" According to Apple, the power adapter and EarPods were removed from the ‌iPhone‌ boxes to reduce the company's environmental impact, "

Impact is impact. It doesn't matter if Apple included it or not due to environmental impact...the fact that I now need to acquire a new one, that comes in a box full of paper and plastic and is manufactured somewhere on this planet is STILL IMPACT.

Honestly, I wouldn't pay for one if I opted to buy a new iPhone...I would make them give me one for free. Seriously, this is ridiculous.

Less impact is better than full impact. If they don’t put one in each box, that’s potentially millions that won’t get thrown away or shoved in a closet somewhere. I have used the same 3rd party charger for 3 years now... which means my last 3 phones I didn’t use the power block OR the cable. I welcome this change.

Really?? Not a single iPhone came with USB-C. What makes Apple think that customers would have a USB-C Power Adapter?? If I'm only an iPhone user... then I would have never had a device that would include a USB-C Power Adapater
My point was exactly this... I dont understand who has USB-C adapters laying around in this day and age... only see USB type adapters... its obviously a plot to charge more... If they are selling it separately, its still the same exact impact, this is just a crazy move... like earpods maybe, but people cant even charge there phone ? or sync to basically nowhere with USB-C cable, unless its a newer MAC... or buy an older style cable... Im astonished at what they are doing... a

All of the new iPhone 12 models and older iPhone models ship only with a USB-C to Lightning cable, with customers expected to provide their own power adapters. Most people likely have several USB-C power adapters on hand from past device purchases, but this will be an inconvenience for those who have few power adapters available already.

Apple's selling price for the new 20W USB-C power adapter is cheaper than the older 18W USB-C model that used to be available for $29.

For clarity (and honesty), I feel like there should be a disclaimer when articles say "most people already have adapters" because most people, I assure you, don't have the 20W or above variants. They most likely have the older 3-5W adapters, which will take a lot longer to charge the newer phones or to take advantage of the quick charging feature.

Apple even markets the iPhone 12 models as being able to be charged 50% in 30 minutes, if you're using a 20W adapter. And they make sure to put a little * after it.

20W is a weird number, I wonder what the specs are. Usually chargers are 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, etc @ 2-3 A so coming up with 20W is bit odd. Maybe 9V @ 2.2 A?

It probably is meant to better conform to the USB-C Power Delivery standards. Apple updated the 29W and then went to a 30W adapter for the same reasons.

Does this charge faster than the 18w one or is the iPhone locked at 18w fast charging

Fast charging. I have a million of them lying around, including the charger in my car.

its kinda hilarious, the whirling rumor for years was Apple will one day finally ship an iPhone with a fast charger to... no charger at all included in the box. We leapt right past expectations

I thought nobody needed this? With billions of chargers out there? Hmmm

Pretty much anyone who has been in Apple's ecosystem for more than the last year has a USB-A to Lightning cable and adapter already which is why Apple moved to USB-C chargers and USB-C to Lightning cables in the iPhone 11 since that was rarer (and USB-C supported faster charging). So anyone who had an iPhone 11 should have the charger and not need a new one for the iPhone 12.

I have mostly switched to USB-C adapters and cables for all my equipment.

The iPhone 11 Pro came with a USB-C adapter.

Makes sense, though I already have several type-c adaptors from my other USB-C devices. I think the only legacy USB charge cable I have is on the PS4.

The USB-A one didn't fold either.

UK had folding USB-A. The 18W USB-C with the iPhone 11 Pro was folding, and this new 20W adapter is also folding. It's so nice, and worth the extra over cheaper brands like Anker as British plugs can do some nasty damage floating around inside your pack.

So the irony is - your USB A chargers are plentiful and Apple doesn't see a need to include one in the box, but we'll obsolete them by shipping you a cable that requires a USB C charger.

I'm OK if they do that, but don't say it's to save the environment. The environment will soon swallow those 2 billion, now obsolete, USB A chargers.
