Do those Apple Maps vans have Lidar? What all is that doing? Just street view pictures? I know I could search, but maybe someone already knows a summary of it all.
*The epitome of laziness

Knowing you could get the answer faster on your own, but still choosing to waste time asking and hoping for an (correct) answer. Sounds like me. Haha.

I really wish they'd open source their map data and work with OpenStreetMap.org on this. Google's accuracy for me plummeted after they stopped allowing users to correct the map data, so I switched to OSM.

If they need months to go from the Bay Area to Northern California, I don't wanna know when they'd cover Australia or Hong Kong or South Africa or Argentina. Years to come.

Or maybe they'll roll out where they're most familiar with at first and once they're confident in that area, the rollout will happen faster.

Good, because the current Maps app is AWFUL. In my city, it still thinks there's a location that, in reality, hasn't existed for over 10 years. It's ridiculous.

Submit feedback. I've done so multiple times and the issues were corrected within about a week and a half.

People have been bitching about Apple Maps and demanding that it gets better. And then finally they invest resources to rebuild/improve it from "the ground up" and then even more people bitch at this announcement.

For me it's just frustration that they tie the ecosystem to a product that isn't very good, when there is a much better product available that doesn't work as smoothly with the OS.

I understand all the reasons why that is so, but it doesn't make it less frustrating. It's the one thing I miss from Android - being able to utter a few words, and have Google find exactly what I'm looking for and immediately pull up accurate directions to that place.

The same attempt on Apple often gives me a place 2 states away (if it understands what I said at all), and then I get mediocre directions on top of that.

Bike lanes and directions? I!ve been patiently waiting for that since the very beginning of Apple Maps as Google Maps already had bike directions in 2012. To me the looks are of Apple Maps are fine, I just need bicycle support!

I think apple maps has great potential. I gave it a go recently and noticed significant improvements, especially its tight integration with the watch. Their focus on accuracy of map data is much needed and will make the app usable in the future.

I think their last hurdle to get me to convert completely would be having accurate traffic data like Waze. Other than that, I'm more than willing to switch to a map app that is privacy conscious.

The perfect version of what you're going to spend 3 years trying to do already exists, Apple.

Implement Google Maps instead and then change Siri/search so that it actually gives you want you want.

If google maps is so awesome, why can’t it properly locate or provide correct directions to my house? It takes you done a side street that is almost a mile away.

This is a good step but only part of the other things Apple needs to do:
  • Keep things regularly updated. They've been driving around mapping for years and years now and are only just now using that data to improve maps? Surely much of that data is out of date by now.
  • Street view is much needed
  • Search needs to be better. I often have to use Google Maps to look up places that sell certain types of things that might not necessarily be in the company name. And sometimes it is in the name and Apple still doesn't find it, or inexplicably whooshes me out to some location a thousand miles away.
  • Something that would be nice to have but not necessary is the 3D view in smaller towns that Google Maps has.

Why keep wasting resources trailing behind after Google Maps/Waze? Just throw in the towel, allow Google Maps/Waze to be set as the default and utilize the resources elsewhere for more critical things like iOS, MacOS, Siri, AI, etc.

It will always be garbage without street view. The current 3d view looks terrible and who's fly over designed for? Spiderman?

Umm...that’s exactly what the vans are doing...and their technology will integrate it seamlessly with flyover. You’ll be able to start 1,000’s of feet up and zoom right down to street level.

I always hate that if I try to do that with Google Maps, it suddenly changes to the street view “image” and I can’t tell if I’m facing the same direction as I was when I was zooming. Will be seamless with Apple thanks to Lidar no matter what “level” you are zoomed to.

Hope it's better, as the current AM still sucks. Just yesterday while using it exited highway onto a complex off/on ramp/cloverleaf situation and AM freaked out--all the roads were highlighted in blue lol. So I just picked one, realized was going the wrong direction, and had to turn around. Thanks, Tim! Thanks, Obama! Thanks, NAFTA and chem trails!

Without crowd sourced input of police, accidents, hazards, etc, this is still a no go. Will continue to use Waze until this is available in Apple Maps. ONLY THEN will I have a look and see if it's worth it using.

Meh! Others offer mapping options for those who don't like Apple Maps. Apple needs to invest more in what only Apple can do—create a better and more diverse line of Macs.

Sorry it doesn't work for you, but I imagine if you removed the Apple loyalists and the Google loyalists for a conversation about maps, Google Maps would dominate. It just appears to be more complete and more accurate for more people. I'm sure there are exceptions, and I suspect you're one.

That's the problem though. I shouldn't have to do this. It should just be correct to begin with. Google Maps has zero issues like that, but Apple Maps has too many to count. I'm not going to waste my time doing Apple's job for them.

I don't get it,

why did Apple bother to create Apple maps in the first place and how they make money out of it?

Why is Google maps is so much more advanced while Apple is just as rich as Google.

I use Apple Maps in the UK in the car - no problems apart from the occasional blip where the GPS cannot pin your location to a street when you are in a maze of streets but that isn't the apps fault.

What I want most personally is CYCLE MAPS. Google has had it for ages!

I agree. I fail to understand why Apple needs to duplicate what Google has already accomplished. I don’t see any benefit to Apple reinventing the wheel here. So far Apple has failed to improve upon what Google has offered for years and it doesn’t sound like this upcoming rebuild will change that. I wish all these companies would just get together and develop/maintain one set of shared mapping data. That would be in the best interest of all users.

I love these articles. It brings out all the ecosystem posturing and anecdotal evidence. A few years ago all you’d hear here was “competition is great, makes everything better” but now it seems to be “why bother, product x is better!”

I’m glad Apple is doing it. It can only make things overall better for everyone.
