How about on the checkout page, there is a checkbox for "send me a charger" and it is unchecked by default, which also applies a $20 discount in your cart. You can leave it unchecked, accept the discount, and not get a charger (which most people will do since it is the default), or you can check it and get a separate $20 charger sent to you along with your iPhone (pretty much the same as if you added one to your cart during checkout today).

This would be the reasonable approach. But Apple won't do that because it is entirely about the money.

Why would they do this when a 5W USB charger costs no more than $1 or $2 to make?

Buyers are already effectively getting a discount as prices haven’t increased with inflation; the $999 price of the XS would be $1137.77 today. Yet the 13pro remains $999.

You can add a charger to your online order now. The entire order is $19 cheaper if you don't buy it. The charger is one of the accessory items recommended right before you checkout. Not having a charger added to your order is the default. If you need it, buy it. if not, save $19 + Tax

Nope, because it should not be an additional cost on top of iPhone. This little maneuver has made Apple more money than most businesses make in their entire existence.

Apple raised prices of iPhone at the same that they removed charger and earpods from the box. They also saved over $6 billion in the first year after doing.

How is making the phone $20 cheaper without the charger not adding an additional cost to the phone if you choose to add it? You are arguing against your original argument. If the price increases because you add a charger then the charger is not included in the price of the phone. Checking a box or adding it to the cart before you checkout is materially the same thing. The price of the phone is the price of the phone. If you want to pay the same price for an iPhone with a charger, you will need a time machine. Time, inflation, and increased component cost render the "Greedy Apple is making more money selling us less" arguments moot. Their financial statement show they are making less profit margins on hardware than previous years.

I don't want to hear about inflation. Apple makes obscene profits from its products, and when they make anti-customer moves like removing value from a purchase without adjusting the price, they deserve the flak they get for it. Your position is indefensible.

Exactly. It really boggles my mind that people think this is an issue. How is it any different than buying a Mac Mini? You have to have a keyboard and mouse to use it, yet those are sold separately. Is anyone complaining about that? LOL! And that's even "worse" because a keyboard and mouse are going to cost more than a little wall charger for your iPhone.

The problem isn't Apple getting flak but government overreach. Let the market speak for itself without the government butting in where it doesn't belong. If people continue to buy iPhones, then obviously their actions speak louder than words. If they stop buying them to protest the lack of included charger, then Apple will get the message.

They didn’t make the phone $20 cheaper without the charger, that’s what you and many others don’t get. After removing the charger from the box, Apple continued to sell the iphones at the same price as before, when the charger was included in the box. Therefore, they are still including the $20 price of the charger as part of the iphone price, but by not including the charger anymore those $20 per iphone go straight to their profits.

No one is going to stop buying iPhones over the charger, that's the problem. Apple continuously gets away with anti-customer behavior with no repercussions. Apple could do a lot worse and still keep all of their customers.

None of this suggests regulation. That's not appropriate or applicable and Brazil is just being dumb. But Apple deserves to be dragged through the mud for anti-customer decisions.

Because most Apple users don’t really behave as customers, they behave as fans. They will buy anything Apple makes just because it’s Apple, and find some way to justify each of Apple’s anti-customer decisions. And with Apple’s help, of course, like the argument that removing the charger is to help the environment.

Given the above, one can always be rational and vote with their $$$. (There is no reality distortion field)

Whoever the "they" are, Apple consumers buy Apple, not because it's Apple, but because of what Apple signifies. Quality production, quality service, quality support.
and find some way to justify each of Apple’s anti-customer decisions.
And this bothers you why? Just don't buy Apple if the product doesn't fit you.
And with Apple’s help, of course, like the argument that removing the charger is to help the environment.
Yes, there is clearly some positive impact to the environment.

They shouldn’t include the box anymore or plastic either. Since it’s been shrinking and it’s also waste. Just hand out the phones, no box no cable no charger. ?? The logic here is so weird lately! Lol.

Not sure if the point made was the opposite, but I would prefer to get just the iPhone: any additional packaging just goes to waste immediately and does not add any value to the purchase. Not only that is worth 0 to me, but I really would like to avoid producing that extra waste. Regarding cables and chargers, I already have those by dozens and charge wirelessly anyways.

Apple, please stop selling iPhones with any packaging, cables or chargers.

That's not a problem. That just proves most people don't think this is a big deal.

Well I'm glad to hear you're against government regulation in this area at least. It would be very interesting to know what percentage of iPhone buyers even need a charger. I bet it's not very large. But even if it were large, the whole thing is being blown WAY out of proportion. There are lots of things you have to make separate purchases for to be fully functional. For example, if I buy a laminator, many don't include laminating pouches or film, yet the laminator is useless without them. You can buy "bare" battery-powered tools that won't work unless you purchase a battery (and also a charger for that battery). Yes, often manufacturers will offer bundles that include needed accessories, but many don't. So this is not some Apple-specific thing, and I reject the notion that it constitutes "anti-customer behavior". I think a lot of customers are overly whiny. It would be one thing if Apple didn't make it clear what you were and weren't getting, but they do.

It was wrong for Apple to remove $40 retail worth of accessories from the box and not adjust the price accordingly. Actually they raised prices at the same time, just to prove what insatiable greed they have. I don't care what comparisons can be made. I don't care how many people need a charger. I don't care. It was wrong for them to do it, and they did it anyway, because the hell with the customer, let's save $6 billion this year. End of story mate.

The flip side is there are plenty of other manufacturers out there if one so vehemently disagrees with the business practices of a company.

"Wrong" based on what standard? This isn't like price gouging of essential products or services. There's nothing legally nor ethically wrong with it. You've gotten yourself all in a tizzy over it I see, though. Why not just go buy a phone from another manufacturer if you don't like Apple's pricing? Apple, like any other publicly traded company, is in business to make as much money as they legitimately can for their shareholders. They are also reducing waste. Sounds like a win-win to me!

So you’re claiming there were no other differences between iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 that might’ve led to a price change. And you’re further claiming that the 12 mini wasn’t placed at the 11’s price point, letting them position the 12 a little higher in the lineup?

As for the claim that Apple saved $6Bn due to the chargers… where did you see that they’d sold the 2-3 billion phones necessary for that savings from a charger that costs $2-3 to make?

Apple also switched to more expensive displays, and 5G, which is more expensive to implement. Google also hiked up the price of the 5G Pixel phones. Oh, and the new Pixel doesn't ship with a charger in the box either.
