Anybody know the answer to this? I've been with Apple for a long, long time now. Anyways, I never changed my original Apple ID. It's just a username without an actual email address. Anyways, they've requested I change it, but I don't want to. The main problem lies in that I do have a second Apple ID that Apple created which is the same as the one without the email address but includes @icloud.com/@me.com. So one Apple ID is "Example" and another is "Example@icloud.com." All of my iTunes purchases and whatnot are on the non-email address based Apple ID. I guess if they made a way to combine Apple IDs, I'd consider it. I just don't want to lose my non-email address based Apple ID.

"You can change your Apple ID to any other email address* you control, as long as it's not already in use as an Apple ID." i.e. you can't merge existing Apple IDs for those of you wishing to do so and who might be confusing matters.
Thanks. That's why I'm getting an error. Sucks as it seems most of us here were hoping this meant we can finally combine IDs.

Could be related to the 1st step of the Apple support doc, signing off from all Apple services and devices? At this point am not sure I want to do this..
I read that too... that means signing out of my all of my associated devices except my iPhone. It should not be that much of a nuisance to change an AppleID.
o_O:confused::eek::(

Not working at all for me.

I have waited for this since 2011 when Apple email address became free with iCloud. I signed up for iOS beta to get my pick. I have been wanting to drop my other email for years.

I think that is the intended effect. From the support doc..

When you change your Apple ID, you can enter another third-party email address or an @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com email address.

If it was just about setting up a new @icloud.com address there wouldn't be a need to list the @me.com or @mac.com address options. Hopefully this is just a case of the ability to do the change rolling out to all of our accounts in intervals, as I can't swap mine over yet either. The publish date on that support doc is today.

Gah I've been wanting to do this for years, my apple id is an old hotmail address I haven't had access to in 8 years. It still won't let me change it to my iCloud address :/

Can you or anyone describe to me the benefits of using iCloud Mail vs Gmail? I know alot of people say privacy. However, I just am not seeing a great reason. Thanks.
Preference. I hate how googles UI is on the web, looks like a 2year old designed it.

I just wish that Apple mail would allow you to send from different email addresses, like Gmail. Then I would actually use it.

Good point. Will try again another time.

For anyone who got this to work, did you have to sign out from both iCloud accounts to get this to work? Or just the one with the 3rd party address?

I'm slightly confused about what this means. While my "official" Apple ID was set up as name@whatever.com, I sign in with my @mac.com email all the time. In fact, I'm pretty sured I'm signed in to all my devices like that.

So, what is the point of this? Recovery purposes?

Yeah not working for me.. won’t even let me delete my contactable at address and says that it cannot end in an Apple domain when I try and change it.. this is a feature I have requested for a long time. Hopefully it rolls out to everyone soon!

I didn't sign out of anything. I just went to iCloud.com on my computer and changed it under account settings

I just want to be able to merge my accounts... I have an account iamcool ( not my real account) and iamcool@mac.com that used to be the same account (the email address for iamcool was always iamcool@mac.com) but at some point many years ago they diverged and I didn’t realize it. So some purchases are under the one and some under the other.
It seems to me all of my purchases merged? After transferring over to my iCloud.com account, I went on my phones app store, looked under purchases, and all of my purchases (previously through my Gmail account) were there.

Aw shizz... are you telling me that I can’t merge my @me email address and my third party Apple ID for stores because I ACCIDENTALLY USED MY @me EMAIL TO PURCHASE AN APP AND TURNED IT INTO A FULL FLEDGE APPLE ID STORE APP AND NOW I CANT MERGE THEM TOGETHER BECAUSE YOU CANT MERGE PURCHASES?! NOO
