This was my thoughts as well, that there doesn't need to be a further update for the iMac. The current iMac already uses an overclocked Santa Rosa platform that brings 1066MHz FSB and DDR2-800, which is the majority of the benefits of Montevina. The iMac also doesn't need an IGP chipset. There really isn't a pressing need for an immediate update.

Dual processor Nehalem Xeons aren't going to be available until Q1 anyways for the Mac Pro. And the Mac Mini is constantly waffling in its viability. Just like there was a specific iPod event and then a dedicated notebook event, it'll make sense for Apple to have an official dedicated desktop event early next year to incorporate the refreshed iMac and Mac Pro and probably a redesigned Mac Mini or a new replacement product. This may be at Macworld if Snow Leopard doesn't take up all the time, but will probably be later since I don't think the Xeon/Mac Pro will be ready by then. Hopefully, Apple takes the time to plan for the incorporation of next-generation GPUs.

how long usually between a product being released at MacWorld and when it's available to buy? Looking to switch from Vista to an iMac, but don't really want to wait three months, especially if the update won't be anything major.

happy

Well, very happy about this news.

That mean instead of a minor update of the iMac we can expect a major update at MacWorld.

Also, a LCD or Plasma TV with the AppleTV integrated. Wow that would be amazing:)

Quite true, and the new chips are not yet available for the mac pro, either. But the mini... the mini is a disgrace as it is now. It was literally outdated the day it was released (the imacs were updated to santa rosa that day, and the mini stayed on the napa chipset), and that was about 14 months ago. And here we are today, same 2GB RAM limit, same ridiculous graphics (GMA 950 was underpowered when it was chosen for the first macbook in may 2006!!), same price.

Those of you who know my posts know that I'm not one to jump on the apple-bashing bandwagon that seems so popular on this site these days. I'm pretty much happy after every update. But this is really too much. They're seriously going to let the mini sit as-is for another 2 months, at least? All they need to do is slap macbook innards in to the current case and it would be a wonderful machine. As it is, it's so far overpriced and so far underpowered that I can't possibly recommend it to anyone. What a joke.

Or so it's at Macworld
or in the lead up to Macworld.

Apple did a release a week last year between new year and the keynote right?

Apple is likey waiting for coreI7 for sever / workstation to update the mac pro

Apple is likey waiting for coreI7 sever / workstation to update the mac pro and that was push back a little bit.

The Mac mini can recognize 3GB of memory. You can get 2GB modules from Other World Computing.

People buying Mac mini's are mostly only reading e-mail and visiting web sites. Not high end gaming. The graphics are more than enough.

Exactly. I dont' see why more people haven't speculated on this. I think our chances of seeing the mythical xMac are greater than ever... The only significant "hole" remaining in Apple's lineup is the Mini. I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised come January. I mean seriously, what else is there to announce?

Thats what I'm thinking, too. Macworld is the 25th anniversary of the Mac. In some ways, the mini is kind of like the first mac, simple, friendly, affordable (?.. I guess the original mac was really not so affordable at $2495.)

On the other hand, I have absolutely no idea what to expect. Come on, Apple, surprise me!

I have another option.

Maybe Apple was suppose to release a new iMac this November without a firewire port but with all the criticism they receive they need to postponed the release to ad the firewire port on the new model to avoid another wave of criticism.:p

This sucks... we will be buying an iMac (for our church) in the next month, and I was hoping to get the upgraded hardware. This really sucks because the last time I bought an iMac (the one I am using right now) I had to buy it for a job, and I bought it two months before the Core Duos came out... turns out the job fell though, and I could have waited... now it is happening all over again.

Maybe, but I think that is wishful thinking.

Well, that tears it. 18.4", Blue Ray equipped, 2.8 GHz dual core having, 8 Gigs of RAM sporting, 640 Gig 7200 rpm hard drive, high definition playing Sony Vaio AW series, here I come.

Yes, that's all people buying minis are doing... BECAUSE apple hasn't given the mini the power to do much more. Make it a more capable machine and people would use it for more.

There's something preventing you from going to the Apple Store and buying a current Mac mini for your mom?

They suddenly stopped working?

Oh fer frig's sake!

That attitude would make a lot of sense for any normal product in a normal product cycle, but the Mini hasn't been updated in OVER A @#$%&* YEAR at this point. It isn't worth what Apple's charging for it. There is a certain point where concern for new products coming out is simply superseded by the fact that the machine is so outdated that it's a rip-off. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy a Mac Mini right now and Apple ought to be embarrassed to be asking $600-800 for it.

And we wonder why Apple can't quite shake that image of being overpriced. That's why.

The fourth quarter to '08 is goin' down the tubes...

Is Apple getting too comfortable with their/our billions in the bank? With the economy in the tank, problems with iPhone part deux and no new MP in nearly a year, I would have thought they'd bring something strong for the holidays...not so much. At this point, I guess an extra 30 days on mobileme is too much to ask for. Merry friggin Xmas!

..........MacBook Air?

But maybe at MW09 do you think they will add in the MacBook Air trackpad update and black around screen? Look on the apple website... the Air looks really out of place next to the other computers and the LCD. Seriously, I bet they will add this in--- But I am going for the dive and picking up a MBA before Christmas. :D

I don't see how you can follow an Apple rumor site and still expect to be surprised. So this is where all the "what a disappointing keynote!" posts come from. A phrase comes to mind....something about having cake, and eating it... ;)

Anyway, pretty solid lineup as is. Can't wait for the MWSF rumors to start flowing in. Also, does anyone else think it unlikely that Steve will devote most of the keynote to Snow Leopard? Other than saying "it's more stable", the rest is just technical mumbo jumbo that an average consumer won't care much about. Usually that type of stuff is reserved for WWDC. I suspect they are going to fill MWSF with something else....
