"1989 NeXT Cube... 2000 G4 Cube... And now 2009 Cube^3(hyper-cube). This multi-dimensional cube that actually folds into itself is insanely great!

Funnin' aside, I'm thinking some computing device that really does blur the boundary between desktop and laptop. If I knew what it was going to be I'd be the billionaire.

Apple does , remember the patent for the iMac with docking portable a while back ?

Here is the rundown, what I think is likely (that we may see):

...... etc etc etc......

Oh yeah, "and one more thing..."
QUAD CORE :)

--------------------------------------
Okay, I think that sums it up. Those are just my "predictions" -- just predictions, that's all. Not hopes or wishes but educated guesses of possible technologies that I firmly believe will eventually make it to the portable line up. I could be wayyyy off, or I could be spot on. Who knows. It will take at least a couple months to find out!

By the time I got to the end of that I had honestly forgotten I was only reading that on MacRumors and that it wasn't true!

New commercial for Mac Mini

I know "Get a MAC" adds are meant to highlight OS X and not any particular piece of hardware, but I couldn't resist...

[New Commercial]

PC is seen wearing boxers, a tank-top undershirt, dress socks and shoes.

Mac is wearing a very stylish black on black suit with open collar (very GQ).

Mac: "Hi I'm a Mac"

PC: <sighs>"and I'm a PC"

Mac: "Hey PC, what's up with your new look?"

PC: "I'll tell you what's up. With the new Mac Mini, people can take the keyboard, monitor and other components of their current computers, and use them to create a powerful, value priced Mac desktop."

Mac: <sheepishly> "Oh I see."

PC: "Oh you see! What you see is what's left after that happens, just a cold and lonely box, just waiting to be put on a shelf, forgotten forever."

Mac: "Well PC, look on the bright side."

PC: "What bright side."

Mac: <smooths suit jacket> "I make these parts look good."

PC: <turns and walks away>

End

By the time I got to the end of that I had honestly forgotten I was only reading that on MacRumors and that it wasn't true!

That is cracking me up. That bit was my only injection of actual "wish" and not "prediction" -- the rest it my educated prediction. The Quad-core (for Oct. release) is only a wish, I don't think that will (actually) happen by that time.

here's something which i'm not sure has been suggested on here but i think would be great....

folks are talking about the possibility of having macbooks in an array of different anodized aluminium colours (like the current nanos) which personally i would hate....however, what would be cool is black or silver aluminium macbook (still 13.3 pls!!..if i wanted bigger i'd go for a pro!) with backlit keyboard and the apple logo on the outer casing that lights up could change through a gazillion different colours rather than being just white and bright!....what do you think??:D

I don't know...

I mean, a gazillion sure is a lot..

I'm just rooting for silver and anodized black.

Has anyone noticed how many lower priced, blu-ray compatible new laptops have come out in recent weeks? Sony rolled out a slew of them this week.

Does it ever catch up with Apple that they have been way too long wthout an update?

...or do the Apple fans just keep walking into Apple stores like the zombies on the 1984 Ad and plunk down their credit cards? Regardless of the fact that other laptops have better specs for far cheaper prices?

By the way, I have read the Ferrari comparison, and while I agree that Jonathan Ive has done his job masterfully, lets be honest the engine under the hood is components that all Laptop manufacturers use.

If they are going to introduce BluRay, don't expect full HD playback until the enable secure path - which will probably appear in 10.6 (if they do go with BluRay).

Apple may have a relationship, but the studios are happy to play hard ball if it suits their misguided agenda.

Maybe Apple is purposely not including Blu-ray for whatever reason.

Blu-ray is not a concern for me. Also, hardware is only half the story.

Or Apple might just enable Blu-ray data capabilities.

QUOTE: Beric . . .

Sounds great.

Perhaps prices that are actually competitive this time around, instead of being at twice the price for similar specs of other PC notebooks? The fact that I can equal the $2700 17-inch MBP's specs with an HP for $1300 is kinda sad.

Agree fully. I have an iMac 24" and a Mac-Mini, both of which were reasonably good values.

In the notebook market, however, Apple has fallen far behind in the price versus performance/features category. I have a HP notebook running Vista (yeah, I know). It works exceptionally well, and it cost $600. I am concerned that Apple will lose out in this lucrative market unless they address the price issue . . . . and SOON.

Sony needs to push Blu-ray adoption, so they are willing to take a hit in margins to put in a drive. HP is also a major Blu-ray backer, so they too want to push adoption.

And Sony's drives are are made by Sony, so the cost will be lower then what Apple would be paying so whatever margin hit Sony is taking, it would be even worse for Apple...

Why is it the other manufacturers already have blu-ray playback? Why would Apple be unable to deliver?

I think my point is not that Apple cant charge a premium for their product, but currently they are charging about double what other manufacturers charge for similar configured computers. The component costs have got to be similar for the big manufacturers, right.

Reasonable Price points might be:

Macbook Mini 9 inch (Eeepc like) Starting at $500 topping out at $799 (atom processor, SSD storage, etc.) - Maybe this product could be Apples tablet with multi-touch input - now that would be 'one more thing'

Macbook 13 inch Starting at $799 topping out at $999 (integrated graphics)

Maybe a Macbook 15 inch Starting at $999 topping out at $1499 (integrated graphics)

Macbook Pro 16 inch starting at $1499 topping out at $1999 (dedicated graphics, HD, Blu-ray)

Macbook Air starting at $1499 topping out at $1999

Macbook Pro 18 inch Starting at $1999 topping out at $2499 (full blown performance Desktop replacement)

That would represent choice, at a price premium, but reasonable for most consumers.

Lastly, if Apple does make notebook announcements in October, what does that leave for Macworld?

Have they?

I mean... ultimately it all depends on their sales, right? And the majority of their sales won't come from vocal, impatient fanboys and / or enthusiasts like you and me (who are discussing these matters in internet forums) but rather from less technologically inclined people.

If they are going to introduce BluRay, don't expect full HD playback until the enable secure path - which will probably appear in 10.6
I wouldn't expect them to introduce BluRay until they have the secured path thing sorted out. Blu-ray means "high definition home video" in most people's minds. Offering and advertising these drives without a means of (encrypted) Blu-ray playback would create quite a negative effect, marketing-wise. On the other hand, I cannot imagine them introducing Blu-ray without some public ballyhoo.

Apple's notebooks are 7 months old. PC notebooks are very recent (Montevina). With next month's redesign I would expect the price gap to go down considerably.

  • Cinema Displays (rumored)
  • iLife '09 and iWork '09
  • ≈12" Mac tablet
  • ≈5.5" iPhone OS mini-tablet
  • iPhone
  • Apple tv
  • Apple home server
  • Snow Leopard preview

Well put - I would agree with some of those points.

Has Apple ever released a major new computer a few months before MacWorld? I can see them putting out lesser gadgets in time for the holiday buying season, but don't they usually hold off on the computers themselves until MacWorld? (Aside from refreshes, of course.)

Now theres something I'd buy. Current MBP base model is way to much, needs to come down a little

Doesnt matter. they want to be there for the holiday season..

Depends on what you mean by "major new computer" and "refresh." The Macbooks were updated in November 2006 and November 2007.

I wouldn't be so sure. I just did a pretty thorough search on everymac.com and couldn't find anything beyond a refresh happening with computers (not lesser gadgets) a few months or less before MacWorld.

I think the reasoning would be that most people don't buy new computers simply because it's the holiday season (as opposed to something less expensive, like an iPod). And if they are intending to give such a generous gift as a computer, they'll go ahead and buy the current model, even if it's a bit long in the tooth, because they need that gift to give, after all.

There's a reason why MacWorld comes when it does, AFTER the holiday season. That's the time when companies need to get people to open their wallets yet again; they need good first quarter profits. At this point, consumers have already dumped a bunch of money into gifts and will only be persuaded to spend even more money if some whizbang new thing comes out that they simply must have. So MacWorld is in January, and the whizbang new things get announced then, when Apple can best leverage them into additional profits.

iMac (iSight with minor case refresh), Power Mac G5 Quad, PowerBook G4 (high-res, DL SuperDrive) in 2005, and the iBook G4 in 2003.

They aren't as big as redesigns, but are more significant than the average speed bump.

Apple generally releases new computers at MWSF lately. Aside from the first Intel Macs, we haven't seen a Mac update/redesign at MWSF since 2003.

Yeah, I think this list proves my point. I'm going to be very surprised if a Mac tablet computer gets announced before MWSF. And even a major case redesign is highly unlikely. If they had some major MB or MBP case redesign ready this close to MWSF, they would go ahead and wait for January. No major case redesigns that I can find happened within a few months of MacWorld.
