Thanks, Ms. Clover, for carefully pointing out that 15 comes after 14. What would we do without such thoughtful writing?…

(You coulda just ended the headline at “upgrade.” It’s just a headline, we’ll get the details in the article…)

iOS 14.8.1 was still available when iOS 15.1.1 was released
iOS 14.8.1 was no longer offered when iOS 15.2 was released

I was so used to big version jumps [iOS 13.4.1 to iOS 14.3 to iOS 14.5 to iOS 14.7 to iOS 14.8] so when iOS 14.8.1 was released I decided to delay it but then iOS 15.2 came and I can no longer do the OTA iOS 14.8.1 update...

I upgraded my iPhone 6s from iOS 13.4 to iOS 15.3 beta 1 since it was my 2nd phone but then it died... It seems to be a hardware issue and I haven't got the time to have it repaired yet... I was thinking of upgrading my iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 15.3 beta but I'm still holding on to iOS 14.8

UI changes introduced in iOS 14 made me regret updating to it [since the iPhone 7 Plus I bought came with iOS 13.4.1] and UI changes introduced in iOS 15 made me want to stay with iOS 14

iOS 13.x has the classic widgets while iOS 14.x introduced the widgets that can be placed on the home screen to mix with app icons and iOS 15.x has the widgets on the home screen by default which wastes screen real estate...

While on the android side: Google’s Android 12 update has been the rockiest in years

The marketing churn need for a major release every year really needs to come to an end. When features are ready, release them.
Exactly. Especially given that the headline “features” have become more and more forgettable… Even die hard Apple fans are struggling to remember the banner features for these “major releases.”

My iPhone is still on 14 because 15 takes away a lot of functionality from Memories. For example, under iOS 15, you can no longer adjust the volume or region of video clips in a Memory. Also, they've made other changes I feel are steps backwards, such as the Calendar widget.

15 is much better. i can't think of any positive reason for staying on 14.

got a feeling they are pushing this now because a certain "feature" is coming soon. maybe even with 15.3

Seems you might be a guinea pig for Apple's CSAM ?
Oh! Hey I didn’t even think of that!!! Wow. Yeah he is 13 and I have a lot of stuff restricted… I think you are on to something! They or the phone is constantly scanning his photos overnight every night! I’m being serious this makes sense!

They will be disappointed when all they find is about 400 picture of our cats! ?

There are some good features on 15 - new maps, private relay, image obfuscation in mail - but overall, I regret moving from 14.8.

15 has been as bad as 11 was for making my - previously fast and snappy - iPhone XR slow and with a general buggy ‘fit and finish’.

I think that Apple needs to take a long hard look at why it feels the need to use the WWDC keynote as an OS feature consumer marketing platform.

It’s obvious that the old fashion yearly Big Bang marketing driven update approach - which is also tied to new iPhone releases - is causing huge problems in terms of software quality. And the CSAM debacle this year hasn’t helped either.

I don't know if this is quite true, Apple is still saying on their website that iOS14 is "our most advanced operating system yet"...
Umm, maybe this is the sign Apple finally wants to let iPod touch die off? Heck, it doesn’t even have enough storage to store 1/4 of my music library nowadays.

This is not at all how the proposed scanning feature would work, so no it doesn’t make sense.

Not getting the hate for ios15. Seems fine to me. Does no one remember iOS 13? Now THAT was buggy.

Some people are noticing more bugs in iOS 15 than others. That's because people use their devices in different ways. Me? I've noticed a few bugs - but none that are critical. On the other hand, I simply don't like iOS 15. I find most of the changes unnecessary and annoying - particularly as they relate to the user interface - and almost all of its new features are irrelevant to me.

In hindsight it was logical:

One of the Apple ecosystem’s greatest advantages is little-to-no software fragmentation (iPadOS, iOS, and watchOS are the same, and they enable macOS to run iOS-targeting software).

Enabling users to stay on older iOS versions would reduce this advantage and force them to spread their software team(s) thin.

Also there are no iPhones since 2017 which can’t be upgraded to iOS 15, so it would really be unwise.

Option to get only security updates was a good idea. Don’t have to deal with bugs which are usually present in new versions of iOS updates. Some bugs do take a long time to be fixed by Apple.

I don't "hate" iOS 15, but I do "hate" that I cannot use CarPlay on iOS 15 without it crashing constantly.
