i hope the new mbp's case is made of carbon not aluminium.
alulimiun is already out and carbon is way lighter.
and black would be fantastic... i am bored of silver

So do I. But if Apple will stick to aluminum, anodized black MBP will look
better. And streamlined body like old powerbook is sure to open my wallet.
They were so great that I had both Lombard and Pismo...

This is just speculation, but Apple may be moving to a higher def screen and blu ray as an option on the pro line. I think batt life and cost still hold this back- but there are reports that Sony is being aggressive with some vendors to get blu ray in to heir lines. Macbook Pros need to be cutting edge for making video. The fact that hey can't burn a HD movie is putting them far behind.

I think a lot of people would be shocked if Blu Ray comes to the MacBook Pro before being an option on the Mac Pro...

The big problem I see with that is the possibility that Apple won't release a new model at WWDC. We all hope that they do, and lots of poster claim they will and give their opinions on why they think Apple will do it; but lots of times it hasn't happened.

The past three Apple events didn't yield any new machines, and everyone was waiting for updated Mac Pros, MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, and iMacs.

If you buy a few days before WWDC and expect a MBP update to come, or even a redesign (because it is just a rumor) then you may be disappointed, and find yourself waiting a little longer, or Apple may release them after your 14 days are up.

Good point. But I sort of need a new laptop relatively soon so if nothing comes out of WWDC ... I'm going to need and get one regardless. And when a new update and/or design comes out and after waiting for the first generation of those to be cleared of the bugs and typical kinks that come with a new design, it'll be a decent enough time to consider buying that update (if I even like it).

Maybe for the consumer machines, but for the Pros, keep the just about the same size, but at least give me more FW ports, the mag latch, and a cooler running machine.

I tried frying an egg on a 400mhz ti. It didn't work but it was so hot.... I love my mbp, but would love an extra fw port. My machine runs cool 90% of the time, but sweats a little when she is rendering and such. I like to think that is her way of showing me how hard she works. JK

Do ya carry the new Penryn model? I was very surprised that the 17" ran cooler than my Merom 15" even when working hard. And the battery lasts longer that I would have ever expected.... about four or more hours with the screen turned all the way up, bluetooth on, better performance, and running Aperture and Photoshop CS3.

If you are sitting on the fence this is a good time to buy. The new models are rumored to be ths and that, but the current ones ARE much improved over the last ones.

Absolutely pray for no chiclet keyboard.

You don't even know what a chiclet keyboard is.

Either way, the current aluminum desktop keyboard feels so much better than the older white ones IMO. And I harken back to the days of the AEK II keyboards.

Since I am not that picky about keyboards, I can't say I like one more than another (on the Apple side, the cheap Dell ones piss me off til this day), but the new ones aren't that bad. I appreciate the small size of them and the even smaller wireless one (for laptops anyway, they should have kept the num pad) but I do hope they don't put it in the new MBPs.

I know they will though, since Apple likes to save money, and I am sure they will save millions on buying one type of keyboard.

What I really hate of the current MBPs is the ugly speaker grills and that ugly plastic edge.

I can't stand the edge, and the speaker grill gets those perfect pieces of dust that sit in the holes so they are visible, but you can't get them out.... perfect.

I would love to get rid of the latching system. The last book I had was a dud with the latch and the new one is much better, but can we get some mag latch love?

I do wish the MacBook Pros (at least the 17") had a numeric keypad, since I use them a great deal.

And yes, magnetic lid latches would be very sweet.

Ok tried my hand at it.

What do you think of my little redesign?

Not bad, but I still don't think there will be a black bezel on the portables. Even on this design, the bezel is larger than the previous version and it isn't adding anything to the machine.

I thought that once and wondered why Apple didn't do it. Then I tried typing on a PC 17" laptop and the off-centered screen got on my nerves.

I'm glad I bought a blackbook while I can. Metal is so dumb. I hate the feeling of my wrist "sticking" to my hot macbook pro.

true that. got my whitebook a week and a half ago and lovin it. great time to buy one. i dont care bout the aluminum and this computer is fast enough already so front side bus speeds dont bother me that much. It will be faster and made of aluminum but i like the feel of the polycarbonate material. People worry bout the cracking alot but im not stickin that in my head.

I'm going to be a freshman in college this year and wanted to get a MacBook Pro. I was going to get it as soon as they started the free iPod deal (if they choose to do so again), but now its going to be really hard choice since Apple obviously doesn't like talking about their products before hand. So I was going to get it by the 2nd week of August (hopefully).

But when exactly is WWDC? Or when else could they announce this? And this isn't necessarily true yet right? But this is coming from a credible source...

WWDC starts on June 9th. Apple may announce a new release of the MBP at any time but rumor sites seem to think it will be sometime after June to coincide with Intel's latest processor, code-named Nehalem. Everything about the upcoming release of the MBP is based on both educated and wild guesses, some common sense, and every now and then, a "credible source".

But I wouldn't stress it. When you need to buy - going off to your first year of college even with the current MBP won't be a punitive experience.

Nehalem will not be introduced by Intel until late 2008, and the first processors will be for servers/workstations, so the Mac Pro is likely to see them first. The mobile version (which would fit in the MacBook/MacBook Pro, as well as the iMac and Mac Mini) will not be released until mid-2009.

What is likely coming this summer is Montevina. Montevina is not a processor, but a platform (systemboard). It will use the same Penryn CPUs as the current MacBooks/MacBook Pros use, but will bring some enhancements in memory speed (800MHz instead of 667MHz).

As to your question, CrossFireXT17, August will likely be a fine time to buy a MacBook Pro. By then Apple will have released new Al cases for the MacBook and MacBook Pro (if the rumor is true) and will likely have made the move to Montevina. I am buying my new one in late July, but that is because I want to take it to the San Diego Comic Con. :)

Opps.

The waiting is killing me! I was going to buy a MBP 2 weeks ago but i read about this apparent update so i didnt buy it. What is the consensus? Do we think June is realistic?

Well summer makes sense to release a re-design since by then Apple should be able to secure Montevina platform systemboards. They also might have enough information on the quad-core mobile Penryns due in late 2008 to ensure that the new enclosure would support them (assuming Apple intend to release a quad-core MacBook/MacBook Pro model).
