This is good news. I prefer the look of Apple Maps over Google (clearer borders etc.) but still default to GM due to accuracy. Even though their navigation screwed up the other day...

Good Apple, I'm glad even though it took you a while to figure this out my god.. even with fanboys praising their bubble is covered, anyone doing moderate travelling could find out it was useless.

Great to see. Google Maps has gotten too busy and I prefer Apple's cleaner interface. I would however love to see them drop Yelp as partner. Every business search directs you to that stupid app. Plus address look ups still create issues. In the past month I've had 3x where Apple Maps pointed to the wrong location.

Soon we will be able to enter the virtual reality world to go to any of the places mapped in our real world using augmented reality.

Apple Maps is yet another thing that Apple ruined.

In London, you can't even see the tube stops easily, you have to zoom in and then slowly search for them.

In the old version, they were significant and really stood out from a distance.

I stopped using Apple maps and starting using the much better designed Google Maps.

Six years. SIX YEARS of abusing customers with junk data, and they think it's a good news story they're having to throw it all out and start again because it's irretrievable?

They still don't have a workable business location gathering strategy either, their Yelp POI is hopeless (especially outside of the US where Yelp is essentially dead).

I’ve seen Apple Maps cars in my little town southwest of Spokane. Was excited to see it.

I only use Apple Maps, and have had few problems with the directions given, even way out here. I use Apple Maps because you can give corrections back to the staff in the app. I don’t think you can do that with Google Maps anymore.

On my desktop/browser, my experience with Google maps seems...different, than with Google on my iPhone. And I can't put my finger on it. Like results aren't always the same? I've been sticking with Apple Maps instead and haven't had any issues. My travel is limited to larger metro cities though.

Apple Maps has never been as competent as Google for me. I've always found more inaccuracies and missing data (such as showing roads going through that don't, showing a road as a straight line when it's full of curves, not showing one-way streets, not showing biking and hiking trails). It definitely has room for improvement.

I tend to believe it. I have run into an apple maps van driving around on three different occasions over the past two weeks. These were all in suburban areas of Kansas City, once in my own neighborhood. Van looked identical to this.
Found two parked in tiny Mayville, ND today.

Because it's not a developer feature? The AR demo was just to showcase some ideas of what the devs (the actual audience for WWDC) could do.
Well they debuted Apple Music at WWDC keynote and that wasn’t a developer feature. I’d be curious to know how many in that auditorium are really interested in those game demos.

Would be nice if we could cache the entire country so we dont lose maps when out of coverage while traveling. I wouldnt mind giving up a few GBs for that

There isn't enough space on your phone for the entire US. One large city could take a GB by itself.

Cool, so in traditional Apple fashion once a product becomes rock solid and reliable they decide to rebuild it from the ground up and introduce many months, or even years, of headache and issues.

No. Most likely they've always wanted to have their own baseman. But something like that takes a long time to produce and they needed to get away from Google pronto. So, they listened Tom Tom's base map temporarily until theirs was usable.

By owning their own basemap, they can update it as quickly and as often as they want to. Instead of taking corrections submitted by users and passing them to Tom Tom.

My guess anyway.
