I Agree

Ever notice that the burgers at dairy queen NEVER look the same in real life as they do on TV?

No company is going to show its flaws in advertising that they spend millions on.

I wonder what they would say if I returned my burger for imperfection...

We should all be happy apple will even replace the warped ones on ocassion.

I have had my MBP now for 2 weeks and didn't even notice it until it was pointed out to me. Do I realy care that there is a small gap when it's shut (meaning it's in my neprene case where I CANT see it), not really. It has been a fantastic computer and works splendidly. I'm happy to see nitpicks over cosmetics than trying to figure out serious hardware/driver/OS issues. Sure, it has a gap, I'm too busy computing than to worry about a gap when it's shut. Just my 2 cents.

well, that gap can bring more dust and lint into your keyboard/screen, or if you put it in your backpack with some papers and other objects they could damage your screen. yes it did happend to some poeple

I love this post :D

if you purchase it just to look at it, then maybe thats a problem

perhaps purchase this?

i looks like crap. :p

If my burger cost me $2000, I would start hitting things if it ain't like the picture. My 3 years old Asus w3v, which is now dead, still looks like the ones in the pictures.

This didn't bother me until this thread. Thanks people!

Anyways, I think I know how's it's caused. That's right, caused.

When you open and close the lid, do you only use on side to do it or the middle of the casing about the screen?

And for 2k, it shouldn't bend like that. IMHO.

its like that right out of the box buddy, i also went to apple and tried bending the screen really hards but it still warped

I have two MBP 2.2 SR, and they both have small, uneven gaps when their lids are closed. It was like this when they were new. This small defect is to be expected considering the thin aluminum, and you can easily bend the lid corners in either direction should you want to.

Apple products are pretty slick, but you can't really compare them to high-end Sony gear. The premium you pay is not for superior engineering and manufacturing, it is for the Apple brand and OSX.

so how do you explain the mba? non of them have the gap problem ans they are alot thinner then the mbp's screen
i think thats why apple is now changing the mbp's case to look more like the air

Are you aware of the warped MBA problem? Search the forums, it's even worse: they won't sit flush on a flat surface.

This problem has to do with having uneven tension in the hinges. My PowerBook was horribly warped when closed but when I upgraded the hard drive I adjusted the hinge tension so now it's perfectly even.

True, for those without protective cases.

Good thing mine is shut only when it's in my neoprene case.

For the record, my gap looks about the same as yours (it's kind of a bummer, but only a small one); the MBP is just gap short of perfection then.

In a real world use, It doesnt matter, My MBP was perfect on arrival, after 3 years of use, it is warped, the case is not perfectly fitted (top case and bottom) and is normal, aluminium is not rock solid, I carry my laptop on my back, all the days, obviusly It will get warped.

Just my 2 cents.

That MBP you exchanged was perfect, just bend little bit your lid, and ok.

This is a cosmetic issue and doesn't effect the performance!

You're kidding right? With that argumentation, rattling batteries, creaking palm rest, and even huge dents is "no problem".

If it bothers you so much leave the laptop open as I do 24/7 - mine is only closed when I put it into my laptop bag, therefore I never notice the issue and all is good.
Again: You cannot be serious!? Leave a laptop open, except when you need to drag it from place to place?
Some people seems to want to have it shoved up their rear from huge corporations.

One should think that pro fitters with tools that can tell how much torque is put on any given screw should be able to adjust it properly.
But perhaps Macs should come with a screwdriver set and a "fix-me" manual?

My Mbp looks fine

thanks for backing me up, i too cant believe these people

Mine looks like Apple's.

Alrighty... I have an original "ordered the day of announcement" first-generation MacBook Pro. Arrived February 24, 2006.

It has been dropped three times. Stepped on while closed once (by a two year old.) It has been slid under the couch and had its lid gouged by a nail poking down.

It runs a distributed computing app maxing out the processors any time I'm not traveling with it. (And with my current job, that means it's that way most of the time. It has been sitting plugged in, running the processors at 100% 24/7 for over two weeks straight now.)

Early on, it had a sleep issue where it wouldn't go to sleep properly all the time, and would sometimes instead sit in my laptop bag "cooking" itself. A few times, I didn't notice until HOURS later, and when I took it out of the bag, it was so hot, I felt it was going to burn me.

I'm not gentle with it. I tend to slam the lid. I tend to toss it on the couch, bed, or car seat. I hold it by horizontally one hand on one edge, so that the weight of it is causing quite a bit of torque.

In short, about as (ab-)used as it could possibly be.

Yet even now, it has ZERO lid warping. When I close the lid, it looks exactly like the Apple pictures. If I knew where my old Vernier caliper from college was, I'd measure it, but I'm pretty sure it's within 0.5mm the entire width.

And if you want to see, here you go, it's a full-resolution file, so feel free to zoom in and count the number of pixels of gap at each end, if you really want to knock yourself out.

Well, 100,000,000 Zimbabwean dollars is $9.30 US.

Oops. Now it's only $4.65. :D

Actually, it's *WAAAAAAY* worse than that. The "official" exchange rate may be "low" (it's presently 18,681,527,512 Zim dollars to the US dollar, or 18,000 times your quote,) but in reality, inflation is signifigantly beyond what the Zim government is willing to acknowledge. Some sources have the current exchange rate at 102,351,000,000 Zim dollars per USD. Yup, one hundred BILLION to one.

And that was three days ago. Three days before that, it was fifty billion to one. So by now, it could be two hundred billion to one. To buy a Tata Nano (the cheapest car in the world at the moment,) would cost over four trillion Zim dollars. The Bugatti Veyron (the most expensive car,) is over 3 quadrillion Zim dollars. (Finally! "Quadrillion" has a vaguely real-world use!)

So your original quote, 100,000,000 Zim dollars, is only worth one ten-thousandth of a US cent. (As of July 8th.)

Oh bother,

Never noticed until now but looking at my 15" I too have a gap on the front right hand side but its only a few mm and nothing like the OP's.

The only reason I wont personaly do anything about it is that it has a good acceptable screen, no excessive heat issues and it doesn't affect it's usage. Now remember I'm one of those guys who have gone through 7 24" iMac's due to a yellow gradient (which Im still battling with) So I know Apple have QC issues and I do hit them up for unacceptable products that no one should tolerate.

Ok I dunno, but I thought the OP specifically said that it was warped out of the box. Thus leading to the conclusion that it is a flaw in the manufacturing process. Plus, if your MBP is closed and put within your bag, all the pressures are pushing inwards - how the heck will that bend the screen outwards as we're seeing in the pictures?

I guess it could be that while the lid is closed, the underside part of the lid is hotter and expands while the topside part remains cold, leading to the edges flaring outwards as seen. But this ain't an engine block so I doubt it'll do that, plus if the lid is closed it should be asleep... But then again it was warped out of the box.

I saw a post earlier, someone comparing a car to the MBP's flaw...I dunno about you but I personally won't leave the dealer's lot if there was a gap in the panel or whatever flaw. Just because it's big doesn't mean it justifies the $20,000 or so price tag. I would want it 10x more perfect than a MBP if anything. Money is money. Think in absolute terms, not relative.
