Like others, I have two account, one I used years ago for purchases, and one I created more recently.

The third party email is signed into the Apple App Store, but everything else is signed into the iCloud account.

It is not clear to me if I can simply switch the third party one to the already established iCloud one (basically transferring the purchases to that app) or not. The note above sounds like still no as i would like to switch to an already established account, vs a second iCloud account, but I am not 100% sure.

Anybody know the answer to this? I've been with Apple for a long, long time now. Anyways, I never changed my original Apple ID. It's just a username without an actual email address. Anyways, they've requested I change it, but I don't want to. The main problem lies in that I do have a second Apple ID that Apple created which is the same as the one without the email address but includes @icloud.com/@me.com. So one Apple ID is "Example" and another is "Example@icloud.com." All of my iTunes purchases and whatnot are on the non-email address based Apple ID. I guess if they made a way to combine Apple IDs, I'd consider it. I just don't want to lose my non-email address based Apple ID.

i can't remember exactly how it happened but they allowed the apple ID to become an email Apple ID I think with the launch of Dot Mac. Then there was a while you could log in with either of them. I'm not sure how you managed to create a different account, are you absolutely sure they are different?

I originally used my @Mac account but apple killed if that email address and had to create a 3rd party address as a backup.
Are they reactivating @mac.com ? I don't think so. Someday iCloud will be phased out and email accounts canceled for new ones like steve@ios.com

I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking, but @mac.com email addresses absolutely still work. That’s what I use to log into iCloud, and it’s the email address I send email from through iCloud

I've had problems with Apple Mail since my first Apple device, a 2008 Apple iMac. I still have the account, but I can seldom use it, my apple email frequently won't send and sometimes won't receive. It's like that right now. I can receive emails sent to my account but if I try to reply I get a 'cannot send using this account' errors. I've called support and gotten the problems fixed (pop addresses, imap settings) multiple times but the fix usually only lasts a few days. I don't know anyone else who has the problem I have but I've had it for 9 years, or more truthfully, I haven't really used my Apple mail account for that long. I have no trouble setting up any other account, and those emails don't suddenly quit working. After the last time it quit working, about 15 months ago, I haven't bothered going back into settings to see what is or isn't there.

So my AppleID can stay with a non-Apple mail account. If something goes wrong I'll actually get the email.

I’m also here wondering if I can now merge two accounts? I have an @me.com account that I use for iCloud and home sharing. I use my gmail account for purchases. Are they saying I can now combine the two accounts?

no i think this is about creating a new one. Basically converting a non-icloud-email account to one that does have email by picking a new address. For people that already have a seperate icloud-email and are trying to merge anther apple id into it this probably won't help them.

I updated my @gmail.com AppleID about 30 mins ago.

For clarity, I changed it to the iCloud email that was already associated (as an alias) with the @gmail address.

I, too, have an old @mac.com AppleID that I would love to merge with the 2nd iCloud account but was unable to do so.

Cool. I was able to change mine over, but will this affect my music library that was associated with old gmail?
I still occasionally have that problem if I pull out an old hard drive with iTunes on it from way back. I originally had a linked AOL account as my Apple account and occasionally I’ll find an old file still keyed to that ID trying to authenticate.

I agree. Would we have a similar problem of our currently downloaded and authorized media having a unlinked account?

I believe it’s come up before but Apple sunset the .mac accounts. You could keep them in use, but if you ever remove them they’re gone for good.

Is the @me.com or @icloud.com email address you're trying to use as your Apple ID already listed in the "REACHABLE AT" section? If not, try adding it there using the "Add More..." link and then once its listed there attempt to change your Apple ID using the "Change Email Address..." link.
My iCloud email is already listed under “Reachable” as my primary email address. It still won’t let me use it as my AppleID.

Okay, Apple. Now how about letting those of us with third-party email addresses as our Apple ID actually send mail from that third-party address without having to trick our mail client into thinking we’re not using our iCloud account?

My @mac.com address has @me and @icloud aliases for it already.

I had the @mac.com for iChat but mistakenly created a new iCloud when I bought my first iPhone 3G and made many purchases with it. Not worth ditching the purchases to use the old account.

I’m assuming this will not work to merge with an existing Apple ID ending with iCloud.com, me.com or Mac.com. Can someone confirm either way?

Not sure I get this. I’ve been using an Apple ID with an iCloud/me ending for years now. What am I missing?

You cannot merge accounts. Apple will not allow it. So if that’s the hope from some, sorry to dash those.

If you created a new iCloud account from an iDevice you had the option of just taking the Apple email.

Setting it up on Apple.com had you create an account using a 3rd party email. From the 3rd party email AppleID, if you enabled the mail setting in iCloud it would prompt you to create an @icloud alias account of your choosing.

The change allows people to replace the @3rdparty email with the alias that @icloud/@me/@Mac that existed already on that AppleID.

Previously an iCloud alias could not be chosen as a replacement when updating your 3rd party AppleID email.

Thanks for that’s clarification. Must have been what I did.

Still cannot change the primary Apple ID.

Good luck with that. I already tried. All attempts failed. Said could not use those domain names.

So I'm thinking this story is false or you need to be PAYING Apple for this perk. As in like paying for iCloud space.

Have you ever seen Apple do anything for FREE?
