the edges are curved and the phone thickness tapers down toward the edges. The new design, on the other hand, doesn't taper down around the edges (in terms of phone thickness), so I'm curious if it might not be as comfortable to hold as the 3GS model. I guess I'd kind of equate the newer design to holding my iPod 5G which has more of a uniform depth all the way around, in which case I'd say that the iPhone 3GS might have the edge over an iPod 5G.

Guess I'll just have to wait and try it out for myself. Of course, it really doesn't make much of a difference, as I'll be getting one regardless!

dreadful design

why is it so ugly?! WHY?! I mean look at it!! Screw the no-screws!! Circular Buttons à la SonyEricsson's T610, The back like the front...! Yuk!!!

Bonfire of the vanity.

Bonfire is the self destruct software.…and battery drainer.
So this dude bought the prototype from and insider or tester either before or after bonfire was 'lit' by Apple by the user logging on to the network with the phone.
Interesting.

I just picked up an old ipod 30gb and this new iphone reminds me of it.
I like it when everyone says how un-apple this phone is, when in fact the previous iphones have been so un-apple if it wasnt for the logo you wouldnt think they were from the same company!

Perhaps the seams are for the wireless signal to get out/in?

Regardless, I really really love the look of this phone and cannot wait for it to come. Finally the iPhone is a decent piece of hardware. As much as I love my 3GS it really is substandard in areas.
iPhone 4 + OS4 will be a killer combination!

I sure hope that guy is a left handed classical guitar player, or he needs nail clippers more than any kind of phone.

There is a superstition in chinese/vietname that having your pinky nail extend pass the ring finger brings good fortune. and no, i didnt make this up =)

Is there a place other than the one linked from the first post that has all the images? The site crashed my browser.
