It doesn't, I was stating how the last time I used maps it didn't go well.
I also said that its not very good using Apple Maps in Australian heat, because it shuts the phone down with an overheating message. Has that improved any?

No idea, you’ll have to try. I live in the UK, not Australia.

I don’t use Google services precisely because they don’t pay me for the data they take from me. Their services aren’t worth that much and they get a lot more value out of me than I get out of them.
Well taking in consideration the popularity of of google services you are in a minority.
What other free services give you more value for your extremely important data?

Happy to be a minority, although I am very glad to see the conversation has now started in earnest about how valuable personal data is and how it can very easily be abused by these big corporations.

My son uses DuckDuckGo, how do you find its results compared to google's?

Well I still haven't seen a logical argument from you supporting your claim of why you think your random data is so valuable and you should be paid for it handsomely.
It reminds me of the Cover Affairs pilot where they intercepted some random intelligence data they ultimately deem useless and for which they were going to pay a nice sum.

DuckDuckGo is a free service that gives greater value than google.

DuckDuckGo is only a service that tries to cash-in on the idea of privacy. In terms of search accuracy it's inferior to Google Search. And it's just a search engine nothing more, Google is more than that.
Ultimately you are basing you trust, and privacy in the hands of a small company that can't protect them in most cases and you call that greater value than google.

Don't fall for this fake news. Apple doesn't track you. All of this is done on your phone, not by Apple and they never get your data. Please read the article.

I think you could infer what I meant when I said when they track “you”....I realize it is anonymous and there is no way for them to know itt is “you”.

Poor word choice on my part based on the paranoid folks on here.

Apple DOES get “data” from “your” phone as the article states...and they always have if you let them.

I’m not sure of a better way to say that other than the example of traffic data that is always on as a default when you buy an iPhone.

Whether you use Maps or not, if this is left on, the get the data as to how fast your phone (and you) is moving and translate that into up to date traffic info.

I’m sure the same might be true for the probe data discussed in the article. Although, it does infer that you actually have to use Maps for that data to be utilized since the phone will only send data from the “middle” of a route.

I have a heat problem when my phon is mounted on my dash. Its the same regardless of which mapping app i use. Certainly not an issue with just Appke Maps. The fact that you portray it as an Apple fault seems very suspect to me. Add to that the fact that you have admitted your Apple criticism is based on Apple Maps experience from when it first came out... its hard to take you seriously.
How are you using a computer? Early computers were slow and had lots of problems? How are you driving a car? Early cars were very slow, broke down a lot more, got extremely bad gad mileage...
Do you actually suggest Google Maps was perfect right from the start? That once they had their map that no company should ever bother competing? That no ither mapping option had any features that are better than what Google Maps has?

You dont help your argument when you cite an article in which its author admits he uses DDG, and that it had a number of benefits. It even starts out by saying that if you enjoy benefits x, y, z.... move along... and then offers sone critique. Indeed, are you drawing the conclusion that if its not 100% provate/secure... then why bother trying?

My data is worth more than Google thinks it is because I say so. I’m free to ‘sell’ my data for however much I want as it is my asset to sell. Google isn’t prepared to give me enough for it so I don’t do business with them.

Many people are prepared to do business with them because they feel as if they are getting ‘good value’, but I believe that’s because most people don’t realise just how valuable their data is.

The conversation has now started that’ll hopefully make people realise how valuable their data is and demand more for it from these companies.

Whatever. I'm just happy that Apple seems to be increasingly iterating on their products and not having to wait for complete overhauls with a new OS version (ie. recent Apple Music artist pages done server side).

It's amusing that you think that there is another company that would be willing to pay your self established tax for your random data.
Yeah it's not like Google is the standard.

So still no arguments behind your claim that people's data is more valuable than they think.

The conversation has now started that’ll hopefully make people realise how valuable their data is and demand more for it from these companies.

Well generally when you demand more you have to argue the reasons why you think you deserve more. It's like asking for a raise, if you don't have any real arguments your manager will shoot you down in an instant.
I mean I don't see any other company that on a long term it would be willing to pay more for your data than Google. Do you?

I don’t need to argue anything. If google wants my data it has to put more on the table. It’s their loss if they don’t, not mine.

It is an Apple fault, they designed the phone that overheats when used as a navigation device on a dashboard/windscreen.

I never said it was only related to Apple Maps.

As for early computers,
1) Waze was way better than Apple Maps when it came out. (and way better than Google Maps too)
2) I've only had the phone 3.5 years, hardly an old computer.

Great. Do you see these changes using a current iOS 11.4 or iOS 12 beta?

I don’t think it matters...this is just a general improvement in the way Apple routes and shows that they are already implementing improvements across the board.

The only reason the changes mentioned in this thread’s article will require ios12 is probably due to the way the data is collected and MAYBE some new graphic features moving forward.

I have to believe those staying on ios11 will still benefit from the new routing algorithms and map data.

Give me a break...no one has ever claimed the iPhones overheat at a higher rate than other phones. At least not that I have seen.

There are multiple places to mount a phone in a car beside the dash and in direct sunlight. Pick one and move on.

Exactly. If your are going to create problems for yourself, don’t be surprised when you run into problems! It’s like trying to ram a USBA cable into a USBC socket and complaining that it doesn’t fit instead of just buying USBC cables

I do know that my dedicated sat nav has no problems on my dashboard.

I have three places I can mount my phone in my car
1) Windscreen - over heats
2) Dashboard - overheats
3) dash vent - blocks the air to my face.

I live in Australia and all places I mount my phone in my car is in direct sunlight apart from the vents but I like to keep them free to keep me cool.

I have other devices that work on the dash too - hands free device and that doesn't shutdown because of the heat.

The car is also aircon cooled to 24C so the iPhone should work.

Perhaps Apple didn't test it in the Californian heat?

So Apple can't design a navigation device that can work in the Australian/Californian heat that doesn't have external cooling? Even if the car is aircon cooled?

Again, no idea, I live in the UK. My iPhone has never overheated.

Sounds like you should mount it on the dash vent to solve your problem.

They didn't...they designed a phone that does 1,000's of things that is designed to work in 1,000's of environments.

And it will work in yours if you mount to the vent (like I do)....you only have one vent in your car??

Again...give me a break...

It would be nice if Apple Maps would also accept user feedback on current driving conditions similar to Waze. With all the iPhone users out there, it would be great to be able to say something along the lines of, "Hey Siri, report an accident" to get better routes around traffic. Yes, that means fixing Siri too ;)

Are you talking about public release 5 years ago??

We’re talking about what will happen over the next year.

And despite all of the failures they have had with Maps since launch, read the articles...they had to create their own maps app then. And now they have 100’s of millions of users...despite what everyone is saying, if any company can come back from the disastrous launch they had, its Apple.

They have the devices, users, tightly controlled architecture and the tech/people to surpass what even Google has built up over 10 years.
They still can hope to catch up with where Google Maps was five years ago I guess, they certainly have not yet.

Get off your high horse, I have 4 vents, only two of them can mount a phone.
And only one of those can mount the phone in my direction for the screen to face me and be the right size etc.

So at the moment I choose to use a dedicated GPS or the inbuilt one in the cars I drive so that I have the vents free.

But not nice to see that Apple has flaws in its designs...

Just a shame Apple can't design a phone that doesn't overheat.

Sadly phones can/do overheat and have to shut down to protect the internal components. It’s the same way that your computer will turn off if the internal components get too hot.

Please...I could just as easily say that Apple design is perfect and you just need a better car...or better mount...or sorry, you’re SOL...

It’s a phone! It wasn’t designed to sit on your screaming hot dash in direct sunlight. It never will be.

Find an alternative GPS or block the vent. It’s not that complicated.
