No matter what Apple does, I will stick with 14.8 on iPad as long as I can. The home screen layout on 15 is ugly. Plus the layout makes no sense to me. Also, on 15, I lose the widgets that I have been using for years on 14 and earlier. If they somehow force it, so be it. Or if they reinstate the home screen layout from 14 in 15, then I will consider it. But until Apple does something like that, I will stick with 14.8 on my iPads. I did upgrade to 15 on my iPhone. But not budging on iPad.
Yes, for that reason I won’t be buying a new iPad anytime soon.

I think there is a history of new releases being buggy at first and then stabilizing a few months in. The plan to keep iOS 14 around for a few more months was probably less an admission that they were releasing an unfinished product and more a show of humility on the part of the software developers indicating that they have no way of finding all the bugs until the software reaches a broad audience
THAT. We don't see enough comments underlining that fixing bugs isn't as easy as we might think, especially if you don't have enough beta testers.

People say that X version of iOS was buggy, but they don't really mention that last version of these releases, which gets overwhelmingly stable in general.

Of course, we all have our own exceptions on our side. We all experience very particular bugs here and there. We don't all have the same experience.

So turns out this weird “delay update” is more of a one-off than any sort of software update policy change, in response to whatever it is happening right now.

Really? It’s been working fine for me.
Welcome to the world of nearly 2 billion iPhone devices and how differently people use them and what’s on them.

**** ends up differently for people in set ups that are different for many reasons lol.

iOS 15 does not run the same for everyone and depending on apps installed, profiles, corrupt data etc it can affect performance overall.

Strange. I wouldn’t allow iOS stop me from purchasing a new iPad. It’s not like iOS renders a new iPad totally broken.
Not strange at all. It means that the benefits of the new hardware would have to outweigh the drawbacks of iOS 15 for me, and I don’t expect that to happen anytime soon.

Would love to know if Apple's CSAM is the main reason.

I actually want to update, mainly for shareplay, but I’ve been holding out for a clear message on where the CSAM efforts are going.

That's the reason I've stuck with iOS 14. Not upgrading until Apple kills this "feature".
The same with me. I think the CSAM spying software is a security risk, as well as an unnecessary invasion of privacy that can be easily defeated (and please don't try to tell me that I am ignorant of what the CSAM-detecting algorithm does until you have read my many posts on the topic). If Apple says, 'hey, we made a mistake and we're committing to ending this lunacy' then I'll upgrade to iOS 15 and possibly get a new iPhone. Otherwise Apple can kiss my backside, and I have owned and used Apple products since the Lisa.

Many people would have liked to have stayed on ios 6 on their iphone 13 pro max. With modern operating systems two people can have vastly different experiences. But subjectively for me, ios 15 is better than ios 14. Apple stopping security updates for ios 14 won't push the diehards to ios 15, but to those in the know, they'll be faced with potential zero day vulnerabilities.

iOS 15 has been hot garbage since day one.
Right, because most x.0 releases aren’t still mature enough. That’s why I always avoid updating to a point zero release. But once we hit iOS 15.3 I think the system will be mature enough to start enjoying the new features.

Anyways, many people seem to have forgotten how bad iOS 11 and 13 were since the beginning. I don’t think iOS 15 has been so bad.

What are you guys talking about? MacOS has always provided the option to not upgrade and last I checked, Apple made MacOS. You always had to find and download the new OS version on your own. Providing users in iOS this same function is great. The downside is that Apple can't boast about iOS 15+ adoption levels in press releases.

They're talking about iOS, not macOS. Some people say it would also be "great" for iOS to allow side-loading of apps like macOS, yet iOS doesn't allow that. So if Apple did start allowing some sort of side-loading, you could say it's "uncharacteristic" of Apple to do that because it's in reference to iOS, not macOS.

The non-tech masses in particular would also appreciate the UI not changing every year.
That was my point: that non-tech appreciates familiarity.

Someone at apple was interviewed about the incremental updates and he said that Apple purposely increments to not overwhelm users.

I want to update my iPad Air 2 from iPadOS 14 to 15...but am afraid of it becoming too sluggish. It has had a really good run, though. If the price of the Air 4 (2020) ever drops...I'm on it.
Yup. same. I still have my iPad Air 2, which is my oldest Apple device, and even in mint condition on iOS 14, still performs strong. Personally, I think I’m going to leave it at iOS 14 and retire it there. I just don’t see the need for the performance upgrades to iOS 15 and overall, it still does exactly what I need it to for media purposes, and light work loads.

Every new release of any software has people calling it bad, and they will stay on old versions. But yet, they keep releasing new versions and life goes on. Best to update to what works for you, because what works for you, might not work for another. But, that being said...anyone who thinks iOS15 is "hot garbage" has never used an OS that is really garbage.
