this tuesday might be crucial for Apple, since its earth day, its a tuesday, and we're coming closer to summer meaning an announcement might be made...

Yeah would make sense. one of the reasons for a redesign is so the materials are more ecofriendly. So why not announce it on earth day.:)

^^ that would be great, but I don't have a great feeling that will happen.
I could see it happening in June, but if they announced so early sales would fall dramatically for the current line. Apple doesn't usually pre-announce their products.

Also, say Apple releases the new form factor on Tuesday. Then, four to eight weeks later, they release the Montevina platform updates. A whole lot of people are going to be a whole lot of upset.

Apple is already under fire from the customer base for the iPhone price drop and the nVidia upgrade for the previous Mac Pro and Airport Extreme/Time Machine. I really doubt they want to honk-off a slew of folks who just dropped $1000-3000 on new laptops.

That may be true, but you can't always please everyone. I mean look at ipods there's updates twice a year now it seems like. The same thing is gonna happen with the iphone when they have 3G.:)

May be true with the iphone, but I do not think they will update the notebooks until this summer, when the montevina chips come out, and then again when nehalem comes out, probably introduced at MWSF '09. I think they will definitely wait until the processor update to introduce the new form factor.

Well than that sucks, but is it really bad to buy a MBP right now because i want one so bad.:)

Amazon $150 Rebate

I was going to buy a MBP by tomorrow purely because amazon's $150 rebate ends then. I don't necessarily need one ASAP -- my iMac is barely chugging along, but I can wait another month, especially if a new update is expected. The main reason I was going to buy before tomorrow was to save $150. Does anybody have experience with amazon rebates, e.g. whether they'll extend it as they have in the past? Ideally I'd wait a bit longer....

Thanks!

Apple seems more then happy to release a hardware update after an operating system update.

Well they are getting close to releasing 10.5.3, which will likely include driver updates for the Montevina platform, so once 10.5.3 ships, that is when I'd start the "watch clock" for new hardware.

Ah, understood.

I would think 10.6 might ship with Nehalem, and this could be an explanation for the rumors that PowerPC support would leave with 10.6?

We haven't even had 10.5 for a year and Q1/Q2 2009 for 10.6?

I agree that 10.6 will leave out G4 and probably G5 support, but I don't know if it would come that soon. I would like to see 10.5 as stable and solid as 10.4.9/10 was before they push out another, feature rich OS.

If you need/want it badly, get it, there is always something better a few months down the road. They may not even announce/ship the new product till august or later.

Eh, I don't need one until September so I'll hold off, just in case there are any refreshes/updates.

Nehalem is still based on the Core microarchitecture, so Apple should not need to do any serious tweaking of the OS, so you are both correct that a 10.5.x update should be plenty to handle the move to it and a full point update is not necessary.

My wish for Apple laptops continues to be that they make them more functional and practical. How about a full keyboard? What about maybe having a numeric keypad built in? I still think Apple should put to freakin' buttons on the touchpad, and a media reader. I mean, as much as they tout their systems as being advanced, cutting edge, and oriented towards convergence integration, you'd think they could put a multi-standard media reader on the side of the machine opposite where the optical drive is.

Geez...

Hope they will remove the CD-ROM from MacBook pro and reduce its weight and size further. CD-ROM is like the floppy earlier, and I use it less and less :)

DVD-Rom/DVD-RW is a needo. Hope they put more into the new macbooks. They've made an option to non-optical drive users. Macbook Air. I use DVD a lot(well not that much cd though). So, aluminum would be gr8 but don't put your optical drivers away please apple.:apple:

I think it all depends whether your MBP is your only computer ... if you have a desktop, I agree that the optical drive could be superfluous. But I think this should be an option, not the default. Probably a majority of people use a MBP as their only computer.

No kidding. I'll see your ideas... and raise you a couple USB ports. ;)

I like only having one computer, and not having to keep both of them sync'd. I'd also be willing to forego the optical drive in favour of a smaller form factor and weight savings, and for the limited use of the optical drive have a plug'n play USB drive like the MBA. Just my two cents.

I guess that takes me back to what a lot of people here say - would like to have something somewhere between the size of the MBA and the MB with the performance of the MPB.

The 12" MBP (nee PowerBook) resurrected along with the mythical mid range tower.

yes

i wish they would have made something similar to the 12" iBook/Powerbook. I still have my iBook G4 (1.33,1.25ram,100 7200rpm,leopard) that i grab whenever i want something that is portable but it just lacks so much in the speed department esp coming from my MBP. I was really dissapointed when i saw the Air with its 13" footprint. Ok, so its thin, but it is the same size as a MacBook if you are in a tight spot i.e. plane, train, auto. As far as the optical drive goes, if it would be replaced with a BluRay drive i would be in favor of that move, as I rip alott of cd/dvd's with my mac. I would hate to have to carry around an external drive for those moments where I needed/wanted to use my drive. I definately agree that that type of media is on its way out, but it is just like vhs and casettes back in the day, it is going to take awhile to phase out. Just my 2cents. :D

Are we going to have to wait until WWDC to know if we are getting a new MBP or might he hear more accurate details sooner?
How does it usually work?
