Apple was expected to receive an exemption from the rule, earning a recommendation from country's Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, but the ministry of finance has decided Apple's products do not fall into the cutting-edge technology category.

A source told Reuters Apple did not provide enough material to justify the exemption."They did ask for a waiver but didn't provide any material on record to justify it. The decision was taken only after a thorough examination of their application," the source said.
They are saying Apple did not do their homework. Not that they do not qualify. This sounds a whole bunch like a recent state department email spat when it comes to language.

16 GB base storage on iPhones, lack of 4K support on Apple TV, and a Mac Pro that hasn't been updated since 2013. I wouldn't call that cutting-edge either to be honest.

haha having visited 8-10 times and having family there trust me .0001% of population is sitting on 4k tv's and high end Mac Pros........no one is using that tech over there......this has nothing to do with tech and everything having to do with local politics....if you don't know about how Indian political system works you can't understand whats really going on

Politics as usual, but if Tim really believes India is the next China, then he should accelerate plans to build a factory there and be done with it.

That said, focusing on manufacturing jobs seems short-sighted. Those jobs are being taken over by robots.

Apple is pouring hundred of millions into India to create more sustainable jobs by creating education centers for developers and an R&D facility for Apple Maps... opening retail operations would help construction companies and create retail jobs which IMO is preferable to assembly line work and won't be replaced by androids anytime soon.

This is one of those laws that I feel like they mean well but is tough. Apple would need workers in India to build and staff the stores. So you're creating jobs that way, not manufacturing jobs, but they are jobs. So do you risk a company like Apple deciding not to open retail stores, thus not adding any jobs, just to grow manufacturing/production jobs?

I'm not saying Apple doesn't have the money to do it, just another logistical hurdle to deal with when making a product.

In 2015, India was ranked 76th out of 175 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index, compared to its neighbors Bhutan (30th), Bangladesh (145th), Myanmar (156th), China (100th), Nepal (126th), Pakistan (126th) and Sri Lanka (85th). This is the second least corruption rank for India in the whole of South Asia.[5] In 2013, India was ranked 94th out of 175 countries.[6] In 2016, India was ranked 76th out of 168 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index[7]

Well, apparently "bribes" and "corruption" comments are already on the top.
But anyway, the newer government is actually reducing it but who cares about facts when you can throw a hissy fit?

You do sound like a very trustable source, like absolutely legit. Totally.

India is just taking advantage of Apple, if Apple was not a such high profile company, the exemption will be granted immediately, that' why it's better doing business in China, even with Chinese ****** policies, Apple is still making money from China

Well it is the entire store. cases, wires, battery packs, covers... do not think any of that is cutting edge. Also, Macs are running old tech at this point.

Tim's trip to India didn't pay off then, lol.
This. So much this.

I think Apple got a bit complacent. They thought they would coast through by announcing investment in Maps, possible factories etc in India but then they (according to the minister) failed to provide a lot of justification for why their products are 'cutting edge'?

They thought sending Tim to India and making some announcements would win them over, seems as though they were too complacent in my view.

Paying elected officials to be able to speak to them, get them to do their job as defined, etc., is called bribes in most of the world.

In the USA, the lawyer/politicians have re-written the rule to allow such bribes - a.k.a lobbying. Or more correctly, the politicians' re-election or retirement fund.

How do you think most of the jobs that moved away from the USA to Chine, Taiwan, Pakistan, etc., did so over the last 4 decades or so?

If an app developer wants to make money through the AppStore, they gotta play by Apple's rules (and arbitrariness).

If Apple wants to make money (directly) through the Indian market, they gotta play by India's rules.

So what's the problem here? Every party tries to protect his very own eco system, regardless of the actual customers' interests.

This sounds REMARKABLY similar to how Apple demands 30% of your income if you want your app in their bright and shiny App Store.

But sure, everyone complain about it as if India invented something brand new out of thin air.

A 30% overhead for getting my app out to millions of users is cheap and much lower that other retail distribution systems. Running the app store is very labor intensive and not even a profit center for Apple.

Previous app stores in the Palm and Newton days were taking at much as 50% to 75% of the revenue stream of all apps sold via their portal. One even forbid the developer to have developer contact info inside any app sold in their portal.

Apple knows third party apps sells their hardware. Thus the app store is a loss lead for their hardware margins.
