even if they present a new ipod mini line together with the itunes phone...i´m missing the "revolution" here.
with an invitation looking like this one, there should be more than that.

a mobile playing music. okay.
a new ipod mini. well.
nothing that can be compared with the impact of the first ipod in 2001.

I havent read every single comment here, but I think a video pod is somewhat misguided. An ipod phone with Mini-like capacity is way more plausible. Considering that Korea has phones with 1-3 GIG hard drives available SINCE LAST YEAR I see no reason why Apple and Motorola cant come up with a similiar product unless US cell phone services cannot support fast enough transfers to make downloading from your phone worth while. Even with no downloading through the phone it would would be worth it for the convergence alone. The only thing that can stop this from happening is if samsung hires goons to attack Steve Jobs from behind with steel lcd screens WWF-style when he goes to give his speech.

yeah, wwe-style :)

i think the itunes phone is quite likely,
but it should be a video ipod an itunes movie/media store to size up that invitation.

somebody, dont know if it was here or on applesinsider, stated there could be a new mini line which is based on flash and looks like a little brother of the original ipod. sounds like some nice design, but i´m not interested in minis.

i want the 5g video ipod :D

It's definitely a phone to be released.

I guarantee you that the news corresponds to their impending release of the iTunes enabled Motorola phone. I even found news reports about it through Google News.

What can you already do with an iPod?:
-Listen to music
-Look at photographs
-Listen to audiobooks
-Read notes
-Look at calendars
-Store contacts
-Play simple games
-Set an alarm clock
-Store data
-Run applications installed on the iPod when connected with a computer
-Install OS's

What could be the next logical steps?
-Watch Videos on them directly or
-Store videos and plug them into a TV to watch
-Wireless downloading/streaming of music and/or videos
-built in stereo recording
-built in AM/FM tuner

What I would like to see or maybe think will happen:
-iPod Video: this will allow you to watch video on the iPod itself or through the dock/line out to a TV. you will use QT 7 to encode your own video to put on the iPod or
-iTunes 5: with a video downloads store. there will be lots of music videos at first and maybe some Pixar films to download to your computer and iPod
-the iPods and iPod Mini's will all have color screens for photo viewing
-the iPod videos/5G's will be bumped to 80 & 100GB's
-the iPod videos/5G's will have built in stereo recordin and am/fm tuners
-the iPod videos/5G's will allow (with a dock) DVR recording in a compressed format of television/cable/satellite/etc. that can be easily transferred to your computer

I'd also like to see maybe and iPod DJ/Pro and/or an iPod Tablet:
-the iPod DJ/Pro would be a longer version of the iPod with a widescreen in the middle and 2 click wheels surrounding it. It would allow for multiple songs playing/crossfading b/t these songs/etc. so that one iPod could be used to do some digital dj'ing.
-the iPod Tablet would be touchscreen, run a stripped down version of tiger, and allow for you to use it as a video player, music player, photo viewer, document reader/editor (in general a PocketMac)

What they will likely come out with is an iPod Nano. This will be surgically implanted in your skull and will store as much music, photos, videos, documents, contacts, etc. as your brain can handle. Just think it and you will hear, see, know what's there. With wireless capabilities built in you can download from iTunes anytime you catch a signal. You may get headaches though if you try to add a WMA audio track :)

To shed some light on the speculation...

People don't seem to understand that this iTunes phone is just a Motorola phone with iTunes capability. It's not an iPhone, it's not an iPod. It's a phone that plays music. That's not to say that there may not be mention or even a brief announcement of such a device...it's in the realm of possibility, but the iTunes phone is Motorola's baby, not Steve Jobs', and we've seen what happens to cool devices that are not the brainchild of Jobs (Newton anyone???) That being said...

With the rumor that Samsung is supplying 4GB flash chips to Apple, I don't think all of them are going to iPod minis. We all know that accessing a DVD's worth of material off an iPod would suck a battery dry in an hour or two. But if that information is pulled from a 4 GB flash cache...then we're talking decent battery life...so put those complaints of low battery life to rest.

In conjunction with Toshiba's manufacture of the 80GB 1.8" drives, I believe we have a solid rumor on our hands. Steve Jobs is not the kind of person to book the Moscone Center and invite the press to an event for somebody else's product (read: Moto iPhone), he's going to take the spotlight for himself. Enter the iPod AV (iPod video, iPod movie, vPod) whatever you wanna call it. Video is the next logical step in the progression of the iPod. Notice the name of the product....iPOD...not iPlayer, not iMusic, iPod...the center of your portable digital life.

Now imagine this, an iPod with a full face LCD screen (dare I go as far as OLED...I wish) with a "virtual" click wheel. I'm sure Apple can provide some sort of engineering prowess to the idea of a click wheel beneath an LCD screen if not simply a touch sensitive LCD ala the PocketPC or Palm device. But allowing for a full face iPod screen would provide ample room to watch DVD's on flights, during times of boredom, bus trips, plane trips, car rides, not to mention the cool factor. Look at Apple's product design and knack for minimalist asthetic. There will be no buttons on this iPod, I'm going to venture a guess that the next iPod (if not this, then one in the future) will be a full faced LCD screen with touch capability, with progression into a possibility of data entry ala Palm/Newton for all you Newton maniacs.

Just my two cents.

I normally hate the idea of a video iPod, but this at least sounds plausible. I definitely like your ideas.

Also, Apple would have to give us something like an "iFlicks" or something along those lines, so that the user experience would be akin to iPod/iTunes's ease of use.

A couple of points:

I watched SpiderMan 2 on a friend's PSP, and it was a pretty good. The screen was really sharp and impressive. But PSP's aren't really burning up the market, are they? (i'm asking, i have no idea) And that's basically what this thing would be competing with.

The only people who would benefit from such a device would be people with long commutes on trains and tech/gadget nerds like all of us.

It's been said time and time again, music can be a background activity, movies can't. I couldn't use my VideoPod while I cleaned my house.

I just don't know that there is much of a market for this.

And finally the main point - that in my opinion is getting overlooked - is that this event is being billed as a MUSIC event, not video.

Who knows. I'll get one anyway.

If it's the phone, what better way to draw attention to an otherwise unremarkable product than by comparing this new mystery device to the revolution and genius of the original iPod?

Typical Apple, really.

I'm hoping it IS something amazing, but I mean - talk about counting your chickens before they hatch.

I Agree, but in the Article it also says something like Apple may introduce a new line of iPods to replace it's current popular mini line-up.

Arrrgh, i'm a little disappointed! :( I like the current ipod mini a lot since
it has a nice metal case. I can only hope that the new one will be en par
or even better. Maybe i just order a ipod mini 6gb now...

i got this from my stock link

I have stock in apple and was sent this by the mailing list for apple news. It should dispell some of the rumors.....

"Apple (AAPL:Nasdaq) and Motorola (MOT:NYSE) will unveil a new cell phone that plays music from the iTunes online jukebox as early as next week, published reports said Tuesday.
The phone will be sold by Cingular, the wireless venture of SBC (SBC:NYSE) and BellSouth (BLS:NYSE) , various stories said.
Prospects for a U.S. launch in the third quarter of 2005 were reported last month.
Cell phones represent a key battleground of the digital-music war, with Apple seeking a beachhead from which it can protect the hegemony of its ultra-successful iPod franchise. Cingular is expected to make the phone available in time for Christmas.
Apple is also on the verge of announcing a version of its iPod Mini that uses flash memory instead of a disk drive, the Wall Street Journal reporte"

what about a completely new ipod-lineup?

a 5g with video features.
new minis with flash memory and maybe a new design.
the itunes mobile.
and maybe some new shuffles.

i just cant and i wont believe that this lousy mobile is all they present next wednesday.
and even if its the mobile plus new minis, thats still not enough for an announcement like this.
c´mon apple, there are so many of us waiting for the 5g, video-ipod!

I missed the bit where it said "Apple are not going to release enhanced iPods".

The invite is quite clear:

1) It is revolutionary (an iPhone which is treated like a Shuffle by your computer AND by the online iTMS to which is can connect, and which knows what music you have rights to, or rent is merely evolutionary, it is not revolutionary) on the same scale as the iPod was.

2) The reference to 1000 songs, in a past tense. The next big thing is not 1000 songs, it is 1000 $foo.

3) The PP5022 supports MPEG4 decoding. Apple have been negotiating for music videos for iTMS. Apple's massive support for H.264/MPEG4.

4) Price cuts in high resolution <4" displays. If a $149 digital camera can have a 320x240 2" display, then a $499 device can have a 320x240, 480x320 or 640x480 ~3" display.

5) The watch pocket on the invite. Watch? Watch what? Tick tock or view?

Personally, I think that the entire line will be overhauled. Some lines will get minor updates, some major.

256MB iPhone $contract
1GB Shuffle $99
2GB Shuffle $149
4GB iPod Flash $199
8GB iPod Mini $249
20GB iPod $299
40GB vPod $399
80GB vPod $499

Maybe it'll be called lifePod, not vPod. It's got more of a ring to it, and implies even more functionality than it will actually have.

Honestly, after reading about this whole thing and taking a step back from all of the hype and rumors, I can't see why it wouldn't be a video iPod. Even despite what Jobs has been quoted as saying several times. There has just been too much evidence recently with all the copyright changes and such. The whole "1000 songs in your pocket" thing WAS a revolution in portable audio, and I think a vPod could do similar things.

Apple and Jobs know that they have to keep on top of everyone else in the mp3 market, because, frankly, this is the biggest business opportunity Apple has had in a long time. This should keep 'em goin for another couple of years at least. Also, this would be just in time to kind of cover the whole ugly intel switch on the macs. Not to get off topic, but I think if they release the vPod now, and follow that up with a dual boot OS X/Vista box, or OS X for Windows, you could see some serious momentum shifts in the entire computer industry. I'm talking HISTORY here! Bottom line is, I'm very excited!
VVV I disagree unless it is something very apple designed. They wouldn't let cingular/moto take away huge potential profits. VVV

iPod Cell Phone! That's it.

We all know it is coming and this is the time. This is the new iPod. The NY Times basically confirmed it in their article. It is a Motorola-Apple-Cingular device. Cingular confirmed it to a source who leaked it to the NYTimes. That is the announcement.

The revolution is one device for music and connectivity, voice and data. People who expect something else will be disappointed.

I want to rent movies on my iPod!

Someone tossed out the term "iFlicks" a few posts back and it finally got my imagination going.

I have brushed off the Video iPod idea b/c that last thing I'm going to do is carry around a movie on a tiny screen. I'm a huge movie geek, but to me the experience is about quality presentation and being immersed in the experience. A handheld device can't do that for video, but I can get on the bus, pop in my earbuds, close my eyes and I'm "in", you know?

Now, I currently pay $15 a month for Blockbuster Online and get movies delivered to me in the mail that I cue up on a list. I would drop this in a second if (PREDICTION) Apple's Video iPod concept was not based on watching the content on the device, but RENTING (via download) a movie that I could then watch by docking my iPod with my TV. Limit it to a time period or a specific number of viewings...I don't care. But if it costs less than $4 a flick, I'm in!

Apple started down this road when they gave us the ability to show a picture slideshow on our TV's from and iPod dock. Kick it up a notch, Apple!

P.S. The last thing I want is the most miserable of devices (the cell phone) merged with the most brilliant (my iPod).

that´s my guess, too.
maybe an all-new ipod line.
reducing the 60-gig-color, and filling the gap with two new video ipod which include the new harddrives of toshiba, with the 40 (single) and the 80 (double), what results in a 40-gig-ipod being not much larger than the 20-gig-models now.

i think it will be the phone AND the video ipod.
the phone is obvious, i read about the presentation of the itunes mobile on september 7th days or weeks before i heard about the apple presentation.

but i still think the mobile is a moto product, and its not moto who´s inviting, it´s apple.

i think apple would go the quality way and enable both: watching movies or clips on the screen (which would surely be bigger and much better than the current ipod screens), or watching them at home on yuour tv, like you´re able to watch your photos on the big screen with the ipod color/photo.

a real ipod video should be able to do both: watching some clips, tv series or whatever when youre bored in train or plane, or take your fav flicks to your friends with your ipod and watch them on the tv.

I think you grossly overestimate the amount of people who would shell out lots of money for a VASTLY inferior experience. Audio works because you don't lose anything by making it portable. Only super-geeks would draw any enjoyment out of watching a 220x176 movie.
Depends on the movie. No, it probably wouldn't work for, say, Star Wars. But 16 Candles? When Harry met Sally? Or any of the other classic movies where you don't need a great visual experience to enjoy the movie? There could be a market. Just playing around, I shrunk a video down to around 200 pixels wide on my desktop, and you can still get a great idea of what's going on. I can imagine a market of people riding public transportation, or riding in the back seat of a car.

Dave

Many seem to think an iPod video would necessarily mean an Apple movie store. Wouldn't we had heard a little more on this? There's a lot of signing to be done with major movie distributors and studios unless you want to watch only Pixar's films on your iPod or other portable device legally. Apple could on the otherhand just make the iPod video-capable and say it works with your own videos. Of course we all know everybody would be watching ripped DVDs as soon as they got theirs.
The only option of downloading movies I see is downloading only smaller versions (smaller than 720P). High def movies would requiere way too much bandwidth. And compressing to a lower resolution takes forever. Just try compressing 1 hour of video to H.264 to see how much it takes and how annoying compressing your movies could become. I think a video iPod would only be able to play low resolutions, especially of H.264 video.
All that said, what would any of this have to do with a Special Music Event?

It is a MUSIC event because it's about the iPod that changed music...now it's going to change something else. There are no reports of an iPod Video probably because the details are tightly under wraps. Did anyone see the 12" or 17" Powerbooks coming prior to the night before MWSF 03? I stand by my idea that a video iPod is to come. If not at the music event, then at Paris, if not at Paris...then sometime soon. It's a natural progression and evolution, but only Apple can make an evolutionary product revolutionary. The revolution will be tied to offering content in a way nobody else does...

satellite radio ipod

What about XM ipod? Haven't seen any speculation about that yet, and that would be more useful than video IMO.

And I don't own, nor do I care to own a cell phone, so any news about a ipod phone don't excite me in the least. Besides, I don't think Apple would make a big deal for someone else's (Mororola's) product launch.

because the main feature of an ipod video would still be playing music.

maybe apple starts with just more doenloadable music videos, they already have some.
and then, after a few weeks or months they have some good arguments for the discussions with the industry, as many ipod videos have been sold and theres a good base for a movie store.

but i cant get rid of the feeling that the vid ipod comes with itunes 5, and the "killer feature" in itunes 5 is a video/movie shop, right form the beginning.

Not to mention, Apple is going to stomp Creative's Zen Vision release...as good as a product as it seems right now, Apple will do it right, just like they destroyed Creative's (and everyone else's) MP3 Player market with the original iPod. There are a number of Personal Media Players out there now...nobody has gotten it right yet. The Zen Vision is the closest right now probably, but these devices are clunky, suffer low battery life, and the user interface and interface with a computer are horrendous. Enter Apple...

Apple have a UK event as well on the same day.

Cingular don't operate in the UK.

Why do people keep saying this is going to be a music event??

Does the invitation say "come to our special music event/product release"??

From everything I've been able to gather, most people THINK it will be a music-related event.

Whatever the invite says, I'm sure it does not say what type of event it will be, other than that it is hosted by Apple, and that Apple is going to try to knock your socks off.

<dream mode on> hummm...if the ipants thing is true, maybe there will be new isocks...ones that have little piezo-generators built in so you don't have to build in a battery...... ;) <dream mode off>
