But that's precisely what I'm saying - even in dim or pitch dark rooms, the light from the display alone is sufficient enough to see the keyboard if you need to. At least for me it is.
It depends on the display size, but there's a reason why every single Apple laptop has had a backlight.

It's unquestionably better to have than to not.

some people do like to use computers in dim rooms for whatever reason....

if they happen to be not so good at typing, then they need backlit keyboards to see what they are typing.

I have never needed to look at my keyboard. I've been the Das Keyboard with blank keys for the last several years. (except the function keys) It's kind of expensive, but not really when compared to Apple keyboards... I originally bought it because I tried one and I loved how the keys felt. It always annoys my friends who come over and they want to use my computer for something.. then I have to take out a cheap no-name wireless keyboard so they can use it.

That's a dope-looking keyboard.

Sadly I'm neither a badass typist nor a gaming enthusiast.

No. And at this point in my life, I don't need to and never will.

I wish I'd taken that typing class in high school (35 years ago), but I'm fast enough now looking at the keyboard occasionally to make a living in IT.
Being a good typist isn't about speed. It's about efficiency and it's just plain crazy to not want to learn how to type especially with so much social media and forums today. You can easily install a free typing program and learn in a month's time. Backlit keys are helpful even for touch typists because of the function keys and the numbers up top. Whatever floats your boat but the infamous head bobbing isn't true typing. That's on the line of periodically looking down to shift the gears in your manual clutch. Proper driving is keeping your eyes on the road at all times and proper typing is keeping your eyes on the screen just the same.

How does one replace a keyboard with the same color as the iMac they purchased. I'd assume this will be possible on a one-off basis through Apple Support.

I bought it, will save me irritation in the long run from flipping my macbook open to use touch id since the overwhelming majority of my time on the mac is spent on the desk with external display.

I guess selling my magic keyboard 2 can fetch around $50.

Did you get the one with the numeric keypad? If so, for $20 more you can get an Apple Watch Series 3 which would let you unlock your Mac without having to reach for Touch ID.

I got the non-numeric (which I may change my mind on), I didnt even know that. I'd consider the watch But I wouldn't wear the Apple watch while working. How does the watch unlock work, is it as long as you're wearing it or is it the watch face ID? Im not familiar with that function.

I fail to see why the non Touch ID accessories are new, perhaps they haven't updated the pictures for them yet but aren't they the same? I remember the designs being more curved on the new ones but I don't really see the difference... Maybe it's there so I hope someone can enlighten me on this, just confused.

Yeah, but the separate numeric keypad on the Apple Watch Series 3 is a little tiny for most adult fingers.

I’m also using mx keys + mx master for a year now and it’s an incredible combo. I’m switching between 3 computers (1 mbp + 2 windows laptops) and works flawlessly

Does anyone know if the new Magic Keyboard would work on a desktop Windows 10 PC if I swapped out the lightning cable to a Lighting --> USB3 cable?

EDIT:
On another note I see a lot of people complaining about no backlight? For me I would rather NOT have backlight, to me it is tacky and not needed, I can touch type and don't need to look at my keyboard so I see no functional advantage to using it. Those RGB backlight keyboards make me cringe

You are minority. But a cool one.

Well, 13" is the smallest they make now and I can see the keyboard just fine without using the keyboard backlight on my MBA 🤷‍♂️ I actually find the backlight on the keys distracting.

But using your logic, you could argue, "There's a reason why every single Apple external keyboard doesn't have a backlight. It's unquestionably better not to have it." So I don't think that's the logic you want to employ here ("all X have/don't have Y, therefore it's unquestionably better to have/not have Y").

Sure, but what about the various other in-system stuff that looks for touchID?

(Series6 owner here, watch unlocks M1 MBP just fine, still asks for touchID for various things like 1Password, ApplePay, etc.)

so it just got delivered by DHL Express in The Netherlands, really quick, a day early even, apple's website yesterday listed a delivery date of the 5th of August (at the earliest):

but developers will need to update their software to see it, as I can't unlock 1Pw with it when the MacBook is also closed / in clamshell mode:

other then that, Touch ID works how you would expect it.

You can already unlock those other things with an Apple Watch.

From the linked support page:
You can also use your Apple Watch to approve other requests to enter your administrator password. This works anywhere you need to type your Mac password, such as when viewing passwords in Safari preferences, unlocking a locked note, approving an app installation, or unlocking settings in System Preferences.

Pay with Apple Watch on Mac
Use your Apple Watch to unlock 1Password on your Mac

it is a wireless keyboard, so the cable is only used for charging, typically only once or twice month for half an hour or so.

Well good for you. Your eyes are better than mine.

You can always turn the backlight off.

I didn't connect the two statements directly, but I can see how it came across that way.

My point is that it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.

I like not having to rely on ambient lighting to see the keys. The backlight makes key visibility a complete non-issue for everyone.

But hey, to each their own.
