There's something preventing you from going to the Apple Store and buying a current Mac mini for your mom?

They suddenly stopped working?

With Apple products in particular, unless they receive an interim price drop, they become progressively poorer value for money the longer they have been out. Therefore buying a Mac Mini now, when something far better could be coming out very soon, would be considered a waste of money for most people. A Mac Mini bought now is likely to become obsolete a whole year before a model released in January would. While there will always be something better around the corner, in the tech industry a product like a computer that has not updated for more than a year is definitely good reason for waiting.

Yep

So I guess Apple made it clear. Buy a hackintosh.

It is time, and that's just what I did.

As someone mentioned, the Mini's specs (although quite outdated) are still more than sufficient for casual browsing, email, itunes, etc. But Apple's price is so far removed from reality that I don't know why anyone would buy one today.

My Hackintosh is a simple eMachines 3650 Walmart special that cost $299. It doesn't get much lower than this. But it performs much better than my Intel Mac did (which I gave to my mother to convert her).

The Hackintosh works well because it is very close internally to being a real mini (intel chipset, 950 graphics). It has a DVD burner which should of be standard on all computers in 2006, let alone 2008 (or 2009). It uses a standard SATA 160 gig HDD which is simple to upgrade or replace as is the RAM. And hey, it even comes with a keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

All this for hundreds less than the stripped down and hardly expandable mini....

For serious work, I still turn to my MacBook or iMac, but for sagging off in the evening and surfing the web, the Hackintosh is my main machine (even with the Acer 24" monitor, another gig of RAM, and the addition of a 500 Gig HDD, it is still cheaper than what Apple is asking for a mini)....

Come on Apple. All computers under $500 are not "junk". And the fact that you "don't know how to make them" says more about Apple than the rest of the industry....

Here's the new scoop

Here's the new scoop, let's start posting this once a week now:

According to anonymous sources Apple product updates are imminent in January. Sources confirm that updates include new Intel chips, new iLife and iWork, as well as 32 gig iPhone.

I like the way Apple has actually come out to say nothing will be coming out. Could be a sign of a more relaxed Apple when it comes to updates?

Have to admit, it's taken the fun out of the guessing and waiting game. However, it does mean we can save ourselves from the numerous "New iMac spec" threads that occur.

They probably won't upgrade the Mini because the Dell Studio offers little competition. I went to BB and they had one. It's ugly and big compared to the mini. It has more features but that's about it. I'm just going to get a MSI Wind and put OSX on that and call it good.

I really love Macs but Apple is making it harder by the day to justify my feelings towards their products. If you want decent performance you simply have to go for a Mac Pro, there is no other alternative and then we are talking serious overkill (at least in price). iMacs of today are simply not worth their price tag - yesterdays perfromance for the premium of tomorrows technology.

Where is the Medium size for those of us who enjoys Mac but also want performance? That would be a serious gap filler.

Gotta agree with this. If Apple can't bother to at least keep their models up to date, then why bother?

Come on dude...the current imac is only 7 months old. Technology hasnt surpassed this machine enough to warrant an update. T

It needs a gfx card update. Was hoping to get my wife one for christmas but even the top end model has a card that's slower than her current year old desktop machine - and she's complaining about framerates on that!

The MBP was only refreshed 8 months ago so the time is pretty irrelevant.

OTOH A Mac Mini with a good gfx card would be absolutely perfect for her, which is probably why Apple will never produce one like that.. Who would buy an imac if the mini was up to spec?

here's what I want to buy in January:
Mac MiniTV
2.1 or 2.5GHz Penryn core 2 duo cpu
Case like the appletv but taller, with a panel on the bottom removeable with 4 screws to access dual 2.5" laptop bay and ram slots.
mini displayport and hdmi port
nvidia 9300 based motherboard
gigabit lan, 802.11n wifi, analog stereo out that doubles as optical out with 7.1 lpcm sound
option: minipcie tv tuner $99
option2: Apple Prestige Remote w/ slider qwerty and extra buttons $99
Front Row Gen 3 based on xbmc with eyetv-like tv tuning added in

starting price $699 to $1099 with all options

blue ray and then some....

I think we'll see blue ray across the desktop line in MW '09 and SJ releasing the 17" and a 10-11" netbook at MW 2009, a bit like the 17" and 12" PB release that I still remember - big AND tiny, do anyone still remember that year? 2003 or 2002?

Anyway that's why no more news for the reminder of the year...

Why does this forum erupt in hysteria every time the store goes down? Does it ever pan out to be true? Seems silly, especially when some stores (i.e. UK) are still up . . .

Does it ever pan out to be true? Well almost every time the store goes down, new products are released. It's certainly has more merit than getting excited about speculation from an anonymous source i.e. the source of half of the rumours that get talked about on this site.

I'm happy there are no new minis. It means that I've had the latest MacMini for over a year, while my MacBook has been outdated thrice in a similar timeframe!

I needed new iMac more than anyone

I know that everyone says that his wish is the strongest. But I really needed that new iMac.

I didn't need MacMini or a second Mac. I needed my first iMac and I needed it to be new one with new Nvidia and LED display for the work. I saved for it so long. My 17' CRT Samsung SyncMaster screws all colors but I hoped that I will get iMac at last and kept my emotions but now I wanna scream about it as it is the worst thing I thoght.

Why don't update imacs now and minis and other inventions like tablets etc leave for January.

In the new MacBook video, they made such a big deal about the MacBook having all the essential components and if you didn't need anything it isn't there (like Firewire?)

BUT the whole reason i switched to Mac is because I highly appreciated that they provided you everything you'd need even though you didn't think you'd need it.

AND I was also smitten by Target Mode.

NOW Apple is becoming more and more like a PC maker. cutting corners.

I don't think they'll remove Firewire from the iMac, because the iMac is essentially like the MBP which still has FW800.

I think they'll remove Firewire from the Mac Mini though, because the Mac Mini is essentially like the MB, IF they decide to continue making them.

For those that need Firewire in something more portable than the current MBP, they have the $999 white MacBook.

We should now all turn to PsyStar. They seem to be our only hope....

So this G4 is going to have to keep on going a bit longer...

It really is a shame because it's getting closer to the stage that I will need a new desktop and I was hoping to get a new iMac in that time. However, I'm certainly not going to spend that amount of money on something which is getting quite 'old' by technology's standards, especially when a new one could be released just after the holidays. Oh well, back to waiting.

at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ you can let 'em know directly what you think about (not) upgrading the mac mini, the imac and its glossy screen, about killing firewire and so on!

I already have, twice this year, left feedback about the Mini. Telling them the money's already theirs, just awaiting the specs being somewhat more up to date.

I'm close to giving up, only there actually isn't anything else on the market (any OS) that suits both what I need and what I can justify spending on[*]. So I'm left waiting until something appears that I can at least crowbar past my budget.

[*]A couple of extra hundred on a screen I don't want and flat-out don't require just doesn't work.

Yep looks like I shall be using my iBook a bit longer now. I am ready to order a new iMac but shall hold out, unless there are some good deals in the refurb section.

I didn't think Apple was going to release any new products until at least Macworld SF 2009.

I expect Apple to release updated Mac Pro desktops, and we may see the next-generation iMac there, too (though I think Apple won't release the new iMacs until early spring 2009).

It would have been best if Apple hadn't said anything at all. This pretty much says "don't buy from Apple this holiday season."

Not necessarily, and I guess that's the problems from our point of view.

For people who need a machine ASAP, and are umming and erring on the off-chance of an update, it's actually saying 'You might as well buy now, as you won't run the risk of buying in early November only to see a replacement item in the stores the next day.'.
It basically forces the undecided to make a decision one way or the other, but that will actually encourage some people to actually buy sooner rather than later.
(For example, they know they can buy a Christmas present now sure in the knowledge that it won't be supeceded between purchase and Christmas Day itself.[*])

It does, however, totally suck for those of us who need a machine now but having something updated is more important. As it means we either wait, or run the risk of old kit keeling over before a decent replacement.

[*] By mid-January, maybe. But at least the present won't be out-versioned the day it's given.
