By seeing so many "WTH, how can you still use with that many cracks??" kind of phones out there, what would that look like with damages. The resell value won't be as good as the ones with hard grass, I assume?

Sorry, but I have to laugh. The seriousness of critique without consideration to the spirit of a post is sometimes baffling.

You seem awfully defensive.

Nevertheless, I went back and specifically addressed and edited my pithy three-line paragraph for those first-year law students and linguists.
It's pretty hilarious how people keep accusing cmaier of knowing nothing about chip engineering or law…

Defensive? I find some of the responses to my post rather amusing. I thank you for adding a new word to my vocabulary, "cmaier." I had to Google it. I also believe we all need to watch a few reruns of Seinfeld.

I'm really curious how well this well actually sell with consumers. I know I'm just one individual, but I have no interest in a folding phone, I feel they are a gimmick like 3D TV's. But that's just me.

Go get 'em, Apple.

Well, that didn't take long. I did not take time to craft my words with such precision, so I guess you're the first forum sharpshooter —congrats! OK, boys and girls; popular in the sense that most everyone I've spoken with likes the concert and thinks it's cool: no numbers, stats, or the like. This forum, for me, is for enjoyment and to learn. For some, it's a contest of wits.

Not sure why you are so defensive, but it was a serious question - it appears that, so far at least, foldable phones have been quite UNpopular, and they don't seem to have much in the way of marketshare. I was wondering what makes you think otherwise?

Heaven help me if a misspelled word or a grammatical error is discovered.

If you're referring to me, I completed more than the first year of law school. And what is the "critique?" It's a question - there's a factual premise on which your commentary rests, and some of us doubt the factual premise, so we ask questions.

Fair to say you have no interest in folding phones that are currently available. Hard to predict that you will have no interest in a folding phone that does not exist yet. Presumably if Apple releases one, it will be because it actually solves a problem that real people have, and it won't be a "technology demo" like the current folding phones in the marketplace.

7”? We don’t need iphone tablet lol the screen size on phones now days are starting too get Ridiculous

I imagine some will buy it; it won't be me. It's too small, for me, to use as a book reader, and waaay to much for me to be carrying around for the occasional phone call or text. Give me a desktop/laptop and call it good.

These are unsubstantiated rumors and leaves doubt as to their being creditable
2023 is a long way off and with the chip shortage currently on the planet it’s leaves doubt in my mind

The name of this place is "macrumors."

And apple seems to have little problems re: a chip shortage.

rumors have turned into:
  • Apple will release a new product later this year
  • Apple may release a new product next year
  • Apple may release a new product two years from now

Really in 2023? I have no desire whatsoever for this “foldie” . How about Apple focus on what’s coming this year, the rumour mill has completely dried up on that front.

I'm not sure how I screwed up and referenced you as the recipient in my previous post. That was in error, and I apologize. Insomuch that I unwittingly dragged you into this —a challenge welcomes a rebuttal. I was perplexed by how seriously my words invited such scrutiny. I knew I should've included a laughing emoji.

Once I read member responses that questioned my statement's validity, it became evident that I should have been more clear. What I hear and what others hear are opinions and when posted here, are 'rumors.' The very nature of this forum and the name may serve as a reminder. Any notion that I proclaimed foldable phones as officially being popular was unintentional.

I believe handheld phone devices will eventually become obsolete and superseded by wearables. I also think that if Apple does make a foldable phone, some folks contesting their popularity may well become the same folks that sign up for pre-orders. Now, before some of my fellow forum members have a hissy fit, this is called irony. 😬

I’m sure they would implement it well, but I have never understood the appeal of a foldable phone. Just seems to introduce structural weaknesses for benefits I don’t just see. What am I missing?
[shrug] We've said the same thing with things like smart watches. I still have no desire for one (I still wear an old fashioned, "dumb watch"), but I can see why some folks dig them.

Here, it seems to be the best of both worlds... when traveling, you fold it up into a compact volume. Perhaps you can still use part of its screen. When you're not on the move, unfold it to get the full screen. Seems to be one of the holy grails of tech.

I prefer to see Apple sell a A14 based Mac mini 6th edition running iPadOS that can be a phone also then a less durable 7-Inch Foldable iPhone sometime in the future.

The folding iPhone would go great with their folding iPads that have been around for years. Oddly enough I paid for a flat iPad Pro and months later somehow got the folding model.

Wow. Now that Apple may make a foldable phone. Look how the responses here have changed. Lol.
Went from what a stupid idea to Apple Will rock this.
I think the typical consensus is that a foldable device is not needed by any general population at this point. Will Apple rock it? I believe if they make the choice to enter the space it means that know how to make it mainstream and will probably rock it. So IF Apple finds a way to change this, therein lies the excitement. Meaning having a foldable display in your pocket is a very sci-fi-futuristic type thing and it would be neat if it was actually something useful. But for the most part it appears that everyone is skeptical on how that would happen. It is also easy to assume Apple feels the same way or a product would have already been released.

Based on the trend that success with foldables is going – according to Michael Fisher – manufacturers would be better focusing their attention on traditional "flip" phones (eg. Razor or Galaxy Flip) rather than the bigger foldables which remain difficult to carry in pockets – a far bigger problem atm.
