I didn't bother to read through all of the replies, but I just wanted to say that the MacBook is changing and will never have an aluminum case.

The MacBook Pro will be changing by September. I for one hope they dump aluminum because it really does fold up like foil. However, I hear that the MacBook Air is much more durable.

i dont like the tapered design as much personally. and as for my needs, i dont need it till classes start in september so i may wait a few months after they come out see if any problems get ironed out. it will be sooo tough to wait though.

Hopefully, Apple takes this opportunity to improve the MacBook Pro's reliability and serviceability. We have seen a large number of failures with recent PowerBook G4's and MacBook Pro's and are worried by the trend. Apple must improve quality and durability for the newer models.

Exactly! I hope they don't screw up this one. I think Apple is getting better though since the new Macbook air looks pretty solid hardware-wise.

I really hope the matte black border around the screen. I can only think of the wasted space and a non neutral reference point for photoshoppers it will create

Mockups please!

Price^

everyone is asking whether the prices will go up but, ive never seen a price increase from apple except for a hardware upgrade that isnt standard

Nice look

Mockup of what I think a MacBook Pro 15" may look like based on the iMac design.

That looks very nice, WinMacLin. The bezel isn't too large. I think the Al tone could be a bit darker to offset the black better. The MBP badge also I think will be more similar to its current state. I also wish the drive would be side loading, but probably not due to space.

here' my mockup from a while ago. (sorry for another post but i cant edit posts and then add attachments)

the first mockup is mine. the second one was just so sexy i had to share. it was made by 'bananas' and posted at this thread:

I really hope this new one comes out in June. I'm buying one in June, but I won't have a chance to buy it until September, but I'll need it in July. I really hope Apple updates this in June.

Your buying one in june but won't have a chance to buy it until September? lol I hope it comes out June too but I doubt it. Possibly an announcement for them will come in June...Either way I'm so happy the next revision will have a new look I've been holding off buying one until redesign.

well probably not because it said next june/july so that would be nice but doubtful

I really prefer the look of current MBPs to MBA's....I played with the latter and found it to be a bit too toy-like for me. The MBP looks masculine and professional! :)

The only other materials i would prefer over aluminum would be carbon fiber!!! It's both STRONGER and STURDIER at the same time....what are the chances of having new carbon-fiber MBP's???

I don't know what people are complaining about regarding MBPs looking old....you can walk into Design Within Reach and still see furniture pieces designed in the 20s or 50s being sold at a 10X premium over IKEA pieces (whose designs change quite often)....also most German cars have design cycles of at least 8 years, while UK ones have design cycles over 12 years...

classics are classics, period! :)

Took my faulty Macbook Pro Penryn back to the store for exchange today. Could have got a refund and simply used my old Powerbook for a few months til the (supposed) new Macbook Pro comes out.
But I did nothing of the sort. I was more than pleased to take a replacement, and it seems to be fine so far.
I now expect this computer to last me three years at least. That's three years with the last edition of an absolute classic design – one that will surely serve my purposes just as well as any updated version during that time.
The new design will come out and I'll be able to bide my time while everyone on here groans about the teething problems for at least one year and then spends the following year predicting another "new" design.
By the time I'm in the market for a replacement, the upcoming model will be old hat – and I bet it doesn't depart the scene as half the classic that the current Macbook Pro is.
I'd say get your Macbook Pro pronto. Would you REALLY prefer a Macbook Air-looking bit of flimsy, even if it had all the specifications of the Macbook Pro? I prefer a genuine classic to use for the next three or four years anyday!

Sorry about my bad english. It's pretty late where I am. :)

What I meant is, I'm at a camp, so I won't be able to buy a laptop during the camp. Camp is 4 weeks, all July. I need a laptop for that camp. I want to buy it before I go there, but I don't want to buy the last laptop before the refresh also. So guess all I have to hope for now is to have Apple release it before July. Even if they don't I won't buy one till I get back, however. I really want to hold out. I do have a 3 yr old HP laptop I can use with a reinstall of windows...

i WAS under the impression, that Apple would add that new translucent keyboard that doubled as a touch screen!
no? with all the new touch patients and rumors, and now this REDESIGN... how could they not add it?

No, because there is just a little work (a LOT) to be done in the OS before they implement that. It won't come until OS X 10.6 1-2 years from now. Right now they are easing into it with the bigger multi-touch trackpads.

Hmmm, all these mockups makes me want to bust out Lightwave and make an entirely new model from scratch. Some of these "mockups" are just someone using the paint bucket to color the screen border black and the healing brush to remove the latch button and IR receiver. I just wish I had more time to make something cool. I probably will eventually. For now, back to studying.

Oh, and there's this...

Jayhawks!! 2008 National Champs baby!

That side view of the new MBP is my personal favorit too.
Here's some more mockups:

Exactly Apple likes it's price points and will build the best machine they can to that margin and price points.

If anything you could see them slide the whole range down by $100
to start from $999 keeping the same gaps between models.

Dear Mr. Jobs -

This is the wish list of hardware features that should be on the new portables.

MBP: 1.) 16 inch & 18 inch screens 2.) DDR3 RAM 3.) Read/Write Blue Ray drive 4.) revised backlit keyboard [I'd prefer a darker blue or a dark orange, that stands out more, makes it easy on the eyes but also looks good] 5.) more multitouch features in the mouse pad.

MB: 1.) eliminate part of the inch boarder around the screen 2.) 13 inch & 15 inch LED displays 3.) BTO DDR3 RAM option 4.) BTO Blue Ray read, DVD RW drive 5.) light up keyboard 6.) multitouch mouse pad

I think increased reliability and serviceability goes without saying on both new models. I like the idea of applying some of the curvature of the iMac and TiBook to the new design. I also really like the silver and black approach, its classy, yet subtle. Finally, the BTO options on the macbook and the 15 inch display for under $2000 would make that model an instant hit on college campuses.

and another thing

This pisses me off to know end which is why I'm posting this. I really hope they come out with a macbook with a 15" screen. I hate those tiny 13.3" screens. Thats the only thing holding me back from getting a macbook. The guy above me said the same thing, but I can't remove this post

who's feeling a smaller macbook?

Anyone else get the feeling we may yet see either an 12 or 11" MacBook?

Almost like the Air is the smaller MBPro, a business portable. And a smaller MB will be like a student ultra portable.

Sure it will not be as thin as the air - but will probably have a smaller footprint.

why now?

I just purchased a mac book pro just to hear now that they are finally relaunch the surface design? I am a little pissed. On the other hand, the only thing I miss on the current MBP is a larger [RETURN]-Key and maybe a seperate [DEL]-Key.
