personally, i reckon no new powerbooks, no new newton, just the phone and an iTunes update.

nothing to get excited about (even tho we love it), especially as motorolla phones are RANK!! maybe its cos they supplied the old chips apple thinks they owe em one. or cos nokia are up their own arse and sony already have the walkman phone

Well, since the Mac mini came out only a few weeks/months after I wrote about how Apple shouldn't even bundle a keyboard and mouse to lower the cost of a headless computer, I'll let you in about a secret:

I bought a Palm Zire 72s a week ago. I then returned it because it sucked (especially the sync part... what kinda crap was that!).

Which means that yes, Apple will announce the iPDA in about 20 minutes. 😉
 
My guess

The only physical product will be the Motorola phone. What'll be announced however will be more than that. The notion that you can be anywhere, want to listen to a particular track, and use your phone to buy it from the iTunes Music Store. Assuming they're tapping into Cingular's 3Gish EDGE network, it'll probably be possible to play it as you're downloading it as it'll download faster than the 128kbps of a normal AAC track.

That's it. It's simple to explain really, the "revolutionary" part is more of the adhoc nature of the service. Right now you have to do everything via your computer. Not so with this phone coupled with this service.

That's what all the signs are pointing at, but I think many MR readers are focussing too much on the phone and not the service.

Sorry but that's way to underwhelming for even Apple to try and call it revolutionary as their philosophy for what "revolutionary" is, is usually much different. But it's still probably just the phone and not real impressive at best. I think they might hint at something else and that will be the big item.

I don't know - I hate the itunes phone and swap my cat for ANYTHING else to be released today - but I still think the live streaming while buying is kind of revolutionary. Imagine walking around and thinking "oh I want that song, you know the one with the words", and downloading it RIGHT THEN. Kind of cool.
 
are u allowed to sit there with ur laptop on while steve does his speech? if so cant the person whos there go into a chat room with the audio mic so we can hear it? or somehow stream it to the web? or would they get majorly kicked out

Maybe cool but definitely not massive. It's not as if they just invented wireless communications today with the phone annoucement so it's not really a big deal when you can already watch tv on your phone.

the Apple Store shows a promo for free shipping on iPod accessories through Sept. 24. Hmm.. clearing out accessories in anticipation of a whole new crop?
