What if Apple calls it 4S because they can't fit the A5 in it?

A5 is twice the size of A4 and in the iPhone 4 the internals are already packed to the gills.

I guess this engineering challenge could be one of the reasons for the September delay.

That is a bloody good point! I forgot that the A5 is a considerably larger chip. You may well have something there. Would the next iPhone (whatever it will be called ) only have a faster A4 chip because of this? There was some headroom in the A4 design, up to 1.2ghz IIRC. I'm sure they won't but you never know.

Still, 9to5Mac are convinced that the next phone will have a dual core A5, and they're pretty spot on.

i still think the iphone 5 will come june/july

I'm still trying to figure out what makes people wait for an iPhone 5. What possible advance would make it such a MUST HAVE device? More memory and better processing is a plus, but much of the rest of the phone will do what? It's a phone. Seems close to maxed out with most function due to size.

Mine can. Pretty sure I'm not in the minority either.

Yea every Android phone I have seen does it perfectly smooth. Its just another comment from a jealous Apple fan realizing they have bought an out of date phone.

LTE early 2012 would be fine for me ... end of contract and LTE in Japan will have a bigger service area. Coverage not too broad yet, still under construction ... patiently waiting ...

If they shrink from a 45 nm to 32 nm or possibly <30nm process they might be able to squeeze the A5 in there.

I would speculate that the A6 will be a 30nm or less process and make it more fitting for the iPad 3 and iPhone 5, and possibly an entry level system replacing the Mac book

2011, the year Apple hands Google's Android the lead on a silver platter.

The iPhone 3GS was the first iPhone that gave the competition a year to catch up. Now they're giving them another 18months!? Lazy.

Android made some inroads with the 3GS refresh, then lost it with the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, android will be not able to take advantage of the upcoming "refresh". However, I feel their product going up against the iPhone 5 will exploit the 18 months and put up some interesting products.
The atrix is an concept that could really be the next true universal product, phone to laptop to phone.
The next 24 months should yield some interesting ideas

Apple's 2012 Fiscal Calendar Starts October 2011

Just a thought... Apple's fiscal calendar is on the same schedule as the U.S. federal government with Q4 of 2011 ending September 30 and Q1 of 2012 starting October 1. Technically, releasing the iPhone 5 in 2012 could mean a release as early as this October.

I like your thinking ... XMas with LTE

Do people not understand how numbers work? If this next iPhone is indeed named the 4S, the phone that comes out in 2012 will not be called the iPhone 5. How would that make ANY sense to name the 6th revision of the phone the #5?

There are two options here: iPhone, 3G, 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 6 OR keep the normal number system iPhone (1), 3G (2), 3GS (3), iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6.

Another possibility is to call it the iPhone 4G or iPhone 4LTE, if it moves to support LTE (and "real" 4G). We've seen apple name based off underlying technology before, without caring for version numbers.

An iPhone 4, then iPhone 4S, then iPhone4G would be confusing, and I doubt they'd stay with 4 for so long, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.

LTE doesn't excite me. And paying MORE money for it certainly doesn't appeal to me... how about 3g service that actually works as advertised AT&T?

+1. I don't understand how more people aren't getting this.
