In all honesty I upgraded from the 11 pro to the 14 pro last feb.
I originally was waiting for the 15 because of the USB C, but in hind sight I question myself, why?

I wanted all my devices to use the same charger, but with MagSafe being a way better charging solution for my use case.
All my data transfers goes either by airdrop or by internet. More than fast enough for me.

don't really care about the lightningport or the USB C port.

Now hope the ports will vanish in the coming years. Even on my iPad.
this is a form of Stockholm syndrome in my opinion 😁
No ports? For what benefit? More water resistance?
Whats a more likely scenario:
a) people charge their phones via cable and move files to a computer every day around the world - or
b) millions of people desperately waiting to dive even deeper with their iPhone in hand? 🤣
😂

it will be absolutely amazing if apple sells the new iPhone without a cable, please Apple do that, I want to see who in the world will still buy an iPhone and who won't. I just can believe where we are getting, an iPhone with it's basic accessories is going to reach 2000 $ this year or maybe the next one, just think about it, 2000 $ (2500 € in the EU) for an iPhone, this is madness.

Spot-on assessment. And for most people WiFi 6 (and likely 6E for one of the upcoming iPhone 15 models) works great for data transfer.

The fact that many reflexively choose to go the "Apple is ripping us off route" speaks volumes.

Apparently most here want Apple to include an expensive high-rate USB-C cable with every phone, and pass that cost onto users (and then whine about a price increase). The majority of which will have absolutely no need for it.
A USB 3 speed capable port and cable worth under a dollar would have been nice on a 800$+ device with a 100%+ markup in 2023, don't you agree?

There’s nothing in the article that implies the cables will be proprietary. But different cables support different wattages and different transfer speeds. You need to pick the right cable to fit the intended application. There isn’t just a single type of USB-C cable.
That's just the point. There should be a single type of USB-C Cable that does it all.

so they basically get forced to switch to USB C for environmental reasons of reducing the amount of boxes, cables, chargers in the world. Instead they use it as an opportunity to up charge, AND release double the products. I mean I love apple, but man do I hate apple. if only I didnt love apple.

I agree, it would have been much more convenient. The problem is that Thunderbolt cables are very expensive to produce. If you want a cable that's longer than half a meter, you need active circuitry with Intel retiming chips and, in many cases, even optical circuitry to retransmit data at 20 ghz per data transmission line.

It's not just a simple cable. These sorts of cables are very complex to manufacture and have about 20 individually shielded wires within them, multiple chips, and a lot of active circuitry to support such ludicrously high clock speeds for data transmission. They aren't cheap to produce.

That's why apple avoided USB-C on the phone. It's not apple's fault that this standard is a mess.
Now people like you will complain and hate apple, although no manufacturer puts a very expensive TB4 cable in the box.

Personally, I'm kinda glad they're moving to USB-C, means I can share my chargers between more devices. But the mess in this thread is...

I think it's a product of most people not necessarily being aware of just how complex the USB-C standard is. It is NOT cheap to manufacture thunderbolt cables. Very few manufacturers are going to package one on the box, and even devices that do package one (eGPU enclosures, for example), usually just package a 0.5 meter one that can be made passively. The longer ones are much more expensive.

This thread became inflammatory very quickly, I think widespread misunderstanding is to blame. The blame isn't on Apple for this one, it's on the USB-C standard for being a mess.

Apple really said “Your move EU” regarding this usb-c mess they intentionally made.

I will continue to use my MagSafe charger as the primary way of charging my device. To heck with all this.

I just said I cant hate apple... nah I mean thats also a fair side of it. but I do agree with some that a standard charging solution is needed.

Well, strictly speaking there is one, just get a 80Gbps 240W one:

But if you don’t need those features, you can save significant money by getting a less capable one.

All this kerfuffle over cables and transfer speed. Doesn't Wifi 6 already support high-bandwidth transfers? Maximum upper limit of 9.6GB per second. So that cat video you just shot would take less than 1 second to transfer. 🤣

Yeahhh!!!.. Can't wait to buy $129 cable....

View attachment 2250502

The only people who need something like this are videographers pulling many GB of footage off their phones. And in that world, honestly a $130 cable you only need to buy once is going to pale in comparison to what you spend on renting lights or whatever.

Honestly, the number of people who cherry pick some piece of obviously pro gear and freak out about how much it costs...

Surely the WHOLE POINT of implementing USB-C is to NOT need proprietry cables any more? Why can't we use a high quality third party USB-C cable to transfer data at reasonable speeds? I imagine the EU, who pushed for USB-C in the first place, will see this as yet more gatekeeping

It was about not needing proprietary "connectors". The cable between the connectors is still up for competitive advantage.

And this is why USB-C is so confusing.

With Lightning, you get that cable and plug it in. It does its thing. With USB-C, you have to check if it's USB 3.x, Thunderbolt, and do your devices support that.

I can see this maybe being helpful for someone doing video recording or taking lots of pics with their iPhone. That's what Apple's marketing team is pushing for. But how many are going to buy this thinking it'll transfer faster and realize they have a non-Pro iPhone or their Mac doesn't even have Thunderbolt.

I remember watching a YouTube video on USB-C headphones and how you have to match the phone's digital or analog output. So confusing.

But I've been wanting everything USB-C for years now. I'd rather just have one type of cable to deal with than carry around multiple ones.

That’s not how it works, see for example this article:

And a USB-C cable is much cheaper than buying a new Wifi 6 router. Moreover, if you want high transfer speeds between say your MacBook and your iPhone other than in your home near your router, you might still be out of luck.

The alternative is higher prices for cables (well, Apple prices), new connectors and cables for each new USB version, and/or different ports for charging vs. data transfer, or else ongoing stagnation like with lightning.
