I was wondering the same thing o_O

Where I live in California, it's $11.50 for a standard ticket, $15.50 for a 3D ticket, and $18 for an IMAX ticket. And that's just one theater -- it's more pricy at some of the other theaters around here.

They're not where you live? Full price tickets at my local first-run theaters are actually only $8.75 or $9, now that I think about it, but if you've got six or seven people there to watch the movie, this would be cheaper even if you had to pay $50. Plus, the popcorn is cheaper and tastier at my house. ;)

I'd have to say let it be... Piracy will shoot through the roof, therefore box office rates will decline drastically in the 3rd week.

Agree with a lot of other commenters here... I'd be willing to pay $20-$35 for this depending on the film. I would only pay $50 if it included ownership rights, otherwise I'd rather head to the theater.

This does make sense when you think about how many people have really huge TVs and great sound systems nowadays. The theater will always be a special place to see a film but it will steadily decline as an industry if these kinds of options are introduced.

Really it comes down to whether or not the big studios want to save that industry or not, and that comes down to whether they remain profitable or not :D

More dinosaur thinking in the media industry.. jack the prices sky high and people will pay.. fellas it never works for the masses, keep dreaming!

Seriously....

Who thinks of this stuff??
Any original thought at all??

Next we will have exclusive argument all over again.Every media company will be asking for more and more and more.
Where is the Apple TV that Steve Jobs " cracked"?

Netflix originals/ Amazon original / Google original ....we are right back where we started...

Dope. This is great no matter which company gets the rights - because the scene groups are just gonna upload them anyway.

They aren't extorting people. The theater makes very little money on the movie tickets sold and has to make a large majority of their profits with concession sales.
I wouldn't mind paying if I had more of a choice but seems that theatres are locked into certain brands of candy etc. Therefore I presume they are getting big money from these candy companies.

I live 10 minutes from a nice modern movie theater, so paying the same or more for watching at home doesn't seem like a good deal.

As a parent that can not easily get somebody to watch my son. I'd pay $50 for the occasional movie. The theater just isn't an option unless I also get a sitter. So $50 would be a bargain.
That said I'd be happier with the $50 price if it came with the movie purchase. Even if that purchase didn't take effect until the regular disc release. Treat the early rental as a preorder.

Well this should greatly increase the quality of movies that people record in the theatres with their phones and put online. At least if they are taking them from their TV it will be brighter and with better sound. I am guessing that someone smart will figure out how to get the actual data from the stream and save that so they can leak it also. $50 for a rental isn't really that much, if you take a family of 4 to the movies it costs over $50 and some people would rather watch it at home. The only problem is the kids wanting to watch it again thinking its just like any other netflix movie and having them cry when you won't pay another $50

This is a great idea!

It costs me and my wife $15 x 2 = $30, plus $30 for a babysitter = $60 just to go to the theaters to watch a movie.

$50 is CHEAPER and also much more convenient to be able to watch it at home after the kids are asleep. $50 is well worth it. You have to think about other lifestyles. $50 is not good for a single person. They have cheaper options to see the movie. Other people don't.
really just priced my wife and 2 kids for standard= $59 and Imax = $ 87.00 without any concessions

That would be great. I don't like my local theater. We have some hobos who are lurking near the parking garage or sometimes in the parking garage. Especially if it's close outside. It's creepy.

If we could have a girls night at home with a nice movie, that would be great.

Couldn't care less since Apple is one of the only major digital movie renters who still abides by the moronic "30 days to start, 24 hours to finish" rental policy. Amazon, Google, Sony etc all let you have multiple days to finish a movie (or watch it more than once, share it with a family member etc etc).

Three people going to the theater can easily add up to $50.

Also, Steve Jobs at All Things D 2010 said he believed that people would be willing to spend "a bunch of money" to watch a first run movie at home before the DVD/blu-ray release.

This. Too many people are projecting and complaining about how they would watch a movie. A family of 5 can easily spend over $100 for one movie when you factor in tickets, popcorn and soda.

Even then, I still consider movies to be one of the best bargains when compared to other forms of entertainment.

Luckily for me I have a lifetime membership to torrent sites! Sometimes I get a HD quality movie before it's in the theaters. If they think that I'm willing pay $50 to rent a movie they must be MAD!

I've been rethinking employment lately, I've realized I can just buy a firearm and then go into banks to take as much money as I need or want. It's all FDIC insured anyway so as long as I never actually fire the gun it's a victimless crime. If society thinks I'm going to put in the effort to WORK 40+ (in my case heavy on the "plus") hours every week they must be MAD!
