Personally I like PC gaming, a large amount of titles, so much missing from MacOS and iOS. I am not sure gaming is in Apples DNA. That being said, consoles are kinda dead so there is room there. And I know iOS is the biggest gaming platform ever, but the quality is low. Grown ups game with keyboards and mice, children use buttons, analog sticks and touch screens. I just hope Apple adds loot boxes /s :)

This service is designed to create those games. It's going to take a few years, at least.

Since all the game developers have become addicted to basically getting free money from exploiting known gambling techniques, this is the only way to change the status quo. Removing the "pay-as-you-go" model forces developers to focus on gameplay to keep people engaged and I'm thrilled for that.
I'd be all for it, then, because the pay system is broken.

That's the problem. They aren't going to remove the freemium model. It makes too much money for devs and Apple. This service would be in addition to the freemium model. Only certain devs would even be interested. Although "everybody" hates freemium model, everybody ain't willing to drop $5 to $10 on a mobile game. Heck, if the revenue distribution is anything to go by, most aren't willing to do so. It would be nice, but I seriously doubt this service would change the status quo.

If you were really an Apple fan you would gladly pay for mobile games so Apple could get their 30% cut and make more money so that you could brag online about how much money Apple made and how they deserve to make a lot of money because they do so many wonderful things for and if not for Apple we’d still be living in caves waiting for the next lighting strike so we could make a fire. :D:D:p

It's crazy how many subscriptions consumers are expected to take out. A subscription for music, TV, dog food, vitamins and a plethora of other examples.

Marx predicted that when capitalism and technology reach a peak they transform into a service-based shared resource economy. Unfortunately people took those ideas and distorted them into various forms of authoritarianism because they didn’t want or have patience to see capitalism reach its peak naturally. But now we are starting to see what he was correctly predicting.

If you build enough scale subscription services work out very profitable for providers and consumers. It saves consumers money in the long run so they have more savings to invest in other things that benefit the economy and the environment. That’s the goal, but there are always bumps in the road during the journey.

This is interesting but I think the gaming experience is much better on a console. Apple should work on a controller to combat PS4 and XBOX. I think the VR project will have Apple develop something to rival the consoles.

Games are horrible on iOS. Most if not all the big developers over time stop updating their apps. It’s just not worth it for them.

Even with the nimbus controller the games are not nearly is fun as on a console imo.

Has anyone actually looked in the iPad App Store for a solid game lately ? There are none/
If Apple wants to get serious about gaming;

1. Make their own controller
2. Invest in original first-party games

None of these mobile games are as fun as PC gaming to me.
Ever since I got a Switch about a year ago, I haven’t downloaded or played a single iOS game. Physical controls + portability + great game catalog FTW. It’s nice that iOS devices are capable of running some decent games but I don’t think I’ll ever use them again for anything more that solitaire or things like that. And I’m certainly not paying a subscription for that.

There's the newly announced Google Stadia that will put nails in the coffin for mobile gaming apps.

Although it's an interesting prospect, it's highly likely that, in keeping with Google's well deserved reputation, Stadia is already in the process of being discontinued... even before it has been released.:D Google has a habit of shuttering projects so those coffin nails will probably be needed for Stadia before they're needed for mobile gaming apps.;)

Wow I’m so confused. Reading this thread it’s like Apple Games are a failure, but App Store revenue continues to soar. According to some of the same people the only thing selling on the App Store is Games so it irrelevant. How can it be both? There seems to be a huge market of App Gamers they Apple sells too.

People want "Free to play" and the industry needs money and eyeballs and thumbs.
So, to save the App Store because nobody wants to have expensive games they cannot preview, or pesky In-App purchases this is Apples solution.
Let people pay, hope the initial try-everything period wears off quickly.
After that, it's basically free money.

but App Store revenue continues to soar.
The gaming industry disagrees and needs more and more money for shareholders.
That is the issue.

"No more games in the App store unless we see $$$"

85% of what AAPL makes in the iOS App Store comes from Games.

10% from streaming media content "sub" apps.

And the other 5% from everything else.

IMO, top-tier Games are doing just fine.

What isn't working is the "everything else" category !

Plus, the NON-top-tier Games.

If AAPL focuses on that, I'm ALL for it !
