Apple Maps is certainly much better than it was in iOS 6 but it still has a long way to go.

I've lost track the amount of long since closed places that weren't there before but now randomly appear.

And for some unknown reason (yesterday) I searched for Cromer Road, Norwich-and the map loaded Stoke-on-Trent.

My biggest complaint with Apple Maps is how old the satellite data is around me. It is at least 40 months old, since that is when I put in a pool. A whole freeway has been completed since and it still shows old sattelite photos. Meanwhile Google has been regularly updated.

I find that Apple maps has gotten worse or no better over time. I've found myself using google more and more.

Most times that I search for something with Apple maps, it either doesn't find it at all or finds some inexplicable match hundreds or thousands of miles away. They really need to weight local results above those far away.

The only time I use Apple Maps is when I ask Siri something like 'How long would it take to drive to Worksop?'. Then not by choice, Apple Maps opens. And more annoyingly, it doesn't just tell me how long it'll take, it starts giving me directions. Not what I asked for.

Transit instructions aren't given in my city by Google maps, unfortunately, and I take public transit far more often than drive, so I use apple maps. Not that apple maps gives transit either, mind you, but after I ask for the route it lets me send the request to a third party app that can do it. Annoying, but the best option I've got. Google maps is still better for searching businesses, though.

Apple Maps launched in 2012
Google Maps launched in 2005

3yrs vs. 10yrs, I'd say Apple is coming along pretty well with the Maps.

Yes it seem to be that way. I have never encountered any issues with Apple Maps and enjoy the experience on mobile. Google Maps is my choice on desktop still.

It makes a logical assumption that you will want to go there. If they make it the way you want someone else will be unhappy.

Apple Maps works great for me, if all I want to do is see my current location on a map. If I am trying to find nearby businesses or points of interest, forget it. It seems about average for finding routes, if it can find my destination. The search results are often off by 100s of miles or completely wrong, even when I know that what I am looking for is nearby.

It seems to me that Apple semantic search is bad everywhere; Finder, Apple website, Maps, etc. So maybe it is not Map's fault. Its really bad as a developer that I cannot use search in Xcode to find documentation, I have to go to Google and low and behold it brings up Apple's documentation first and exactly what I am looking for. If I use Apple's web site search it does ok, but still misses all the time.

i'm sure this has nothing to do with IOS9 basically linking directly to Apple Maps in several areas. allow users to change the default Maps product and we will see if it is truly a superior product. It's still not accurate where i use it

Is there any reason why I can't see traffic while being routed somewhere? I miss that about GM and Waze, they show traffic while you are driving, not just when you look at an overview of the routes.

I've switched to Apple Maps about 90% of the time. I especially like it in conjunction with my Watch.

I still need to use google maps for particular use cases (can't find a location, want to compare travel times, etc).

the Maps watch integration is great. Simple, but great. I love the little tap on the wrist when i approach a turn or exit.

I've got to say - I normally use Maps, however I do refer to Google maps when there is up coming traffic that I can see. Apple Maps needs this! I want Live traffic and also - AM tried to send me down a one way system the wrong way this morning - it's lucky I knew the road and knew that it was a one way system! But I do like the integration that it has with my calendar and I can build in estimated journey times into my day so I can leave on time etc! Great feature. Can't do that with Google maps.

Google maps can still walk circles around Apple maps when it comes to POI and accurate napping data. With recent updates the traffic data is also infinitely better.

Just because something is used more because it's installed by default doesn't mean anything. Remember Internet Explorer? Let that sink in for a minute.

If they opened up Siri to Google maps and had an extension to third party apps and installed Google Maps by default, the usage data would destroy Apple maps.

I don't use it, the search results are all US based rather than my current location so i end up going to Google Maps which finds the place far quicker and easier. Until they provide better search results for those not in the UK, i'll stick to google maps.

I hate apple maps but I still use it most of the time due to siri integration. If I could change it so siri used google I would

I recall a time when Google maps was in its infancy and Mapquest was the only service anyone used. I recall a lot of people I know getting lost in the wrong side of town because of Google's directions. Over time they expanded and improved. The same will happen here. Sadly, Apple can't have those stumbling blocks, ever. If they launch a service it must be completely fleshed out and error free from the start or its deemed a failure. That's not to say they are not without their mistakes. I think that is much more attributed to them sticking their foot in their mouth than anything.

Apple Watch integration is the only thing that keeps me using Apple Maps. Google Maps just introduced traffic info in Turkey, I wish they had Apple Watch integration :(

I recently used Apple Maps in London while visiting - the transit directions were faultless and really helped get me round the stations! I use Waze for navigating to work but may be moving to Apple maps for everything soon!

No it wouldn't. Those that want directions could ask "Give me driving direction directions to Worksop". Like Google does.

I got totally lost in Montpellier France yesterday. It was dark and the height of rush hour and traffic was crazy.

Apple carplay and Apple maps saved the day. "Hey Siri, navigate me home"

Up came the map and Siri's comforting voice. She got me out of the city and on the autoroute home and when I missed a couple of turns due to my own fault, she quickly re-routed and got me back on the right road.

I can't ask for more.

Yes it would. I just asked Siri "HOW FAR AWAY IS PARIS" and she gave me a number an showed me a map. So maybe by design it will give you directions if you ask HOW LONG.
