I have the opportunity to buy a Macbook today. But seeing as the new ones are coming out in about a month, should I wait for them? or just go ahead and by the Macbook today? I'm in school now and a laptop would really help. I also don't know if I can wait that long haha. It seems like a lifetime for me because I've been wanting a Macbook for about 2+ years now, and my dad always told me that " when you get into college..etc" and I'm here now so... What would your advice be?
Thanks in advance.

wait.

they ARE coming. i was told they were supposed to launch Sept, but were delayed, but that Oct is confirmed. new chips/new enclosures. that's worth waiting a few weeks for. you'd be REALLY bummed if by the time you got to school you had outdated hardware.

Of course they're coming eventually, at some point.

Who told you that? Someone who really has no real knowledge, like an Apple store employee?

Of course there'll be new chipsets.

We're already at school.

I don't think the second level macbook will be 2.26, because the current one is 2.4. I'd say it makes more sense to make the entry level 2.26, then the next two 2.4, like it is currently. That also should push more people to buy the 2nd level, LIKE they always try to do.

i used to work for apple (cupertino, not a store). i'll leave it at that.

check back in a month & see how wrong i am. the pros will have black keyboards, a more sleek, air-like case, a more iphone-looking display, new monitors w/ all new cases that look more iphone-like also.

And MB?

With new monitors you mean Cinema Displays, right ?

I am really looking forward to those - can't wait. I need one. Well I can wait and I will.

That the Macbook Pro will have a black keyboard is something I personally really don't like. I love the current keyboard. I have to buy a new Computer for my wife because she is using an iBook G4 that is getting a little bit old. Its still quite good but my son destroyed the keyboard and the battery is dead. She would be ok with a Macbook but can't stand the glossy display like me. The Macbook Pro is the only option for her. On the other hand - she really likes the current keyboard and if the new one has a black keyboard it could be that I have to order a refurbised model.

Have a Blu-ray drive included with one of the models, and a reasonable price (sub $2000) and Apple might have a convert.

What about the MacBook?

If the machine could take the extra heat, I do think it would be reasonable for Apple to add the quad-core to the 17" model.

It would be reasonable,I would say.

I know more that few production houses that use MPs and 17"s as location machines when shooting HD materiel. Yes,they are "niche" clienté, but they are as well the users that use the machines proper.

And to that lot you can add producers, composers, recorders,TV crews, photographers etc ad nauseaum wich would steal the computer if able.

And they are not the clientee who asks "how much does it cost?" either.

So,there is a market. Just hopefully apple gets the package together for us to enjoy.

* Given the price difference between the SL 1.60GHz ($284) and the SL 1.86GHz ($316), Apple would be better off using only the 1.86GHz cpu in the MBA (economy of scale).
Common... we all know that it usually works the other way round at Apple, don't we? ;)

They are will use the 1.60 GHz part for economies of scale. Aditionally they'll offer the 1,86 GHz version - but only at a substantial premium, of course. Which will be more than they pay Intel for the faster parts (Sure, maybe I'm wrong... just to illustrate the general point)

Isn't the price of the quad-core like $851 (in lots of 1000)? That would add quite a premium to the cost of the system, and I don't believe we would see much performance gain at least until Snow Leopard's optimizations.

Yes, moving to quad core would add around $300 (Q9100) to $500 (QX9300) to the price of the 2.6GHz option, which is why I think it would be BTO if it was offered.

I wish Steve would get over this obsession with "thinner." Man, gain some weight and give us a real computer!

"1989 NeXT Cube... 2000 G4 Cube... And now 2009 Cube^3(hyper-cube). This multi-dimensional cube that actually folds into itself is insanely great!

"Look how thin it is. For some time now we've been secretly directing our large cash surplus toward working with CERN and their Large Hadron Collider team. This work has paid off with new hyper-dimensional technology for the ultimate Apple experience.

"Storage is via virtual particle/anti-particle pairing that takes up no space at all!
Isn't that amazing?...

"Notice how the Apple logo flashes in and out of existence. It blurs the boundary that used to exist between the Mac Book Air and desktops. It's like it's not really there at all."

Here is the rundown, what I think is likely (that we may see):

MacBook:

Complete product revamp, do away with black/white plastics in case design, laptop takes on much slimmer trimmed down look like MacBook Air. Remains econonomical and low prices, possibly still coming in two color options (sleek black aluminum and silver or possibly white anodized aluminum)** -- or "nanochromatic" in 9 or 10 colors, see below...

Possibility of refresh to displays, do away with 13.3" glossy-style screens and put larger 15.2" HD style displays on MacBook Line (*maybe unlikely due to keeping MacBooks small and compact, but possible. Realize, Dell uses 15.4" displays on their low-end laptops, and they sell for less than Apple's 13.3" consumer option)

SSD will not be an option on MacBook -- too pricey -- we will see SSD options on MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines

Possibility of backlit keyboard integrated on MacBook*

Thinner, lighter.

*possible option note: Apple introducing MacBooks "nanochromatic" in 9 or 10 colors, taking on the color scheme and options the new iPod nano line, MacBooks would come in each color, also in black and silver, and would be anodized aluminum. This would be uber-cool and an instant hit. Apple has neglected multi-color Macs since the clamshell iBook line and the original iMacs. These machines were instant hits, and really captured the hearts of Mac fans and users alike. **Again, don't count this one out. I think it may happen.

Processor-wise, looking at minor bumps, 2.4GHz to 2.6GHz consumer level, Montevina-based, dual-core.

MacBook Air:

I predict things will almost stay *exactly* the same with the Air, in terms of looks and case design, will keep same aluminum thin case, possibly offer black as a color option. 128GB SSD will become new option on the line. See minor processor bumps (realize it's a smaller specialized chip), upper end going to 2.1GHz or 2.2Ghz, into model with 80GB GD and 1.8GHz.

MacBook Pro:

Sleek revamp of case design, slimmed down, adding elements of iMac glass, black, and aluminum. SSD drive option available (128GB) but will be pricey BTO option. Blu-Ray makes intro on MacBook Pro as first machine (as did DVD on the PowerBook G3). Possibility of improvements to displays, change of resolution to HD-style aspect format. I doubt 19" displays (as I speculated earlier) will be introduced. 17" @ 1920x1080 will make intro. Improved battery technology possible. MacBook Pro will still retain full arsenal of ports (versus MacBook Air being port-lacking) but will take on a slimmer look and feel. Matte displays will still be an option :)

Oh yeah, "and one more thing..."
QUAD CORE :)

--------------------------------------
Okay, I think that sums it up. Those are just my "predictions" -- just predictions, that's all. Not hopes or wishes but educated guesses of possible technologies that I firmly believe will eventually make it to the portable line up. I could be wayyyy off, or I could be spot on. Who knows. It will take at least a couple months to find out!

yup.

What about the MacBook?

honestly, i haven't heard anything about it b/c i've only been interested in the pro. but if i hear something, i'll post.

actually, i take that back, i'm interested in the macbook for my mother. her old G3 ibook is getting long in the tooth. i'll see what i can find out...

Anything regarding a possible tablet device, my friend?

Both my laptop and desktop are on eBay right now. I'm trying to get enough so that I can purchase an Apple notebook for use as my main system, and a secondary, more mobile device, yet to be decided. If they came out with a tablet, it'd be a no-brainer, provided that the price is right.

Let's look at this another way. Given a launch date of 10-14-08 and the best actually "available" hardware from Intel et al (CPU, HD, RAM supported by the CPU architecture, display size/resolution and Graphics card) what is the best we could expect for the MacBook Pro? This would not include chip sets or drives not yet available within the Apple shipping/availability window but could include CTO/BTO.
I'm staying conservative here.
  • 2.4/2.53/2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2.8 GHz BTO
  • 2 GB DDR3 RAM, up to 8 GB
  • 250/300/300 GB HD, up to 500 GB
  • Midrange 9**0 / HD 3**0 GPU
  • DVD burner, no Blu-ray
  • $1999/$2499/$2799

Is the Montevina based CPU more likely than a Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core mobile processor that runs at a frequency of 2.53GHz and includes 12M bytes of L2 cache? Thinking that the MacBook Pro is already behind the curve versus the HP 8730W and Lenovo W700. Is there a new CPU that is going to top the Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core mobile in October?
It'll always be behind the curve as long as Apple wants to keep the MacBook Pro at most 1" thick.
