Is it advisable to wait until all the problems have been discovered, and ironed out? If so, how long would you wait after release to get one? I know some people aim for the first revision of a new design.

Just off the top of my head....
I can think of 3 big products Apple released in the last 3 months that have had problems initially: Mac Pro, Time Capsule, and MacBook Air.
So, a logical deduction can be made that it is best to wait a bit before you buy. That is, of course, if you aren't in a rush to buy.

Do you know how long after their release (if at all) the major problems have been sorted out for the new batches of these products being sold?

Yeah! I cant wait to buy a new-style MB in July. Looks like Apple will be getting a lot of my money then (iPhone 3G and new MB).

I'm hoping that the MB will look like it does now, just maybe a bit thinner and lighter. The screen size is good, I dont have any gripes really. A 2.26 or 2.4Ghz MB with 2GB of RAM and leopard sounds good to me!

The best part is that Montevina is supposed to enable lower CPU power usage (25W instead of 35W) so we could even see some battery life gains out of this revision as well (or possibly a smaller battery). Current MBs get 4-5 hours now, I'd love to see them get 5+ hours. My current ancient MB gets 2 hours if I'm lucky.

Agreed, look at this past upgrade - the MBs and MBPs got updated at the same time. That was totally uncharacteristic for Apple to do, usually its MBPs in January/July and MBs in May/November. So I wouldnt be surprised to see MBPs and MBs launch in June or July.

If I remember correctly, the last time the MB and MBP were updated together, the MBP was updated a 2 or 3 months later and the MB about 4 months after the MBP. So I expect the MBP to be updated in June and the MB in Sep/Oct., probably after the Back-to-School deals.

I, as well, was expecting something like this. In a previous thread I had someone make a mock-up to my specifications. I forget his/her name, but I'll try to search and find it to give them credit. I think it came out awesome:

+1. Love the look, but I am not so sure I would like the keyboard - looks like chiclet-style? I much prefer the current MBP keyboard feel to the MB.

I agree, and that isn't much of a serious redesign, more like a refinement, and as was said before, there are some design flaws in it. But then again, it's a mockup.

I just hope they refine it, otherwise, change the entire look and feel but keep it professional on the Pro end, give more useful features and make the thing run COOLER!

Try the MBA keyboard. In my opinion, it is the best keyboard that Apple have ever slapped on a portable.

Wow, that's an awesome mockup! I really like the mag latch and trackpad, and it will probably end up looking a lot like that. Although, no lies, I love the current MBP keyboard.

I'm eagerly awaiting the re-release of the Mac mini. Come on Penryn!!!

My guess is that the new designs will reflect the aesthetic character of the MacBook Air. I'm not saying that's what I'd like or prefer, but that's kind of what I am expecting.

Let's remember this is the same company which still insists on giving us a cosmetically one-button mouse, a one physical button touchpad, and a chicklet-style keyboard. C'mon, Steve, take the gloves off of Jonathon St. Ives already and let him make something more industrial with aesthetic refinements!

I would have to say that every situation is different. The Time Capsule and MacBook Air had their bugs fixed in a matter of weeks. The Mac Pro released in January only now seems to have been fixed by the recent firmware update.
It should be noted that not everyone had problems with these products. But there were a lot of cases on the forums.
So, just my advice here, unless you need to buy right away, wait for a few days (or even weeks) and get the pulse on the product from the Mac community. If there seems to be problems, you might see a benefit in waiting. Again, some people don't have problems (lucky) or they don't mind the problems. I buy Macs because they rarely have problems and I like the user experience. I won't buy a Mac product unless it's been tested and reviewed positively. For example, I'm still running Tiger. I don't have an immediate need for Leopard and am waiting for more bug fixes.
To each their own. This is just my opinion.

I believe that there will be design changes this summer for the macbook pro and the macbook.

My reasoning is that apple needs to recover the value of its stocks after they plummetted and what better way than to create a new design for their much desired laptops and combine it with their Ipod deal?

Slash the prices of iphones and the ipod touch and bam! consumers will be all over apple :D

There is talk that :apple: would reserve the laptop redesign for next year when Nehalem comes out. I don't buy it because if Jobs was even half the businessman I think he is, he would know that a redesign of the macbook and macbook pro this year would sell laptops like crazy and the release of Nehalem next year will make the people who bought laptops this year buy a new one next year too haha...

I totally agree with you.. :D

when will it be back

:apple:When do you think that this refurb deal will be available again because i need a new iphone?:apple:

Finally...I hate the MacBook design, this plastic looks so ugly, hope the new MacBooks will come out soon in Germany too

Good night guys, gonna go to bed now, lol ;)

yah, i hear there's gonna be this revolutionary update for the AIR. it's gonna change the whole world, the way we use AIR.

the single flip out usb port is to get MORE SPACE to make it usable!
wow!!! thank you god. ooo..h..no..thank you apple! *bows*

Alright, look... let's take a look at the laptop lineup they've got, from the standpoint of classification.

Apple has had a delineation in their product lines between "pro" and "consumer" ever since the mid 1990s with the introduction of the Centris and Performa models. Well, ok, the Performa was more properly a "consumer" line, but still both were somewhat lesser systems than the Quadra equivalents. This is one of the handful of business concepts Steve kept when he returned in 1997, and it's something which, in my opinion, we're all kind of stuck with. In fact, it's a bit hard for many of us probably to divorce ourselves from the concept because it's essentially ingrained into the Apple culture of which we are a part.

I don't know how much relevance it holds in the minds of the public today -- or that it ever has had any relevance in their minds -- and perhaps it's something Apple should do away with. I mean, when I talk to non-techie people out in the world, they invariably have no clue Apple differentiates their product line. At all. And in fact, especially with the introduction of the G5-based iMac line, and then the x86-based one, Apple has done such a damn good job of blurring the line that, not only are people out there unaware of it, but it's gotten pretty hard to see the line of demarkation anymore ourselves. Does anyone here really disagree with me on this point?

So, what is it that Apple needs a "pro" and "consumer" division for? What specific function does it perform that some other system -- or perhaps no other system at all -- wouldn't achieve? I mean, here's a Mac Pro [virtually points to one of Apple's towers] and it's the high-end unit. Here's an iMac [virtually pointing again] and it's the mid-range unit. Here's a MacBook Pro [holds up a metal laptop] and it's the high-end laptop. Here's a MacBook [drops the metal laptop on the floor, and grabs a white plastic one] and it's the lower-end one. And here [tossing the laptop to a near-by audience member and then picking up a Mac mini] is Apple's low-end budget system. [Stuffs it under his arm.] And this unit over here [uses his thumb to point in the direction of a MacBook Air], well... don't even get me started on that one.

See what I mean? High end -> low end. It's as simple as that. And if Apple does what we think they might (that is, generates a new amalgam in which the MacBooks and MacBook Pros resemble each other and the MacBook Air), then what we're visually left with is a very unified -- but very visually undifferentiated -- lineup of systems in which the terms "pro" and "consumer" will have very little value left to them.

I'm not personally a fan of a metal-cased laptop. I'm told it makes it easier to shed heat that way, but one of the most annoying things I know of is a laptop that's so damn hot it's uncomfortable to work on, let alone do something rather mundane like have it in your lap.

So, by all means (as far as I'm concerned) bring on more polycarbonate-cased Mac laptops.
