Is there a good way I can actually hear / notice this new spatial audio? I have AirPods Pro and iOS 14.6. In the Apple Music app I’m indeed seeing Dolby Atmos on some albums, but no idea what to listen for exactly…

I said the same thing, as did many others.

Some tracks sound fine, but the majority sound much lower. If that is how it is going to be, I would rather take whatever better quality I get from "Lossless" on my AirPods Pro and just go with Stereo vs. Dolby Atmos.

So far I am iffy on this, but it is literally rolling out as we type and it might be something technical, so I will hold off complete judgement until it is confirmed this it how "Spatial Audio" is going to be.

Exactly the same

Does anyone else find the spatial audio hides the vocals behind the music? I have to the. The volume way higher than usual. Is that normal?
Yes, this is normal and good !

music these days is compressed to hell to make it sound “good”. That means loud.
It seems the Atmos mixes have a much lower ceiling, meaning lots of dynamic range and everything is super clear. But, you need to pump your master volume to compensate.

blinding lights by the weeknd is a great example, in the stereo mix you can here all the compression on the bass, but in spatial it’s lovey and detailed like it should be !

I’m not really hearing a difference when Dolby Atmos is turned on

Me either. I switch on spatial audio (icon is lit but not animated like when viewing movie)Sounds same to me. Have Dolby digital on. Song says Dolby digital when playing.

Same thing happened to me. It was there after a restart and now it’s gone. So frustrating.
Unsure of if you disagree with something on my initial post or if it was a reaction error… but either way if you still haven’t been able to get the features to work I found a workaround mentioned on twitter and it worked immediately for me. You just disable Sync Library briefly and the settings popped right up for me. Anyway, good luck and enjoy.

Went from 35GBs of music to 122GB lossless and Dolby Atmos. Glad I got 256GB iPhone.

Still not seeing these settings on my iPhone or iPad running 14.6. I've tried all of the tricks to try and get it to appear. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: Finally showed up… testing it out now!

I find that Automatic Dolby Atmos setting sounds way better with my Airpods max compared to Always On.

Why is that?

also and just to be clear: I don’t see a ‘Spatial Audio’ option. It just shows Dolby Atmos & Audio Quality
I have no clue myself, I was just playing with the settings and I find the Automatic Setting sounds more immersive for me, maybe its just placebo.

Meatloaf-I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)

It is only in “Lossless” but no one can convince me that we are not getting some benefit from lossless on AirPods Pro because the whole song sounds absolutely amazing, but the intro of the song is probably the best sound quality I have ever heard on Apple Music!

Someone else please give it a listen and let me know if I am crazy, haha.

A really great song to test Spatial Audio on is MODUS by Joji. Toggling Spatial Audio on and off allows for a noticeable difference in the song, but both versions are great in their own right. The Spatial Audio version feels more airy and has a great chorus effect on the vocals. This special/separate version of the album with Spatial Audio was very much mixed with this feature in mind.

Testing other random songs with Spatial Audio and you get the sense that some song mixes were done poorly by engineers that may not have experience mixing for Atmos. Whole songs have their spatial field left pretty bare, and the mix ends up feeling much more lifeless than the stereo one.

This will really be a hit or miss feature, that will really complicate how many versions of a song people bounce between.

This did the trick! Spread the word!
Just discovered another reason to HATE this feature (for now, anyway).

I just played the title track from Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and enjoyed the Atmos mastering. Then, as that song faded into the second track on the album, the sound quality completely changed because it isn't mastered for Atmos.

I do not want to listen to an album mastered completely two different ways
This works. Got it on my Iphone. I am in UK. Lady Gaga - Rain on me in Atmos. WOW.

What worked for me was toggling some buttons on and off as someone posted in this thread.
Music sounds much better now.

It must depend on the DAC, I just went from Crowded House @24/44.1 to Eagles (Hotel California) @24/192 on iPhone 11 Pro Max -> Matrix mini-i Pro 3.

iOS works , macOS doesn't.

Auto sample rate switching has worked on iOS for years (like with Tidal app).
