Just discovered another reason to HATE this feature (for now, anyway).

I just played the title track from Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and enjoyed the Atmos mastering. Then, as that song faded into the second track on the album, the sound quality completely changed because it isn't mastered for Atmos.

I do not want to listen to an album mastered completely two different ways

Not working on my iPhone or Mac, but is on my iPod gen 7. If you click on the Lossless logo, the tracks resolution is displayed. E.g. listening to the new Crowded House now at 24-bit, 44.1KHz ALAC.

I can hear the difference, but then I spend far too much on headphones

Just listened to When Doves Cry and I Want You Back with spatial audio. Gonna take a while to get used to but I think I like it. With lossless I couldn’t notice the difference. But maybe it doesn’t work with my Dragonfly DAC which I’m passing through a USB-A to USB-C adapter?

Live in Brisbane Australia. iOS 15, iPhone.
I took someone's suggestion here and played Billie Eilish, bad guy. It felt like she was singing directly into my ear - creepy !

iPhone 12... playing Metallica's Black Album loud and clear lossless on airpods pro. 🤟 Clear difference when playing the same from and old iPad that is not getting (yet?) the update

OK, just listened to my first Atomos track: Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity."

Sounds absolutely awful.

The vocals are muddy, the snare drum has lost all of its snap, and the sibilance is painful.

Now, this is just one song, and a couple of weeks ago I did hear Dolby's own Atmos demo of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On," which sounded brilliant.

So, I'm guessing this is going to be a mixed bag for a while.
It’s not Spatial Audio at all. I don’t see animation and when I turn off spatial it actually sounds better. Either Apple screwed up mixing or it’s not actually turned on.

I got it to show up on my iPhone 12 mini / iOS 14.6 just now by going into the Music settings and randomly toggling on and off things like "Automatic Downloads" and "Cellular Data." After doing that a few times, the settings for Atmos suddenly showed up.
THIS - TOTALLY THIS. Haha. I had it originally and lost it when I went to turn everything to 11. Nice Find!!!

Not super impressed with the mix on Ariana’s stuff. It’s cool to hear certain parts I missed in the stereo mix, but the vocals are buried and a lot of things are muddy.

Interesting.

Now I got it on both my phone and iPad (both on 14.6)

Live now in Thailand with iOS 14.6 😊

That just worked for me as well!

Don’t worry, hardly anyone can hear a difference between lossless and high quality compressed. Even then it might require many comparisons, switching back and forth between compressed/lossless.

Took the longest to appear on my iPhone but just showed up, and seems to have appeared on my Apple TV too. So that's everything now.

Not really interested in Atmos but I'll take the lossless, thanks.

Would the new audio features apply to music purchased via the iTunes store or only the Apple music streaming service?

I have it on my 11 Pro Max on iOS 15, but not on my 12 Pro Max with 14.6.

Like some people have already said, sometimes the volume gets a little crazy. Some tracks sound great and loud, others sound low on max volume using brand new AirPods Pro. Also, to me it sounds like sometimes during a song it will switch from spatial audio, to normal stereo and back or something?

This is just being rolled out, so there might be some issues at first...who knows?

So far, I am impressed with Spatial Audio on those certain tracks when it is loud and not muffled or whatever is going on. Hoping these are just kinks and they get worked out.

Edit: Just showed up on my 12 Pro Max, went to using that and still get that muffled sound on certain tracks, but not the quick breakups I was getting on my 11 Pro Max with the AirPods Pro.

:apple:

That Queensryche song doesn’t even show up as Dolby Atmos for me, just lossless.
