Nope. Other companies have been trying for years to negotiate this with the studios and it's not going to happen. The cinematic ecosystem is so entrenched in it's own politics that they'd never give up revenue share on such a risky venture as this. Piracy would jump to a whole new level, and the suits know it. Besides that, Steve Jobs himself couldn't negotiate TV rights for petes sake, so who is Tim Cook think he's fooling here talking about negotiating Hollywood rights?
Fix the Mac, Tim, stop wasting time on self driving cars and first run movie nonsense.

I'd have to say let it be... Piracy will shoot through the roof, therefore box office rates will decline drastically in the 3rd week.
or maybe they will make more money - they will have home rental + theater + disk sells + movie streaming....this will be great for lower profile movies I don't feel like going but I would be perfectly fine watching from home.

it is literary impossible to go against video anti-piracy. You can have something record the screen (standard screen recorder) and you are done after you watched/played the movie.

$25 Sounds like a good deal to me. Even $50 is cheap.

Movie ticket is $18 , popcorn , candy and a drink is usually $15. If I take a date it's x2

Since when are movie tickets $10 each for adults?
Since now.

I've been thinking they should do this for a while. Would really give the AppleTV a killer must-have feature if it were exclusive to Apple. I'd be more than will to pay $25 to rent a movie still in theatres in the comfort of my home and not have to pay $30 for refreshments or deal with people kicking the back of my seat.

I would like that if they finally up the quality to match the price.

The price is OK for a rental if they give us proper 200 mbit 4096x2160/12 bit JPEG 2000 DCP downloads. At the current iTunes prices, i'd even settle with the 100mbit H.265 10 bit you can find on consumer UHD blu rays.

But the "HD" they currently offer is just an insult.

We need a Spotify of movies for $9.99 how soon will that take before it happens?
Netflix content to not the best.

I guess I'm gonna have to charge people to come to my home and watch whatever movies that is being shown at the theater.

There's so much quality content included with Netflix and HBO etc that I cant imagine this competing. Hardly anybody is going to pay $50 for a movie rental. That's 1000% the rate to rent it 90 days later.

Edit: Looks like I'm in the minority though. I'd rather pay $50 to a theater and get an evening out of the house.

I would happily pay $25-$50 for that option. It would not be every week, but at least once a month. Even though it's just two of us, it adds up quickly. Two standard movie tickets are $22.50. Plus two drinks and medium popcorn is $23.00. So I'm at $50.50, and didn't have dinner or drinks before or after the movie. Which will be requested by my SO. lol.

Let's not forget all the perks I would get. No loud talkers, crying babies, unsupervised kids, people on cell phones, sticky floors and random farts from dude in front of me. lol.

$12-15. No higher (price of an average primetime ticket). Or very, very few people will ever do this unless they're made of money.

I watch a movie maybe once or twice a week. However, I go to the movies about once every six months. If they made it so that I was paying $5 to $10 a week to watch new movies, they would make out better than the $1 that Redbox gets and the $40 twice a year from going to the movies.

When you make it more of a hassle to pirate than pay a small amount for something, people miraculously stop pirating (except the hard core pirates).

The TV and Movie industries deserve whatever bad happens to them because they have resisted embracing the technology that would make people happy to give their money.

How many people have good things to say about cable or the movie industries? Some day, it's going to bite them on the butt. They saw what happened to music, but learned all the wrong lessons.

€40 is basically minimum for 2 people to go to the movies where I live at the moment..
If they make it available for $25 then it´s a bargin :)

It makes sense for families - but I don't go to the movies with others- I would never pay more than the cost of a ticket ($8-$12 here) to watch anything at home.

If you don't live in a big city, they are still well under $10. My mom lives in a small town and tickets are still $6.50. But of course the seating and projection kind of suck (and no IMAX, there is 3D but it's bad) and you have limited choice for movies.

If they do this at a reasonable price (hopefully closer to the $25), it might prompt me to upgrade my 50" plasma to a 65"+ OLED.

I'd pay this if only to avoid going to the cinema where all you hear are foreign students translating the film to their friend, popcorn crunching, sweetie rattling, people kicking the back of your seat and those filthy seats. Bring it on.

At $25 this would be pretty great for me. We have a 92" projector setup in our living room, and two tickets to the movies are around $30 here. Since we don't want to pay for babysitters we do playdate swaps which means we can't get out to the movies much anyway. Being able to sit at home and watch the occasional movie still-in-theaters would be swell.

It cost $20 for 2 to go to the theater and $20 for 2 for food and drinks. I don't see the perks here because I'd rather just buy the movie for $20 or watch it on Redbox for $2 about. Maybe $10 imo it would be worth it for some movies but will probably never happen.

But if you have a family of 4 and it is $15 a piece to get in....? Which is my (obviously anecdotal) case, the math makes more sense.

That said, I'd rent a movie for $25 on occasion, but there is no way I'm paying $50.

The more people that could watch at once (at home), the better the per-person price is, so imagine the "value" will be relative to cost/headcount. $50 for a major release for just my wife and I? That's a trip to the theater or wait for home video - a $25-30 family film the whole crew can watch? (well all three of us :D) that's reasonable to me.

Other perks for home viewing (assuming you have a decent AV setup):

- no driving / parking
- more comfortable seats
- potentially cheaper (driving/parking/food/babysitters)
- pause for bathroom/beverage/food breaks (assuming it would support this)
- rewind for missed dialog, rewatch (again, assuming ...)
- no crowds, better/quieter experience (might be a deficit for some comedies that are fun to see in a big group, YMMV)
- better food, snacks, plus +adult+ beverages (none of our locals have the latter, though we have hit up the Universal Studios theater which was *fun*)

Yep, and can't put a price tag on the cold viruses/flu that you could catch in a movie theater.

I'm surprised they would even consider something like this. People will find ways of ripping the movie to pirate. It would be far better than the cams you see right now especially in terms of audio.

I would pay for it, I don't like going to the movie theaters.

That and I don't have any friends to go with
